THE EIGHTEENTH VOLUME of The Krabba The Annual Publication of the Students of HAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL HAMPTON, VIRGINIA Hampton High School Foreword I his year, we, the Krabba Staff, got our collective heads together and decided to attempt to depict not only our school life, hut also by a few sketches, to give some- thing of the growth of our town. We looked back to the original Indian V ill age with the inhabitants sitting out- side their teepees. Then we saw the Landing of Braddock during the French and Indian War. We next attempted to picture the happy side of the life of the slaves. Our next drawing takes us to the burning of old St. John’s during the War Between the States and finally we come to the center of our present town. We have enjoyed Irv- ing to picture a few scenes in the development of Hampton and we have enjoyed gathering a record of this year at school. We put this book in your hands with llie hope that it will bring back to you in future years some happy memo- ries of your stay at H. H. S. Miss Katherine Madison Wicker Dedication To one who spent many years helping to enrich our school life, the Staff affectionately dedicates this 1940 Kral ha. H. ( 31 ) History of the Class of 10 When the door? of Hampton High School opened on the morning of Sep- tember 5, 1936. they opened not onl to the returning students, hut also to a group of hopefuls who looked terrible and felt worse. I util that morning these gawky looking creatures had been students without a school, but they were at that time entering a building which they, someday, hoped to call their school. Now, four years later we proudly say that that was the way in which we, the 1910 Graduating Class of Hampton High School, obtained our start in this great institution of learning. Scarcely had we gotten situated when we found ourselves witnessing our first football game as students of H. H . S. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing our team win that game, but little did we realize that they were to go on undefeated through the entire season and become State Champs. Following that glorious season of football, came basketball and Christmas vacation. After February vve could proudly say that we were upper-classmen. We were thrilled to see our superiors perform in the school plays and in the May Day exercises which were closely followed by our long awaited summer vacation. Returning the following fall it seemed to us to be altogether a different school and truly it was. No longer were we under the rule of a harsh and unkind bachelor, but we were under the leadership of a kind and loving hus- band. For while we were enjoying our summer vacation our beloved principal was married to one of our former teachers. Soon after we became settled, we organized our class and elected the fol- lowing officers: President. Marguerite Moberg; ice-President, V irginia Gar- ber: Secretary and Treasurer. Robert Starr. As football season closed, basketball followed; then Christmas holidays. VV hen vve received our grades in February, we noticed that the credits listed on our report cards bad become distinguishable, showing that the year and a half which we had spent in high school bad not been spent in vain. Then came track season and with its frequent track meets to break the monotony, we were again turned loose for the summer. We were only too glad to return and take up our posts as Juniors and with the addition of new students from Phoebus and George Wvtlie. the member- ship of our class was more than doubled. Football secerned more interesting to us that season because some of the members of our own class were representing our school on the gridiron. Our class was again organized and the following officers elected: President, be Newman; Vice-President. Marguerite Davenport; Secretarv and Treasurer, Helen Hanks. 1 32 ) Returning from Christmas holidays, we watched our basketball lean: easily win the opening games of the season and decided that they were worth watch- ing. While we continued lo watch they continued to win until they had become t ' late Champions for the first time in the history of the school. By this time many of us were looking forward with great interest to the approaching Junior-Senior Prom. That thrilling event passed and we began to realize that our days as Juniors were numbered. With the passing of track season, we found ourselves witnessing the depart- ure of the class of ’39. As we sat hack and watched them pass on. we realized that we were to fill the places which they left vacant. The school which we entered as Seniors was again different. A new stadium, two new tennis courts in the athletic field, and a new addition to the school building made it a much more pleasant place in which to study. Football was started in grand st le when our greatly admired and highly respected coach was married; soon after which our new stadium was dedi- cated iu a gay and colorful ceremony. To close his first season as a coaching husband, our newly married coach gave us a team which easily defeated our traditional rival, the (sold and Blue Typhoons of Newport News High School in an unforgelable game. We may proudly say that not once during our reign as students of Hampton High School did a Crabber team how in de- feat on the gridiron lo the shipbuilders. Our (dass rings were soon ordered, and we