men and good citizens has continued to be the dream of those who came to lead the col- lege. President Gammon, President Robert, and President Gilmer upheld the primary goals ofthe college and increased it.s strength. The student body passed the fire hundred marlf and the ,faculty reached thirty-two in number. Gammon Gymnasium l194Oi, johns Auditorium l1951i, Eggleston Librafll l1961i, and N'inston Hllll,kf17l'Il1L'I'lil the Library which burned in 1941, H9622 increased the ejfec- ticeness of the physicalkhlcilities. The last fourteen years haue been the presentfor me. These years have been lived in the grateful awareness that Hampden-Sydney of today stands on the shoulders of those who hare serred before us. We, too, shall pass on a goodly heritage. New facilities hace been con- structed: an able and devoted faculty has been assembled, the personal quality of a .small college has been preserved eten though the size of the student body has growng the academic program has been strengthened and it.s liberal arts quality has been retainedg the relatedness to the Presbyterian Church has been reaffirmed and given a new structure designed to enhance the Christian witness in the College and in the Synod of the Virginias: and the fiscal stability of the College luis neeer been greater. These adrances haue, like all progress, not been without stress and struggle. They have been accomplished because the Hampden- Sydney community, both on the campus and wherever parents,friends, and alumni may be found, is richly endowed with men and women of integrity, wisdom, and faith. Too strong to be cowed by adversity, too noble to aet for self serving ends, and too diligent to be diverted to petty acts, they have served the College well. These are the persons who have made the past fourteen years fruitful for the College and richly rewarding for Mrs. Re- Lfeley and me. These same persons will .sustain and enrich the leadership of President Bunt- ing. What, then. can one say of the future? Lit- tle, in truth, if what one wants to know is on what date the Athletic Center will be com- pleted or when the endowment will reach twenty million dollars. Howeuer, without even recourse to a crystal ball, one can say that the College has a young and capable new President whose leadership will bring the College to new highs in achievement and strength -and all three of the former presi- dents now living will rejoice with hinz in that progress. ,ii ..,, . 2 , i Y ,f-ffm. .
