MEMORIES BY W. T YLOR REVELEY In August, 1921, President Eggleston wrote hi.s Hampden-Sydney classnulte, Dr. Wood- worth. Dr. Eggleston had been president at Hampden-Sydney for two years and was de- scribing the .state of affairs on campus: My two years of work here have been pleasant, but very strenuous. The College was in a very critical condition and the atmosphere was one of pes- simism. I believe things are now on the up grade and the pessimism is gone. The outlook is good, and I believe tlzat in a few years we will have all the stu- dents we want and can handle. Last .session we added the ninth and tenth profes.sors, and next session we will add the eleventh, and it looks as if we will break the attendance record of1-15 yearsf, Dr. Eggleston had arrived in a difficult period of Hampden-Sydneyfs history. During the twenty years of his tenure as president he was to face even more difficulties as he suc- cessfully led the College through the depres- sion. New buildings were added: Bagby Hall l1922j, The College Shop -now Office of In- stitutional Development U9282, an addition to the Library - now Winston Hall KI9-362, Morton Hall U9-362. The last two major addi- tion.s to the campus were constructed during depression years. In a letter August 1, 1919, Dr. Eggleston wrote: You will be interested to know that we are installing an electric light system for Hampden-Sidney.M The fac- ulty increased during these years from nine in 1919 to twenty in 1939 and the student body grew from 157 to almost four hundred. A distinguished educator prior to accepting the presidency of his alma mater, Dr. Eggles- ton had come to Hampden-Sydney with some reluctance. In the same letter he revealed: I declined the Presidency of Hampden-Sydney under the old condi- tions, but when the College was taken over by Synod and the Board appointed by Synod offered me the position again, I decided to accept. I have for several years rather hoped that the time would come when I could devote all of my time to definite and active Christian work and this call seemed to fit in with this wish. The quest for quality of mind and het ich characterized Dr. Eggle.ston's leaf ers-hip and which found its .source .spring in Samuel Stanhope Smith fs vision that a colle be established to train young men to be goo 13
