THE TWENTIETH VOLUME OF TH€ HRflBBR • THE ANNUAL PUBLICATION • of the STUDENTS of HAITlPTOn HIGH SCHOOL Hampton, Virsinia Page One Page Two 1342 FOR6UUORD Whenever in the future, we stop to reminisce on the years gone by, many memories will come to mind. Memories of our going out into a world that cared little of what our ambitions might have been, but only of what we could do to overcome the obstacles that menaced our nation. Many of us will be called into the armed service; others into the various defense «• services; and some to continue our education. It is hoped that this year’s Krabba, printed during the time of a greatly changing world, will be a remem- brance of this eventful year in high school. - ac e ine. jfoneA an edkation In appreciation for her years of helpful advice and leadership, the staff respectfully dedicates the 1942 Krabba Page Four H. As a class, we began to exist on the fifth day of September, nineteen hundred and thirty-eight. We felt as if we had a very steep ladder to climb before the top was reached, for the upper classmen discouraged us very much. Scarcely had school been in session three weeks when we first took our [daces among the cheering squad. Following a successful football season we turned our athletic interest to basket- ball. We were very glad to have been a part of Hampton High School then, for our team took the laurels from an on-rushing Newport Basketball Team, and finally won the State Championship for Class “A” Basketball. The fall term came and went very fast, and when June finally arrived we were happy over our first success, for we had graduated to Sophomores. On returning to school, from our summer vacation, we arrived with a spirit of eager anticipation for we were no longer meek Freshmen, but the accomplished Sophomores. In our new dignity, we put away childish things, and tried to master Algebra, History and English, for we were anxious to become Juniors. Our football team, defeated only twice, sent the Blue and Gold back to Newport News in shame with a 14-0 defeat. When we returned to school from our Christmas holidays we elected the follow- ing officers: President, Thomas Bentzel; Vice-President, Shirley Elliott; Secretary- Treasurer, Pat Isley. Spring arrived with its enchantment of beauty and ecstasy of spring fever, for spring was the terminal of our Sophomore year. Then we left school for a long awaited vacation. At last! The time we all hoped for had arrived, now we were able to take part in school government. Since we had been in Hampton High School two years, we felt an inseparable band binding us to our school. This year our class was more than doubled by our later friends from Wythe and Phoebus. Truly this was a red letter year in the history of our school. By this time we organized our class. The following officers were elected: President, Bob Lerner; Vice-President, George Heflin; Secretary-Treasurer, Jean Lake. Spring came very soon. Since the end of school was drawing near and the plans for the Junior-Senior Prom were made, a feeling of sentiment rushed through our veins, for this class was the Senior Class of next year. We now realize that our last three years were not spent in vain, for the group of youths that first set foot in this school in 1938 are now Seniors, now experiencing the feeling that comes from a job well done. We have the unexplainable pride of undertaking a difficult task and sticking to it until our goal was reached, that goal, graduation, was now in sight. Having climaxed the autumn term with football games and the presentation of the fall play we left for the Christmas holidays. As the rings were ordered and the caps and gowns were fitted, it put us in a real atmosphere of graduation. Since this was our last year, election of class officers was a more serious task than before. This year the officers proved to be very efficient. Charles Hewins as President; Mary Lou Payne, Vice-President; Doris Davenport, Secretary- Treasurer. Long will we remember the day of commencement and of those happy days spent on the premises of our Alma Mater. — Jack Lawson, Class Historian. Given under our hands and seals this fourteenth day of April, the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty-two. In Witness Herein: Class of 1942 Thomas Bentzel and Jack Lawson By Kenneth Cogan Page Thirty-one PROPH6CY Today, June 10, 1952, is more than just another date in my mind. It is an addition to many days following the defeat of the axis powers, and ten years since I last saw the gleaming but sorrowful expression of the faces of the Graduating Class of ' 42. I wonder how many of us could at that time see ourselves as we are now, so entangled in the web of this spinning world? “Keep them rolling” were the very words of Statesman Hall Tennis as Henry Harmon, professional golfer, tried for the sixteenth time without success to hit the ball out of a sand trap. Three well-known sports photographers, Dick Ruggles, Bob Lerner and Jack Lawson were there with cameras taking pictures of Toni Willock and Henley Powell, the two “umph” girls co-starring in the latest picture, “Gaiety,” produced by George Topping. The sun was very hot and so Wayne Starkey, from the Pilcher and Clark Com- pany, did a thriving business selling Freeman’s Ice Cream and Baldwin’s Cool Aid to the spectators. About this time Jeanette Diggs and May Dawson came running over the hill by the eight green yelling, “The wolves are loose!” Police Commissioner John Gearhart blew his whistle for the patrol, Billy Weston, Kenneth Irvin, Warren Lanham, who were angry to find that the aggressors were only local playboys, Porty Brown and Glenmore Shelton. Mary Lou Payne, of the Wilem Daily , took advantage of this occasion to write a good story, just as her associate, Anne Westcott, rushed through the crowd and they both left for a scoop on the shore activities. Bob Smith, the new M. G. M. Tarzan, had just completed his ten mile swim