Trayniiam, David History of the Class of 1937 Do you remember September 1933 when we entered high school as Fresh men? It hardly seems that four years have intervened since that time, and that we are now on the threshold of graduation. Our high school life extended over that period of time will be a treasured memory in years to come, one in which we have mingled both our joys and sorrows. Flipping hack the pages of our school calendar to our Freshmen year, we come across those unforgetahle days when we received our first schedules, signed up in our first classes, and witnessed our first assemblies and pep rallies. Perhaps the exact dates are blurred in our memories, still we recall well the election of our class officers who were Bill Wyatt, president; Jane Winne, vice-president; Louise Masters, secretary; and Jeanette Cooper, treasurer. Nor can we forget those football and basketball games, the plays, the May Day exercises, those first exams, and those first credits of which we were very proud. That was our Freshmen year—the foundation for better things to come. So with the “march of time” we come to the beginning of our next school year when we were Sophomores. At first we possessed a feeling of superiority and wisdom hut it was soon crushed as we began to tackle such subjects as Caesar, Commercial Arithmetic, and Biology. Although no outstanding events took place during this year, it was at this time that we began to realize that we were a part of the school, not in its en¬ rollment alone, but in its functions as well. Nelson Groome, president; John Robins, vice-president; and Louise Masters, secretary-treasurer, were our class leaders. In June of that year wet took our last examinations, as they were dis¬ continued in the school the following term. With the turning of the pages of this historic calendar we entered upon quite an exciting year—the time when we were Juniors. Our class roll was in¬ creased then with new students from Phoebus and other schools. It was during the first part of this year that student activities tickets and a new grading system, in which numbers replaced letters, were instituted in the school. Many of us the krabba o entered into the school activities with equal success in dramatics, athletics, and scholastic organizations. If you remember, our class was not officially organized until the spring of ’36 when we chose for our officers, N. K. Lee, president; Kathleen Sheehan, vice- president; and Eleanor Rosser, secretary-treasurer. As usual we had the pleasure of entertaining the Seniors with the annual prom which was made possible by funds received from class dues, food sales, and sponsoring a motion picture. As the Junior girls took part in the commencement exercises last year, and as our class president received the cap and gown from the president of the class of ’36, we assumed the responsibilities of Seniors. However, it was not until fall, that we began to undertake these duties. Our class officers for the year were: Jeanette Cooper, president; Sallie Berkeley Drummond, vice-president; Mary Gibson, secretary; and Florence Moore, treas¬ urer. Since we were Seniors, naturally the members of our class were leaders in the school activities. So as our fingers glide over the events on this last page of our scholastic memoir, visions of those wonderful football victories, “My Man Godfre ,” the movie sponsored by the Senior class, the Phenix singers, and the cheering squad are clearly presented before us. Alas, we stop at a red letter date— Thursday, November 26, 1936. It is not Thanksgiving which makes this day outstanding for us, but the one on which our boys defeated Danville, thereby winning the Virginia State Scholastic Class “A” football championship. Fol¬ lowing this, time was spent on plays, Christmas programs, mid-term grades, basketball, and other activities. With the arrival of our rings, the order for the invitations, the pictures taken for the annual, and the election of class celebrities, graduation seemed to appear closer on the horizon. The word “graduation,” which had always brought joy and expectation to our hearts, now became sad at the thought of departure. So as we place aside this record of events, we know our memories will always bring us hack to those glorious days that the class of ’37 spent within the walls of our o dear Alma Mater. Sallie Berkeley Drummond Class Historian. Showed first signs of real power. Team showed itself to be a conference threat. This game created an atmosphere of confidence in the Crabber team. Defeated a good team and a very tricky one. Jefferson was supposed to have a great team but they were routed by a fighting Crabber team. A let-down—were looking toward Wilson. Hampton-Wilson Hampton-South Norfolk Hampton-Newport News Hampton-Danville Best game Crabber machine played all year. A breather for Newport News. A close shave, but the Crabbers played below their peak and Newport way above their usual game. Slow starting, but really going to town in the second half. Nov. 26 Football Summary 1936 Hampton ]2—Morrison 0 The Hampton Crabbers opened their 1936 season with a 12-0 victory over the Morrison Farmers. The Hampton learn rolled up eleven first downs to their opponents one but on the whole, the team showed ragged form. They fumbled the ball often and displayed a poor running attack. Hampton 32—Elizabeth City 0 The Red and White buried Elizabeth City under an avalanche of touchdowns in Darling Memorial Park. Coach Dick Esleeck’s team showed a great im¬ provement in running, passing, kicking, and handling the ball, over the week before when they beat Morrison only