PARKER, JAIXIES EDWARD RAWLINCS, JOE SHORT, BILLY STONEINIAN, PAUL ODELL TUCK, WILLIAM ANDREW TYLER, HERMAN KENNON WANT, LAVIS WIKSTROM, RICHARD MELVIN Page Twenty-seven Class History THE TALE WE SENIORS TELL It was in September of the year ONE NINE FOUR TWO that we scrambled out of packed buses and crowded street cars and entered our freshman year at Hampton High School. Our first days found us wandering through the school's labyrinth halls. hunt- ing for classes bending under weight of our history, science and comic books. It didn't take us long to learn the ropes and we were soon leading a normal freshman life-taking our places at the end of the lunch line and snitching chairs from other tables. Two outstanding things of our rat year have printed themselves idelibly on our minds. Hamptonis victorious hardfighting Crabbers,' were rewarded with the Class A State Championship and our foe the Blue and Goldi' was forced to bite the dust of defeat. My, but we were proud of this. Eagerly we awaited the Christmas holidays which approached with snail like speed and departed much more quickly. We struggled through our first exams and learned the definition of cramming. Iune showed up soon after and to the tune of No more lessons, no more books , we cleared out our desks and left for summer vacation--much to the relief of our teachers. September, '43 found us back again at H. H. S. tanned and raring to gobble up knowledge. It was comical--the serious business-like way in which we set out to persecute the freshmen--we, who the year before had worn the same red brand on our bewildered foreheads. One's Sophomore year is usually the most uneventful one. Some of us broke the monotony by taking a day vacation-- Hockey they call it. After- ward we found it was safer to stay in school. D Practically nothing occurred during the winter, basketball games helped to cheer us, and we found that a little work doesn't go so bad once in a while. But in the springtime, ah! that's another tale. With great effort and much perspiration we got through exams, happy at the thought of only two more years to go--we hoped. On returning to school, we found that several things had changed, for instance, our increased number. We became acquainted with many new class- mates from Phoebus and George Wythe. We also began to feel the grim effects of rationing, as we battled for Hershey bars in the cafeteria. Luckily there were no serious casualties. The time soon came to elect junior officers, and we assembled in the auditorium where our class became organized, with Billy Boyer as president, Paul Garber as vice-president, jackie Pettitt as secretary, and Beverly Gunn as treasurer. School activities kept us pretty busy right up until Iune--pep rallies, foot- ball games, meetings, spring fever, and plans for the Junior-Senior prom. Be- fore we knew it, exams were over and we were free for three glorious months of vacation and boy! did we need them. Page Twenty-eight 1945! The year of years has finally wended its way into our midst and we find ourselves high and mighty Seniors, upon the threshold of graduation. How eagerly we settled down to work to make those last important credits. We had eventful football season and everyone was thrilled by the new stadium lights which permitted us to have night games. It soon became time to cast our votes for officers and we chose as president, Billy Boyer, whose popularity and capability demanded a second term. jo Ann Brittingham, vice-president, jean Davis, secretary and Christine Vaughan trea- surer, completed the ballot. Our studies were cut short by those wonderful Christmas holidays, however, we were soon back and trembling as the D.'s,'--fExam Daysj approached. Proud was the person who could yell YVhee! I passed , after they were all over. The weeks following held much excitement, caps and gowns were fitted, announcements ordered, practice for the play, the junior-Senior Prom, and last of all, the day of graduation. n Now, for perhaps the last time, the doors of Hampton High School close alter us and we realize that behind us we are leaving the happiest days of our lives, days well spent and long to be remembered in the hearts of the Class of '46. Fred Luke Executor Pendleton Thomas Bay Dean Brock Witnesses Page Thirty-one Class Prophecy During my several trips around the world, I have met many old friends with whom I attended Hampton High School. I left New York harbor May 5th aboard the S. S. Herbert Preston johnson, Ir., one of the