Sl ...- 53 xi 5 ik THE FUTURE OF I-IAMPDEN-SYDNEY: WILL BROWNING BE WITH RAY GASKINS IN APRIL? bv DR. MARY SAUNDERS Like virtuallv anv place on earth at virtuallv anv point in time, at least anv point from about the mid- eighteenth-centurv onwards, llampden-Svdnev College is c aught between two worlds. The phrase is in Nlatthew P-.rnold's Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse and is part of .i lament that one of the worlds is dead while the other is powerless to be born. llaving bv now bored a generation or two of students at ross the countrv with Nlatthew Arnold, I will resist the temptation to comment much further on this masterpiece of the Victorian Age. fXY'here else'fl Arnold's two worlds were the world of faith and some hoped-for state of moral and cultural affairs that would provide a sustaining replacement for waning spiritualitv, Ilampden-Svdnev's two worlds are what I shall call the Vforld of Browning in April and the World of Rav Gaskins. But Ilamp- den-Svdnev, unlike the Europe of Arnold's sad vi- sion, is a place where both worlds are verv much alive - and will be, predicts this modest Cassandra, well through the second millennium. The Xforld of Browning in April is the world of Dr. Crawlev's lectures: comforting in its resonance, stuffed full of knowledge of the past, and alwavs somewhat, if not verv much behind. hlanvls the April morning when, in mv office in the Nlorton basement, I have heard booming down from Room 5 the emphatic tones of Dr. Crawlev reading from Brow-mng's lVlv Last Duchessuz Thats mv last Duchess painted on the wall, Looking as if she were alive. I tall That piece a wonder, now. Fra Pan- dolf's hands Yforked busilv a dav, and there she stands. Yfilllt please vou sit and look at her? Sometimes Dr. Crawlev stops here to ask, Now class, new is going to sit and look at her? Some- times he reads on to the depth and passion of the Dui hess's earnest glanc e. But mv point is that nearlv alwavs these pleasant moments in mv eavesdropping occur in mid or late April. The course, vou see. is English Log, which begins its travels circa 1798 and is supposed to c arrv the students through the poetrv and novels of modern England, perhaps even to msc- or 'oo Ht Last Duchess was published in 15.11. our semester ends about two weeks for soon- c-ri aficr llr lfrawlt-v's rendition of the Duchess's fate. The world of Dr. Crawlev and Browning in .-Xpril, of a past so huge that it will not be confined within the structure of the semester, is also, of course, the world of john Brtnklev and Graves Thompson, of George Bagbvs How to Attack a Poem, of cold Cushing showers, and of me: a woman so far behind in everv wav that it was onlv during this past Christmas that she discovered the existence of the steam iron for convenient home use. Happilv, however, for those of us who like to hear Browning at anv time, but particularlv in April, we still have manv students who enlov belonging to that farefrom-dead world. I quote from a paper submitted in january, 1983: You should maior in computer sciences if vou want to find a high paving job. Nowadavs everything is done with computers' That was mv father's re- sponse after I asked for his opinion on what I should do with mv life, Unfortunatelv for him that ls. the last thing in the world that I want to do is work with computers. Anv time I hear the word cornputfr I feel like throwing up. I detest that little three svllable word. It's not so much the machine itself that I despise: instead it is the people, the ones claiming that man can't function without computers, that make me sick . . . Thev are the ones carrving the strangelv folded sheets of paper, invariablv on their wav to the CPU room, and all the while muttering some strange gibberish about being on a line because of some crashed head. These are the people that believe that all the world's problems can be solved simplv bv shoving a punched card into a machine and then waiting for the answer to appear on a television screen. And here we come to the Yforld of Rav Gaskins: the world, too, of the Interscience Major fDid vou know about that one? Courtesv of the math and phvsics departments . . . l and of the ecologicallv economical new dormitories. At decent intervals, I pav glad homage to this world. I take everv opportu- nitv to grin at Rav Gaskins, and sometimes A Oh Liberal .