ful ly realized that we were well under way in our last year as high school students. We elected as our leaders: President, Edgar Cole; Vice-President, Robert Pennington; Secretary, Virginia Garber; Treasurer, Ernestine Landers, and as we had hoped, they were well worthy of the offices lo which we had elect- ed them. Basketball season started just before we were released for our Christmas vacation. Returning we seriously began to study, for even though we hated the thought of it, we knew our graduation was drawing near. Spring got off lo a poor start with snow on Easter, hut it soon became warmer, making our studying more difficult. Caps and gowns were fitted and invitations ordered as we began final prepa- rations for our departure. Track meets and Dramatics Club plays came in rapid succession to bring us to an event which we had looked forward to, but were now regretting — our graduation day. Now as we, the Class of ' 40. leave this school, which we have learned to love, we may truthfully say that the years which we have spent in H. H .S. were four of the most prosperous years in the history of the school and cer- tainly the happiest years of our lives. Alvin Bkittingham, Historian of the Class of ' 40. ( 36 ) Prophecy There comes a lime in every person’s life when he likes to just sit and think. Usually the main topic of thought is the high school days, “the happiest days of our lives,” as 1 have often heard. Being no exception this thinking period caught me one night while I was wait- ing for dinner. The main reason for my thinking was seeing in the paper that Alvin Britting- ham had heen awarded the Lloyd Tvsinger Trophy for winning the yachting race from Ber- muda to Hampton. Britt had as members of his crew: Preston Watkins, George Sparks, and Horace Mulling. He defeated in the race Eugene Hicks, skipper of the naval reserve boat, and Bobby Howard, skipper of the town of Hampton’s entry. Merchants of Hampton who owned the boat were Jakie Sear. Roy Mitchell, and George Koontz. I glanced over the rest of the sport page and at the top in big head lines was “Duck Defeats Spittsburg”. Reading on down the column I saw Elmer and Vernon Wilson were coaches of the Ducks and Howard Winters and Smuck Topping of Spittsburg. “Zipper” Crocker, son of the All American “Rip” Crocker, gave the Ducks the game in the last minute of play when he kicked a forty yard field goal. Turning the page to the society section, I saw pictures of the recent marriage of August Walker and Carol Reeve. Throwing the paper aside, I decided to take my wile, the for- mer Miss Shirley Sutton, out to a swell feed. We called a taxi and when it arrived, who should the driver he hut Harry Smith. He took us down town and when we got out, 1 noticed we were standing before Cutler’s Restaurant. When we entered there stood Nolan talking to the mangaer of the restaurant, Billy Phillips. He recognized us and came over to talk, and after a while there was a lot of commotion in the rear of the restaurant. Nolan called his bouncers who were Lynton Burr and Allan Turner. When we saw the cause of all the noise, we had to laugh, because Jack McCaffrey, head waiter, had just met his high school pal, Mathew Carli, who now was a General in the army. Other waiters were: Stadley Pittman. Louis Nelson, and Roger Guy. The cashier was Phyllis Hueter, and cigarette girls were Margaret Garner, Mary Moss, and Marie Knowles. After dinner, we started to leave when Nolan told us that the famous hand of George Lex and his “Music of Yesterday” was to play in ten minutes. We derided to wait, and when the time came, who should he in the hand hut Ray Wood, Ernest Wood, Sam Hutchins, and Charles Nixon. His vocalists were Virginia Decker. Keith Fitchelte and Billy Marlin. The feature of the hand was Marie Hulcher and her accordian. Bidding Nolan farewell we left the restaurant, and on our way down the street we saw on a window the word Welcome”. It was the formal opening of the “B Shop”. You know women, so we had to go in. On entering we met the hostesses; they were none other than Betty Byrum, Hope Bloxom. Dot B rum. and Barbara Burbank. We left them to their worries and journeyed further. We came to the famous Nixon Theatre and on the hill- hoard we noticed they were selecting the Miss America for 1950. Getting our tickets from Betty Ohrey. we were ushered to our seats by James Franklin. The master of ceremonies, Edgar Cole, silenced the music and announced the celebrities who were present. Among them were Fay DeGaris, one of the great actresses of screen and stage, Joyce Dore. Olympic swimmer. Marguerite Moberg. socially prominent. Paul Folse, famous publisher, the famous dance team. Eula Jamison and Doc Savage. Horace Pearce, doctor. Abe Newman, world known lawyer. Mr. Cole then introduced a hit of entertainment by way of a floor show. A chorus composed of Eouise Neal, Emily Bagnell. Adalee Sawyer. Emma I.ou Hughes, Elsie Guy. and Thelma Garner, under the direction of Marguerite Davenport and accompanied by Char- olette Buckley, sang several numbers, one of which was “1 ou Can Have Me If You Want Me”. Dot Kelton then did a modern dance, and the program was closed by all singing Dixie”. On leaving we meet Ann Howard and Robert Pennington. They were being trailed by Sant Grier, alone as usual. Strolling along home talking of the old pals we had seen. I discovered I was