The year is 1975. After traveling around the world I return to my old home town of Hampshire, where I had been a high school teacher some time ago. Ihave decided to visit some of my former pupils. Upon arrival, I am amazed at the rapid growth of the city from a small community to a thriving metropolis. Across the street from the depot I notice a sign that says, ROCKENSOCK AGENCY. KEITH sells jet-powered automobile insurance. Another sign catches my eye. ORRELL RUTH SL CO. , General Contractors. On entering the building I am ushered through miles of corridors by JANET BEYER, his new combination artist, designer, and secre- tary. I find ORRELL dreaming of figures, but not necessarily geometrical. These visits are becoming more interesting. By now I am in the business district. I hear my name called and looking around I see Jr. Kray beckoning to me from the meat market. He tells me that his wife, the former LEONA BEART, is at home caring for thirteen fine children. Next I enter a cafe for a cup of coffee and find, to my surprise, that the cafe is owned by JANICE HOLZE. At the counter I sit next to JOYCE BAUMAN. From our conversation I find she is a speech teacher and record holder of the Non-Stop-Talk-Club. JOYCE says that BONNIE TATGE'S first job was washing windows on the Empire State Building. . . she was really living high. However, the latest news is that she was demoted for spying on all the hand- some lawyers, and is now back at S. S. Kresge 8x Co. On the counter is a copy of the Hampshire Register. Glancing through it I see ---- PI-IYLLIS ROHRSSEN announces her engagement to William Lovejoy. She's quite a Bill collector. ln the society column I see SHELBY ALLEN is taking time off from her busy schedule of night club appearances to play her accordian in the Hampshire orchestra. On the opposite page I see MAXINE BAKER'S smiling face on a tooth paste ad. She has become a model and soon hopes to be a cover girl' What's this? MICKEY GROEBNER has married a New York millionaire and is honey-mooning in Texas, picking out new oil wells. In the want-ad section my eye is caught by CAROL SCHlESHER'S advertisement for a new dancing partner, She has become the rage of the night club circuit. The reliable old Hampshire Register tells me that JOAN SUNDERLAGE is in town vacationing with her husband. She and Freddie have made Zier's Sunshine Farm an agricultural show place. The headline in the sport page reads, Q.-E HOSPITALIZED WITH BROKEN TOE. He stubbed it as he crossed the finishing line after winning the annual race around Lakelvlichigan. Other sport items---DONNA DEIHS is now manager of the women's branch of the Globe Trotters. Her team has just won the world's basketball champion- ship. LOU ANN GRAY won the women's bowling championship with a 240 average. It's no wonder she is president of the National Women's Bowling Association. Suddenly there is the sound of screeching brakes outside the cafe. The waitress tells me it is JIM GETZELMAN, the fabulous sports car builder and salesman. As I leave the lunch room and continue my walk, I am almost knocked from my feet by a girl who is in a terrific hurry. I recognize KAREN HOLZE and manage to detain her long enough to learn that she is teaching Spanish to African natives. As KAREN leaves, I notice a large house set back in a grove of stately elms. The sign says, CARLSON'S COMFY HOME. Upon investigation I find CAROL has established a home for tired teachers. l'm not tired yet so I continue looking for my old students. My steps lead me to the laboratory of that up-and-going scientist, MARVIN MENGEL- ING. He has just invented a smog preventive. Leaving MARVIN 'S laboratory, I re-enter the business district where the billboards at the Hampshire Theater catch my eye. The movie is the latest release of the famous French movie producer, JIM FILLMORE. In lights I see the names of RUTHANN BAHR, TINA BALL, and BOYD REID, all my former pupils. I buy my ticket and am escorted to my seat by the prettiest usherette in the theater, ELAINE CONRO. She tells me that the first act is TINA singing some of the day's top IILIUCS. RUTHANN is to play her guitar while singing hillbilly songs. A blare of trumpets announces the main attraction. BOYD and his trombone enter. He appears nervous because he usually plays a sousaphone-trombone duet with JOHN DUCHAJ, but it seems that JOHN had an accident. While trying to get out of his sousaphone to take a bow, his feet got so mixed up with his knees and arms that he suffered a severe case of musical mix-up. As I leave the theater I see it is time to catch my train, so I must bid good-bye to Hampshire and my former and now successful cherubs. Compliments of HAMPSHIRE REGISTER