-Xrtsl - I share a lunch table with him. And usuallv everv three months, alwavs in the presence of an administrator, I find occasion to remark that This summer I am going to take a computer course. There are so manv wavs, I am sure that computers could help us in teaching literature as well as Rhetor- ic. But mavbe I won't do it this summer. I want to take just the right course, so important for the future. Smiles all around. Yet I do love the world of Rav Gaskins. It's an important new world, no question about it. It's the world of monev and progress and new ideas, of people more preoccupied with work and ambition than with their haircuts and shirt tails falwavs out when en route to the computing centerl. I positivelv glow whenever some nervous, unkempt voung man rushes out of mv office to keep a date with those stern keyboards of destinv: Thank God it's him, not me. but thank God, too, that someone is keeping that date, thank God for Rav Gaskins. So, in a wav, we've got it all here, here in this little place supposedlv far from anvwhere, WIC have the new machines and the old poets, and we have them in a place so intimate that we can all share in the effect of both. Yfomen or few women, demogra- phics or no demographics, this two-worldeness of I lampden-Svdnev is its special qualitv, and I believe that both the qualitv and the school will busily survive long into the future. CQMMENCEMENT MAY 8, 1983 ul 7-1 ,O W x if CQNIMENCEMENT THE NIGHT BEFQRE CCDMMEN CE TI-IE ALEDICTGRY ADDRESS Timothy Gerard lVIcCiarry Senator Trible. honored guests, President Bunt- ing, members of the faculty and administration, family and friends, Beth, and most importantly, graduating members of the Class of 1983. I was going to begin bv mentioning and thanking my brothers and sisters, but Dean Poteet told me to make sure I didn't speak all day. But you know who YUU are, On the cover of one of the Admissions Officeis flashy pamphlets on Hampden-Sydney is a quota- tion attributed to President Bunting: Here at Hampden-Sydney College, we're going to squeeze your life like a sponge. Vl'ell. I guess the adjective that describes us best today as we graduate is squeezed, and in a special way, we owe much gratitude to everyone and everything that makes up what Hampden-Sydney is. The charter of Hampden-Sydney clearly states that the Colleges objective is to train good men and good citizens, and our education from Hampden- Sydney was cast in this mold. But sometimes we get too close to really observe the beauty of the school. As with a great work of art, when viewed too close, brushmarks and colors have no continuity and only gain life when we view the painting from a distance. As seniors, sometimes we view the picture of Hamp- den-Sydney from too close a distance. and I would like to briefly step back from the easel to see three main points about the school. The undisputed job of the College is to teach. I lampden-Sydney embraces a liberal arts curriculum in which we study topics ranging from the glvcolyrie pathway, to Keats' poetry. to supplv-side economics, to the strange mysteries of Physical Chemistry. But attitudes are taught just as importantly as facts. Professors like Dr. Graves Thompson teach more through their examples than any book could ever encompass. llugh Sidey, in his address to the Col- lege last fall on Intellect and Public Service, stressed that john Kennedy was one of the best presidents primarilv because of his endless, bound- less curiosity. llientiedyl wanted to learn. He want- ed to know everything. This may be the most impor- tant element in intellect. This tells a person that lc-.irniiig nc-i er ceases. This reveals to the mind pos- sessing the trait that the more one learns. the more he realizes how little he knows. This understanding induces .i kind ol humility and Sc ares off arrogance. .-X liberal cdutatioiei, whit li we can see embodied in men like john Kennedy and Dr. Thompson. predis- poses us to greet that which is new to us with curiosity and fascination rather than fear or con- tempt. But intellect itself is not enough. A great heart and no intellectual background is nothing. Intellect is a part of our education here, but our training is advanced in many arenas outside the college library. A vital aspect of education lies in the Athenian ideal ment Sana in rorpore sans. a sound mind in a sound body. I quote from the Latin to appease Mr. Brinkley but also to give us much needed practice in translation, for the first time in a long time. our diplomas this year will be in Latin. Hampden-Syd ney competes on the no-athletic-scholarship Divi- sion III level, and sport here is not a job. but an enjoyable learning experience. lVlen like President Bunting