from David Johnson’s Honey-Moon Island. Jackie Gunther and Anne Marshall were also there showing off the latest thing in bathing suits. The suits were the results from Charles Hewins’ latest experiment dealing with the bisected portion of a smashed atom. Otherwise they were made of practically nothing at all. Holly- wood ' s outstanding diving team, Elva Brack! and Betty Cock, were talking with two handsome life guards, Terry Carter and Jack Peake, the third, just as beachcomber Bob Johnson struck gold. Page Thirty-two Further up the beach Alice Taylor and Harry Waters, authorities on love, were consulting with experienced Jane Pugh. Earl Spencer and Glen Jones, two dis- tinguished bankers, were spending the day with Shirley Elliott, Doris Davenport, Vivian Lee Cummings, and Margaret Kirkpatrick, four glamorous models from New York. They were riding on the boardwalk in beach coaches pushed by James Lassiter and James White. There was a terrific crash as Babe Hughes, president of numerous things, and Vivian Griggs, a private secretary, riding a tandem, ran into Kenneth Cogan, Edgar Massenburg, Authur Thomas and Roy Nelson, all picking the winners for the 1953 football season. They had just decided on the teams coached by Floyd Bradd, Gilmer Sorrell, Otis Garrison and Eric Ahlmark. When they regained consciousness the evening activities were in full swing with Albert Hutton and his orchestra, featuring Hotlips Newell, and his water-cooled trumpet, and Rita Westphal and Lewis Parsons did a creative dance to the music of Wayne Crouse and his violin. This about completed the evening at the shore except for Robert Cramer and Julia Bennett who were still pondering over a checker game after a hard day’s work at their respected offices. Eleanor Schoonmaker, author of the latest biography entitled: “R. Gerald Hill,” and Lucile Burbank, an accomplished poet, were watching them with great interest. Marvin Lerner, manager of Bob Miller’s dancing team, was waiting to take Alene Austin, Jean Tillery and Peggy Brittingham, three hula dancers, home, but Duck Rowell, bouncer for Jack Barbour ' s Night Club, beat him to it. Outside, waiting for their chauffeurs were Peggy Edwards, with some millionaire, Donald Johnson her lawyer, and Betty Beard, whose triumphant role in “A Crabber Born and a Crabber Bred,” has won her a place on Broadway. Those of the Class of ’42 whom I have not mentioned are also making great strides on the road toward success, inevitable with the spirit of Hampton High. — Thomas Bentzel. Only outstanding students from the Vocational Shop are selected for this group by the Advisor. The Audiographic Staff meets each week for discussion of some of the types of equipment used, and individual members fill assignments for operation of equipment whenever necessary. Discussion at the weekly forum is designed to qualify the staff’s members to set up, operate, and care for the school ' s light projecting and sound amplifying equipment in a way that will assure its most satis- factory operation. During the year, this group has shown its ability in many ways. They were responsible for installing and operating the sound amplifying equipment used at most of the events held in the stadium. They cooperated with the Civilian Defense Program in making possible the use of a “roving microphone” in Darling Memorial Park during the demonstration of incendiary bomb control. They projected motion pictures at John M. Willis, Armstrong, Francis Asbury and Phoebus Schools, and they also gave their aid to several service organizations in Hampton. Halfback Bernie Rickett was the star of the day and proved himself worthy of being in the first string line up. HAMPTON 0— BENEDICTINE 0 Two evenly matched teams battled furiously on Darling Field to no avail. A scoreless deadlock resulted. Hampton threatened in the end, however, by opening a deadly aerial attack, making long gains. HAMPTON 0— MAURY 6 Hampton held the favored Mauryites to the small score of 6-0, yielding ground stubbornly. The lone Maury score came in the second period tallied by Keller. HAMPTON 0— SALEM 14 Plucky Andrew Lewis High invaded Hampton to hand us a defeat of 14-0. Lightweight Co-Captain Garrett scored once and converted twice after touchdowns. HAMPTON 6— T. JEFFERSON 19 The Crabbers made a brilliant showing at Richmond despite the fact that we bowed to the Teejays 19-6. Hampton’s score came in the third period when Rickett ' s pass to Bradd provided for the payoff. HAMPTON 0— HOPEWELL 6 Hopewell’s undefeated Blue Devils came to Hampton expecting an easy victory. However, they were thoroughly disillusioned. Only in the second period, through beautiful interference, did they happen to score. The conversion was blocked and from then on the game was uneventful. HAMPTON 8— GRANBY 34 The Crabbers were thoroughly the underdog when we met Granby’s Champions on Foreman Field. We did what was unexpected by scoring 8 points on them, two on a safety and 6 from a pass of Rickett’s to Edmonds. HAMPTON 20— LYNCHBURG 6 Glass High suffered ignominious defeat when Hampton invaded Lynchburg and downed the Senators 20-6. Rickett crossed the goal twice, Bradd once, Bradd also converting after two touchdowns. HAMPTON 6— NEWPORT NEWS 6 One of the most heartbreaking games of the season was played on Thanks- giving Day! Hampton scored in the first minutes of play resulting from Rickett’s pass to Bradd over the goal line. From then on Hampton outplayed the Typhoon, but Lady Luck was not on our side. The Typhoon score came in the third period on a line plunge by Williams. Both teams failed to convert. Page Seventy-three BASKETBALL TEAM Coach Assistant . . . . Manager . . . Assistant . . . . Throughout the season, players and students alike, showed great spirit and willingness to cooperate. Winning a total of five games out of eleven, the Crabbers split games with Maury, Woodrow Wilson, Newport News, Granby and annihilated Matthew Whaley.
