men and good citizens has continued to be the dream of those who came to lead the col- lege. President Gammon, President Robert, and President Gilmer upheld the primary goals ofthe college and increased it.s strength. The student body passed the fire hundred marlf and the ,faculty reached thirty-two in number. Gammon Gymnasium l194Oi, johns Auditorium l1951i, Eggleston Librafll l1961i, and N'inston Hllll,kf17l'Il1L'I'lil the Library which burned in 1941, H9622 increased the ejfec- ticeness of the physicalkhlcilities. The last fourteen years haue been the presentfor me. These years have been lived in the grateful awareness that Hampden-Sydney of today stands on the shoulders of those who hare serred before us. We, too, shall pass on a goodly heritage. New facilities hace been con- structed: an able and devoted faculty has been assembled, the personal quality of a .small college has been preserved eten though the size of the student body has growng the academic program has been strengthened and it.s liberal arts quality has been retainedg the relatedness to the Presbyterian Church has been reaffirmed and given a new structure designed to enhance the Christian witness in the College and in the Synod of the Virginias: and the fiscal stability of the College luis neeer been greater. These adrances haue, like all progress, not been without stress and struggle. They have been accomplished because the Hampden- Sydney community, both on the campus and wherever parents, friends, and alumni may be found, is richly endowed with men and women of integrity, wisdom, and faith. Too strong to be cowed by adversity, too noble to aet for self serving ends, and too diligent to be diverted to petty acts, they have served the College well. These are the persons who have made the past fourteen years fruitful for the College and richly rewarding for Mrs. Re- Lfeley and me. These same persons will .sustain and enrich the leadership of President Bunt- ing. What, then. can one say of the future? Lit- tle, in truth, if what one wants to know is on what date the Athletic Center will be com- pleted or when the endowment will reach twenty million dollars. Howeuer, without even recourse to a crystal ball, one can say that the College has a young and capable new President whose leadership will bring the College to new highs in achievement and strength -and all three of the former presi- dents now living will rejoice with hinz in that progress. ,ii ..,, . 2 , i Y ,f-ffm. . MEMORIES BY W. T YLOR REVELEY In August, 1921, President Eggleston wrote hi.s Hampden-Sydney classnulte, Dr. Wood- worth. Dr. Eggleston had been president at Hampden-Sydney for two years and was de- scribing the .state of affairs on campus: My two years of work here have been pleasant, but very strenuous. The College was in a very critical condition and the atmosphere was one of pes- simism. I believe things are now on the up grade and the pessimism is gone. The outlook is good, and I believe tlzat in a few years we will have all the stu- dents we want and can handle. Last .session we added the ninth and tenth profes.sors, and next session we will add the eleventh, and it looks as if we will break the attendance record of1-15 yearsf, Dr. Eggleston had arrived in a difficult period of Hampden-Sydneyfs history. During the twenty years of his tenure as president he was to face even more difficulties as he suc- cessfully led the College through the depres- sion. New buildings were added: Bagby Hall l1922j, The College Shop -now Office of In- stitutional Development U9282, an addition to the Library - now Winston Hall KI9-362, Morton Hall U9-362. The last two major addi- tion.s to the campus were constructed during depression years. In a letter August 1, 1919, Dr. Eggleston wrote: You will be interested to know that we are installing an electric light system for Hampden-Sidney.M The fac- ulty increased during these years from nine in 1919 to twenty in 1939 and the student body grew from 157 to almost four hundred. A distinguished educator prior to accepting the presidency of his alma mater, Dr. Eggles- ton had come to Hampden-Sydney with some reluctance. In the same letter he revealed: I declined the Presidency of Hampden-Sydney under the old condi- tions, but when the College was taken over by Synod and the Board appointed by Synod offered me the position again, I decided to accept. I have for several years rather hoped that the time would come when I could devote all of my time to definite and active Christian work and this call seemed to fit in with this wish. The quest for quality of mind and het ich characterized Dr. Eggle.ston's leaf ers-hip and which found its .source .spring in Samuel Stanhope Smith fs vision that a colle be established to train young men to be goo 13