and Coach Bill Reid instill in us values of dedic ation, hard work. and teamwork that cannot be learned in a classroom. Scholarship and athletics are big parts of our education. but we work in a Christian environment which enhances and furthers our education at Hampden-Sydney. In this field especially, we learn much from the examples of our teachers. Dean Drew works tirelessly to promote honor as an ideal that will never be outdated. A story of a freshman trigonometry teacher sums up the value placed on honor. After passing out an unproctored exam, the professor quietly addressed the class. Today I am giving you two examinations, one in trigonometry and one in honesty. I sincerely hope you pass them both, but if you must fail one, let it be the trigonom- etry, for there are many good men in the world ic-ho cannot pass a trigonometry exam, but there are no good men in the world today who cannot pass an examination in honesty. I could continue in this vein forever, but I won't do that. I was warned before this speech not to speak in platitudes and if I have been guilty of this, I lay all the blame on my subject. I deeply appreciate what Hampden-Sydney has done for me. lN'Iy point to you, niv classmates, is that Hampden-Sydney has given us much. Caring people like President Bunt- ing, Dr. Thompson, Dean Drew, and Coach Reid give pieces of themselves to us to make us better people. And to those who have given much, much is expected. I could go on for hours extolling the college. but I wonlt even begin preaching to you or doling out advice. I feel acutely unqualified for the post. But what I can offer you is a challenge. Don't waste your education from Hampden-Sydney. Take the example of the people here, and give to the extent you have received. As Lady lVIacbeth im- plores, screw your courage to the sticking place. Dare to be the best you can be. Hampden-Sydney is a great place, but it is not without fault. Apathy and demagoguery are present. Some people irresolutely close their eves and minds to beliefs foreign to them, and stubbornly cling to prejudiced personal views irrespective of any evidence to the contrary. Vile miss out on many valuable aspects of life when we are too prejudiced to consider other views. Rise above these trends in order to reach your full potentials. No less a source than Albert Einstein once wrote something that I first saw on the cover of a General Physics textbook. His words meant a lot to me then, and I wrote them down on the back of my notebook. If you retain anything at all that I say today, remember Einstein's words: A hundred times a day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labours of other men, living and dead. and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving. Seniors, I hope you can realize how fortunate we have been to be able to attend Hampden-Sydney, and I challenge you to take full benefit from this gift. Before I close. I could not face myself if I did not thank the people who have meant the most to our educations before, during, and after our tenures at Hampden-Sydney. I feel confident in taking this opportunity to trulv be a spokesman for my class when I thank you, our parents. Rhetoric class or not, sometimes it is not easy to put in words our true feelings, so please accept this achievement of our graduation as a symbol of the love and gratitude we owe to you but can never fully repay. Thank you verv much, and congratulations. Sen- iorsl COMMENCEMENT TI-IE CQMMENCEMENT ADDRESS The Honorable Paul S. Trible, Jr. US. Senator from Virginia 1' Atl.mt.i. ' li -'IJ is JWIISNTS A eolleagtie of mine at another college once told me that there iiere two most important parts to any yearbook: the cover and the CLIIIOIXN note. I .im not sure that I agree with the idea that the cover Is among the most important parts, but I do agree that the .icknowledgnients section is important to any yearbook. The 1983 li:XI,IiIDOSCOIJIf is no exception. As I put the finishing touches on this year's book, I can't help but realize that .1 yearbook is not .1 one man show. I also realize that, due to .1 lack of space and ability to remember everyone who took part in the production of the KALEIDOSCQPE, I am unable to mention each person. For this I apologize. I would like, however to express my thanks to the following persons: David lVIcEnderfer and Gregan Crawford, the leaders of the H-S Photo Service. IWr. Kenneth S. Mr. Nlichael Smith, our publisher's representative who was always around to answer my stupid questions. hir. joseph H.