larger ships owned by the DeGutis and Steen Guaranteed Not to Sink Steamship Linen, and who should be cashier in the ship's cafeteria but Bill Carter. Also working in the cafeteria was Elizabeth Haga, presiding over the potatoes, and Barbara Rose pouring the soup. I went up the top deck to get some sun and there were Betty johnson and Pat Simpson practicing their shuffleboard. They were going to Europe to take part in the shuffleboard contest in the Olympic games. They seemed to play it a little differently than everyone else, though they used their feet instead of the shuffleboard poles. Also going to the Olympic games were Pen Thomas and ,Iohn Dute, the greatest wrestlers of our time. After an uneventful trip across, we docked in Liverpool, England. The dock was a hive of activity, porters and stevedores were all over the place. I knew some of the faces seemed familiar. I saw Fred Luke, now head of the Stevedores Union. Some of his best workers were james Philapy, Bobby Oliver, Dewitt Griffin, and Bobby Quinn. On the dock taking pictures of the landing was Spencer Cardwell, now photographer for the New York Times. I was glad to see that Spencer got somewhere with his camera besides the Charles Taylor Library. I left England for France. I was on the train to Paris and who should be taking up tickets but Floyd Mabry. He told me that Tommy Richardson had worked his way up from porter to engineer on the same train. My, what ambition! Upon arriving in Paris, I went to a hotel managed by Eddie Morris. He employed a large staff of bellboys including Paul Logan, Bobby Baber, Robert Walton, Eugene Belcher and Eugene Brockley. After checking in, I went out to see some sights. I happened to walk into a theater, open for rehearsals, and there was Herbert Perkins teaching ballet. Some of his more outstanding students were Lobelia Barrett, Betty jean Coleman, Doris Darden, Elinor Duffey and Ann Elliott. After leaving the theater, I stopped in at one of the better night clubs where Ray Brock was sending the French gals with his rendition of Stardust . Over there, he is known as The Tonsilsf' Ray is managed by Spook Ford, who also writes most of his music. Taking leave of France, I went south to Italy. I was eating my lunch in one of those little outdoor cafes when I got an olive so tough I could hardly cut it with my knife. I went to complain to the manager, whom I found to be Richard Kostyal. He told me he iust managed the cafe for Mallory james. Ile said Mallory also employed Hazel Blackwell, Laurel Brown, Ann Burton and Ann Marie Cannon as waitresses, and Gene Carpenter, and Roy Magin as cooks. I left the cafe and was walking down the street when someone tapped me on the back and asked me to buy a raffle for a 1940 Varga girl calendar. It was Sidney Riggins. I bought one, knowing I wouldnit Win. That night, I went to eat my dinner at one of those nice little supper clubs featuring a sister act by Hat and Anne Bloxom. They were accompanied on the piano by Noel Truscott. It was very good. ' Later I left Italy for Russia. While walking down one of the side streets of Moscow, I came upon Sybil Hillman teaching the game of marbles to under- privileged children. She raised the cutest cocker spaniels on the side. Leaving Sybil, I went to one of the large city parks where I met Bubba Barham and Earl Barrett. Their iob was to keep all the park statues bright and shiny. Leaving Moscow, I continued Northwest across Siberia to China. About half way to Page Thirty-two China, I passed a little hot-dog stand run by jo jo Clark and Hardy Cash. They also sold ice-cream. Having reached China, I went directly to Nanking. I decided to take my laundry to one of those fine Chinese laundries. WVhen I got there, I found that it was owned by Stuart Irwin. He employed Billy Ezell and Paul Garber to put laundry marks on garments and Ernestine Clarke, june F olkes and Winifred Gardner to do all the heavy work. After leaving the laundry, I went on down the street past a shoe shine stand owned and operated by Billy Boyer and Billy Dewhirst. My, what V. P. I. did for them! Being hungry, I stopped at jean Woodward's Chinese restaurant. I Went in and sat down, and at the table next to mine was jimmy Gilman and Ernest Stoneman. They told me they were in China doing scientific research on the japanese beetle. They had a very nice little orchestra at the restaurant. Ralph Hudson played the clarinet, George Tyree the drums, Calvin Saunders a harp and joe Sealey kept time with