THE DAY WAS AUGUST 26 WHEN the second bell was rung at 8:50 a.m. to start the 1987-88 academic year, the two-hundred- eleventh, at Hampden-Sydney College. The day was a special day, because it marked our first day of classes with our new president, james R. Leutze. Most of us who had had the opportunity of knowing President Bunting were quite naturally skeptical of the new ideas that President Leutze would bring forward to enhance the College. However, as the year went by, we realized that his idea was not to strip Hampden-Sydney of the reputation that she is so famed for, on the contrary, it was to excel at the old ideas and bring in new ideas that would be challenging and interesting.