out of cigarettes. Excusing myself from my wife (boss) I entered a large doorway and much to my surprise who should he the manager of the drug store hut Nelson Fuller. On the mirror behind the fountain was a list of the specials for that day. One special took my attention. It was “Crab Cola”. This drink was put on the market by the Cole Carrol Bottling Works. Walking up to the cigarette machine I noticed that they were distributed by Thomas Russ. Bidding Fuller farewell I returned to find Shirley talking to her old chums Gwen Barber and Randy Lewis. They were on their honeymoon. We walked along till we found their car. They told us they would take us home. On getting into the car I humped my head only to find when 1 awoke that it was all a dream. The hump on my head was Shirley awak- ing me for supper. I told her of the dream and that I hoped each member of our class would he successful and happy and maybe someday we could have a reunion and really find out what life had held in store for each of us. This was the first High School Choir in Hampton. - The following June the Choir sang for the Baccalaureate Service. In the fall the choir sang in a concert with the Glee Cluh of Hampton High School and the Apprentice Glee Cluh. After Christmas Mr. Starnes immediately started the choir to work on “Gallia” a cantata for Good Friday to he presented with the Garrick Dramatics Club’s Play, “The Terrible Meek”. “Gallia” was one of the most difficult undertakings that the choir had ever done. They gave a superior performance. For June, 1910, the choir prepared two selections to he presented at the Baeealureate Service and (.lass Night. The choir, this year, may leave Hamilton High School with the thought that they sang their way to complete success. E. T. Lewis, Mi ss Kathryn Pace, and Mrs. Lawrence R. Wood. This Cluh derived its name from David Garrick, an eminent eighteenth century actor. The requirements for membership are interest in dramatics, satisfactory scholarship, and participation in school activities. Through the support of the faculty and student body of Hampton High School, the Garrick Dramatics Cluh has produced many successful plays. Among its outstanding productions are: The Whole Town’s Talking”, Highness”, “As You Like It”, “The Valiant”. “Pierrot — His Play”, “She Stoops To Conquer”, “El Cristo”, “Spooks”, “Remember The Day”, “Leave It To Psmith”, “Try It With Alice”, “Night of January 16th”, “The Brat”, and The Bat”. For its fall play, The Garrick Dramatics Club opened its eighth season with its twenty-seventh production. “Footloose”. This group was one of the first high school organizations of the nation to produce the play. Written by Charles Burdette, it ranks with his hest works due to its clever plot, light satire, and witty dialogue. We also want you to know that we have a picture on the snapshot page which never happened in real life — Bowman and McGhee really looking in a hook and Billy Cole actually studying. It can’t he so. hut pictures don’t lie. Junie Arnes on the snapshot page tells us he was just on the Jamestown ferrv, hut it looks more like a return trip from Sing Sing. Did you know that Paul Folse just missed being pushed off Old Point dock? Anyway, we hear he was threatened. We don’t think much of Thespians who go to New York and have to thumb rides in an ambulance. Regarding Marie Knowles ion the snap page) — who says two feet don ' t make a yard? Says Miss Boyenton Ion the S. S. page): What’s that in the road — a head? Way hack B. J. L. II. M. (before Jakie lost his money) had any of us ever played pool? Seriously speaking, we hear some good news from our Army Brats. Ned Shramm, Robin Olds, and Weston Maughan will enter the V. M. I. of the North, in other words, they are up for four years on the Hudson - - West Point, we mean. Aren’t we proud of Courtney Carter? Besides being on the Krahha Staff, he ups and wins the biggest honors in Spanish in the State Lingo Tournament. It was likewise won by a Carter from here last year - - P. S. no relation. Some of our senior girls ( Moberg, Howard. MeLure. et all are going to absorb atmosphere and stuff at Jamestown this summer. Congrats to Ann Wallace James for winning a scholarship to Goucher College. To get hack to our normal slate of mind, wouldn ' t you rather swim in the ocean than in the summertime? “Sid’ Moberg and that MeLure woman are going to study in a foreign country next year, and we do mean the backwoods of North Carolina! (Greensboro) Unless something happens in the summer, we shall start in the fall by contributing to the Student Relief Fund to get Ames, Pollock, and company a surer means of transportation. We hope Sam Grier will take a shootin’ iron with him when he goes down to Sewanee next fall as we hear that them tliar Tennesseeans are powful quick on the trigger. Hoot mon! That Scotchman, Stewart, is going to Fort McPherson next year. (He hopes) “Proportions” Brady and “Cuddles” Landers have not yet recovered from the Senior play. Nolan Cutler lost ten pounds on the Thespian trip. How? Horace Pearce will continue his studies (?) at V. P. I. next year if his desires are fulfilled. Keith Fitchette hates to he called “Pet”. We wonder why. The strong bond of friendship ( !) between Walker and Reeve will not be torn asunder any lime soon if our humble conjecture proves true. If this he slander, make the most of it.