his feet. After I got my laundry, I left China for japan. When I landed in japan, I looked around for a rickshaw. I found that james Hendrey owned a ricksaw service, anywhere in the city for twenty-five cents and an old Tootsie Roll Wrapperu. He was saving the wrappers to get a scooter. He had the very best coolies in japan, Milton Hodge, Robert Key, Harwood Robins, Donald Richardson, Randall Mason, and Charles Eichelberger. I hired a rick-shaw and went to the country. As I passed Mt. F uiiyama, I saw jo Ann Brittingham sitting at her easel painting the volcano. Very good, too. I did not stay long in japan as I was eager to visit some of the South Sea Islands. The first island I came to was Buna Goona Island where the natives were very uncivilized. Here I met jack Slavnick doing missionary work among the natives. He was always such a nice quiet sort of person. Earl Morris and Meredith jones were also pn that island selling hula skirts to the natives. I visited some other islands, then headed for the large continent of South America. My boat docked in Santiago, Chili. Here I learned that Hilda Edwards, jean Monroe and Alice Grant were doing very nicely with their Animal Cracker Factory. Frances Speer, jane C. Smith, Carol Christian and jean Davis were employed at the factory to cut out the animals. While in Chili, I visited one of the largest modern post offices where I saw pictures of many of my old Hampton friends, Buddy Rosser, Leroy Hastings, Henry Moore, and Charles Elliott. I always knew they would win world-wide acclaim. I continued my trip across the continent. When I reached Argentina, I ran into one of our Good Will tours. Here I met Lover-Boy McCaffrey. He was very successful in winning the good will of the South American senoritas. Teddy Davis, Lillian Reid, Doris Rudd and Charlotte Newell were there, too, doing their bit for the good-neighbor policy. The whole thing was managed by Mary-Ellen Ivory and Betty Ferguson. just before I left Buenos Aires, I ran into Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Taylor. They were on their honeymoon. Mrs. Taylor was the former Miss johanna Williams of Hampton. Being unable to secure passage to Africa, I decided I had better go back to the States. I went home feeling very satisfied at seeing so many Hampton High Graduates happy at their life work. The staff has provided the school with a group of trained operators for the motion picture equipment, for visual aids of other types, and for amplifying equipment used in connection with its program. Meetings were scheduled for the Audiographic Staff twice each week during most of the school year in order that the members might participate in a tomm Ou visual aid problems. YVithin these periods they learned to operate and care for the school's light projecting and sound amplifying equipmcntg thus assuring its satisfactory operation. In the past year, members of the Audiographic Staff have made improvements tO the sound system in the auditorium and in this way have made its control more satisfactory. They also proxided sound for activities in Darling Memorial Stadium for football games and for other special events. Through the new state visual aids program, motion picture equipment has been made available to the schools in the state, and members of the Audiographic Staff have aided greatly in distributing this equipment to the schools in Elizabeth City County. They have also aided in maintenance and repairs in the newly established central film library at Hampton lligh School Page F arty-seven x All-I.-UN S'i'1NN1':1f-11111: AI. The spark-plug of the Crabber's backfield, Joe Mark, on two different occasions threw long diagonal passes into the clutching hands of left end, Bobby Carroll, who was able to cross the goal line untouched. Several times the backfield combination of Mark, Tignor, Wingfield, and Baber were able to plunge through the line for a score. The most thrilling play of the game came with the kick-off of the second half when Mark received the ball on his own ten yeard line and twisting and tuming, ran ninety yards for a touchdown. Twice Charlie Wingfield split the uprights for the extra points. MAURY On the dedication night of the Darling Memorial Park Lighting System, the Crabbers defeated the Maury Commodores 18-6 in the first conference game of the season. The first touchdown of the game was made in the second period when the Crabber's backfield combination of Johnny Thomas, Joe Mark, Burleigh Harwood and Hunter