two touchdowns. Hampton 6—Maury 0 In their first conference game of the year Hampton defeated Maury 6-0 in Bain Field, Norfolk. The Crabbers playing alert and aggressive football recovered a Maury fumble on the Commodore’s 18 yard line at the end of the first quarter. Three line plays and a successful pass brought them a first down on the 10 yard line. Alter one try at the line Catlett dropped back and threw ' a pass to Captain Davis for a touchdown. The pass for extra point failed. Throughout the re¬ mainder of the game the Crabbers bottled up the Maury running and overhead attack to win a hard fought and well earned victory. Hampton 6—Petersburg 0 The Crabbers defeated Coach Roland Day’s team in a hard fought battle in Darling Park for their second successive conference victory. Following up Replogle’s recovery of a Petersburg fumble on the Crimson Tide’s 34 yard line with a brilliant aerial attack, the Crabbers drove to the 4 yard line. On the third down Edmonds drove over for a touchdown. The Crimson Tide got no closer to the Hampton goal line than the 26 yard line. This game marked the fourth that the Crabbers had kept their goal line still uncrossed. the kpabba Hampton 27— Thomas Jefferson 12 The Crabbers of Hampton High defeated Thomas Jefferson of Richmond 27 to 12 in a thrill packed game. This contest marked the third conference victory and the fifth of the season for Hampton. Tlie game was not as close as the score may show because one of Jefferson’s touchdowns came as tIre result of a recovered fumble on the Hampton 19 yard line and the other came on a long pass when a number of Hampton substitutes were in tbe game. The Jeffersonians were the first team to cross the Hampton goal, as it had remained uncrossed in two conference and two non-conference games before. Hampton 19 —Hopewell 13 The Hampton team journeyed to Hopewell and added the Wonder City boys as conference victim number four. Hampton scored twice in the first quarter, but Hopewell opened up an offensive of its own to score two touchdowns. The half ended with the score tied at 13 all. Not until late in the fourth quarter did Hampton break the tie. With about five minutes left to play the Crahhers started a sustained drive from mid¬ field which ended with Catlett ' s plunge over the Hopewell goal for the winning touchdown. The pass for extra point failed. Hampton 14—Wilson 0 The Hampton-Wilson game was played in Darling Memorial Park before four thousand people. This game was played in ideal football weather before a large crowd of “state championship-mad” football rooters. The Red and White scored twice in the second period, first on a 16 yard pass from Davis to Catlett and second on an 80 yard run of an intercepted pass by Hill. Replogle added both extra points from placement. This was the first victory over Wilson in the three years of Coach Dick Esleeck’s regime. Hampton 28—South Norfolk 0 The Crabbers defeated the South Norfolk Tigers 28-0. Catlett scored three touchdowns and Hill one. The four extra points were made from placement, three by Replogle and one by Catlett. In this game which was a tune up for Newport News, Coach Esleeck used his second and third strings freely. Hampton 13— Newport News 6 The Red and White gridsters of Hampton High defeated Newport News in Saunders Stadium before nine thousand people. The Crabbers pounded down into Typhoon territory early in the first quarter due to the superior kicking of Andrew Todd. With a first down on the 30 yard line the Crabbers tried two running plays but these failed, and on the next play Catlett passed 30 yards to Hill for a touchdown. Replogle kicked the extra point. Hampton kicked off and Newport News showing a surprising aerial attack scored on three plays the third being a 25 yard pass to Bartles for a touchdoivn. The try for extra point failed. At the beginning of the fourth quarter Hampton scored as the result of a sustained drive from their own 40 yard line. Replogle missed the placement for extra point. This Crabber victory was the first since 1932. Hampton 13—Danville 0 The Hampton High School squad journeyed to Danville and captured the state title, for the first time since 1912, by beating George Washington High 13-0. The Hampton hoys couldn’t get started during the first half, but they came back in the second half with a rush. They scored on a pass from Davis to Catlett after they had marched deep into Danville territory. Replogle kicked the extra point. The second score came on a plunge by Catlett after a pass to Hill had carried to the one foot line. Replogle missed the extra point. The Crabbers completely outplayed Danville and rolled up eleven first downs to Danville’s six. They kept their opponents from crossing the mid-field stripe. the KPABBA Basketball Squad Coach _ _ Dick Esleeck Manager _ — _ Charlie Newell Assistant Manager _ _ Phil James Captain _ - T - --- _ Nelson Catlett Foi wards Johnson Kraft Shackelford Harness Centers James Camnitz Rooney Guards Richardson Catlett W HEELER Replocle Basketball Scores 1936 Maury 30 Hampton 20 January 8 Wilson 19 Hampton 20 January 15 Suffolk 35 Hampton 13 (Class B) January 19 Newport News 44 Hampton 31 January 22 Thomas Jefferson 41 Hampton 21 January 29 Suffolk 48 Hampton 34 (Class B) February 5 Wilson 13 Hampton 29 February 9 Thomas Jefferson 29 Hampton 32 February 12 Maury 35 Hampton 33 February 23 Newport News 24 Hampton 18 February 25 Opponents Hampton Summary 10 games 328 points 251 points Won: 3 Lost: 7 Nelson Catlett was selected All Eastern Division Guard Track Team Coach _ _ Dick” Esleeck Manager _ Robert Turner Assistant Managers _ C.