Tignor rolled down the field, in a drive paced by beautiful teamwork, to the four yard line, where Mark smashed over for the counter. The second touchdown was made by a twenty-seven yard pass from Mark to Thomas. The Crabber's last touchdown was made by a pass from Mark to Rosser. The Commodore's lone tally came in the fourth quarter when Hudgins, Policos, and Forrest led a seventy-eight yard march to the Crabber goal line. BENEDICTINE In the third night game of their season, the Hampton Crabbers trounced the fighting Benedictine of Richmond 20-0. Led by their ace co-captain, Joe Mark, who scored all three of the touchdowns, the Crabbers reeled off their third victory of the season. Charlie Wingfield, another Crabber star, kicked two out of the possible three placements, and as a broken-field runner picked up many yards. The outstanding Benedictine Preppers were Butler and Wolfe. THOMAS JEFFERSON The biggest upset of the season came when the fighting Crabbers bowed to the strong T-J of Richmond by a score of 7-6. Both teams were unable to score in the first period, but the second period opened with the Crabberis half-back, Winston Baber, receiving a short pass from Mark and twisting and tuming ran twelve yards for a touchdown. The attempt for the extra point failed. The most thrilling run of the game came in third period, when Don Howven co-captain and half-back of the Jeffs received a Crabber punt on his own 18 and scampered 82 yards through the entire Hampton team to a touchdown. The try for the extra point was successful which gave the Ieffs a one point lead which they had to fight like mad to hold. DeGutis and Baber were the outstanding players for the Crabber Team. Page Sixty-nine DANVILLE ' Led by the co-captain, joe Mark, the Hampton High Crabbers defeated the Danville team 16-0. The Crabbers picked up a two point lead with a safety in the second quarter which they fought to keep in the next three quarters. Then, the bomb exploded, with joe Mark twice crossing the goal line for scores. Charlie Wingfield twice split the uprights for the two extra points. Outstanding for the visitors were Bradner, and Traynham, while the whole Crabber Team played a bang-up game. GRANBY In a game filled with all the football thrills, long touchdown runs, and pass interceptions for scores, the unbeaten Granby team defeated the Crabbers 41-13. The Blue Comets scored twice in the first, once in the second, twice in the third, and once in the fourth quarter, while the Crabbers scored twice. Touchdowns were made by Barnes, Gill and Ritter, and for Hampton: Carroll and Thomas. Granby was able to score five out of six extra points to Hampton's one out of two. WILSON Scoring in the first, second and fourth periods, the Wilson eleven led by Borum, Mounie, and Farris, defeated the Crabbers 20-0 in a hard fought game. johnny Thomas, substituting for Joe Mark, who was injured, tossed several excellent passes to Carroll, Rosser and Baber. The winning touchdowns were made by Fleming, Mounie and Borum. NORVIEW After a losing streak, the Crabbers led by their half-back, Winston Baber, over-powered the class B team of Norfolk 32-6. Baberis excellent broken-field running accounted for four of the Crabber's touchdowns. The first team, having proved too much for the op- ponents, caused the second team to enter the game. Both teams, then equally matched, tallied a touchdown each, with Cameal scoring for the Crabbers and Dews making the placement. Otustanding for the Crabbers were Baber, Bent, Kostyal and Cameal. GLASS LYNCHBURC Ending the season with the triumphant victory, the Crabbers trounced Glass High of Lynchburg, 39-6. The Hilltoppers opened the game with an eighty-five yard march to the goal, led by Meriwether and Almond. The try for the extra point was blocked. Then came the storm, Hampton's Baber, Harwood and Thomas reeled down to the goal where Thomas bucked over for the touchdown. Again Thomas dropped back and threw Bobby Carroll a pass which counted for the second score which ended the half. Opening the second half, captain jack Hill, intercepted a Glass pass which gave Hampton the ball again. Thomas dropped back and threw Carroll another touchdown aided by Baber and Harwood. In the last quarter the second team came in and a pass from Kostyal to Cameal completed the last tally. Wingfield's educated toe made three conversions. Outstanding for the Crabbers were Vincent DeGutis, jack Hill and Fred Luke. Page Seventy 1 , Q I 2 N, I f ,-ff ' I f' I' 4,24-,qc-L.
