Jewett, Editor John D. Feldmann, Business Manager 3 Dedication There is in every college or university a man whose mere presence is an asset to the in- stitution. This type of person commands both the respect and friendship of students and the admiration of his colleagues. His very presence on campus lends both color and quiet dignity to college life. Such a man is Mr. Elmo B. Firenze. Through his twenty-two years of unending service to Hampden-Sydney Mr. Firenze has been both a friend of the student and an ex- tremely able teacher. Hampden-Sydney owes quite a lot to Elmo B. Firenze, and in this spirit we the staif of the 1968 Kaleidoscope dedicate this book. 4 These are the days of wine and roses out of a misty dream our paths merge for awhile then disappear within a dream. The offense dominated play as Phil Rome and Mike King led the Tigers attack which amassed 404 yards. King ran for 143 yards and Rome had the first of 4 consecutive days with over 100 yards rushing. The Scots scored first with a 37 yard field goal and after recovering an H-SC fumble, scored again on a 46 yard pass play. From then on it was all Hampden-Sydney. Rome scored on a three yard plunge and passed to Jimmy Lee for the two point conversion. if - -Q 's-215.5 5 ,1 72? ,C -J 35 af N655 .yan 154 ,,.v-3 After a long drive in the third quarter. King took the ball in from the one. King was par- ticularly effective with his passing, but some credit must be attributed to Rome who kept the defense honest with his running. The Shephard game saw the Tigers put on their most awesome scoring performance of the year as they thrashed the Ilanns 41-7. Once again it was Rome who shined. He scored 3 touchdowns and rushed for 162 yards. The defense came into its own as Mike Krupin, Nlike Vaughan, Bub Douglas and Bob Unrue lead the Tiger's 4-4 attack. Gary Wheeler was commended for his block- ing on H-SC's power sweeps and Jim Whor- ley showed promise at running back. Cap- tains Jewett and Rome won the Civitan Tro- phies as the game's outstanding Lineman and Back. Fumbles were the difference when the Tigers visited Sewanee and came up on the short end of a 14-3 score. A quick look at the statistics showed the Tigers led in total yard- age, 331 to 244, and in first downs, 18 to 15. The overwhelming statistic however was the seven Hampden-Sydney fumbles, four of which were recovered by Sewanee. Phil Rowe and Mike King again paced the offen- sive effort with 108 and 64 yards respectively. This, incidentally was Rome's lowest output of his short season. An especially bright spot was the cool performance of freshman Ricky Beale when quarterback Mike King was side- lined. -'sv?'S?f ' lf.'fii1i'3,!275 i'T ,g ' V - '-:' , .zm ' . ff-M '. They have yet to beat a Hampden-Sydney football teanl in the 24 years of the rivalry. Rome again starred as he had the greatest day of his career. Of course, the interior line of Jewett, Goode, Michael, and Dodson were opening holes big enough to drive a truck through. Rome scored four touchdowns on runs of 2, 7, 23, and 2 - yards. The Tigers amassed 543 yards in XX total offense and Rome had 205 on the ground. The H-SC defense allowed Bridge- water only 68 yards on the ground as Dodson and Mackey performed like the All-Mason- Dixon players they are. Don Wingfield booted a 35 yard field goal and King hit 7 out of 10 passes for 93 yards. 'S 106 Phil Rome's great career started his Freshman year when he was first discov- ered in the Westem-Maryland game. Fate or not, it ended there his senior year. Going into this game Phil had 638 yards rushing and when he was forced to leave in the 2nd Quarter, he had 666 yards in just over 4 games. Rome was lost but Whorley had his best game ever. The trap blocking of Goode and Michael was tremendous and Jim scored 3 times while rushing for 74 yards. His first score of 34 yards was one of the finest displays of balance and second effort ever seen at H-SC. King completed 8 passes for 88 yards. Defense again was the dif- ference as Krupin, Edwards, Mackey, Lee, and Douglas did a fine job. The Ti- gers were 4-1, but the loss of Rome would be definitely felt in the next five games. . W Sz L was the Tigers poorest showing of the year. They just couldn't seem to get going. The Generals utilized 5 in- terceptions and 2 recovered fumbles to come out the victors 12-0. Mike King threw for 56 yards and ran for an addi- tional 53 as the Tigers had 8 more first downs than W 8: L and over 100 yards more in total offense. Rick Beale, a Freshman, had a good day as King's re- placement and proved that he was more than capable of directing the Tiger's at- tack. After a disappointing showing at Wash- ington 8: Lee, the Tigers went to Emory, Va. to take on the Wasps of Emory and Henry. It was the worst defeat that the Tigers have suffered in recent years, but it was against one of the best Emory e xx x. lf ,q'Fg.-xg. : 1- ' ,A .- , . S' and Henry teams ever. The Tigers were the first to score as they moved down the field on the first series of downs. Jim Whorley scored on a booming 6 yard run for the only Tiger score of the night. From then on, it was all Wasps. Sonny Wade who was chosen the outstanding Virginia small college foot- ball player showed why he deserved this honor. Before he was replaced in the fourth quarter, he had scored three touchdowns and completed 16 of 22 passes. His receiver was Lee Bales whom the Tigers feel is just as potent as Wade. Donnie Lee played well on defense, but without Rome the 'Tigers just didn't have the horses to keep up with the Wasps. With a 4-3 overall record, the Tigers enter- tained a highly underrated Frederick College team and came out on top 16-0. It was their first victory in 3 games and proved they could win without Rome. The offensive sta- ' ...uf -v tistics were aproximately equal, but it was the H-SC defense that proved the difference. In this game, a possible star of the future emerged in Robert Woltz. His running, along with the passing of King to Jimmy Lee and Gary Wheeler's fine blocking led to the first Tiger score. Woltz's 12 yard run put the icing on the cake and upped the Tigers slate to 5-3. The Colonels of Centre College, Lexington, Ky. are notorious for their strong, hard-nosed defense and as usual their defense shined as they came from behind to defeat the Tigers. 14 1'-+'1k'. Q it 521 X The Colonels spotted the Tigers 14 points and then came back to win a heart- breaker 21-14. The Tigers drew Iirst blood as they scored on a beautiful 26 yards pass from King to tight end John Mack. The second score was on a two yard plunge by Robert Woltz. It was, however, the passing of King to tri- captain Jim Lee in key yardage situa- tions which led to both Tiger scores. Lee caught five of King's passes for 65 yards. It was receptions like this which earned Lee All-State and All Mason-Dixon hon- ors. The winning Centre touchdown came in the last minute when a poor H-SC punt gave the ball to Centre. The Tigers re- covered a fumble, but an intercepted pass gave the Colonels the ball on the Tiger 25. Three plays later it was all over. r-' They call Randolph-Macon vs. Hampden- Sydney the Small College Classic of the South. At least Chuck Thompson probably would. ln recent years the underdog has always won, but this year just wasn't our year. The Tigers opened up the scoring on a sustained drive with Jim Whorley taking it over for the score. Utilizing field position, The Jackets managed to tie it up by the half. They received the kickoff in the third quarter and marched ou to make it 14-7. On a com- bination of the running of Jim Whorley and the passing of Mike King, the Tigers evened things up in the fourth quarter. A poor punt and some costly penalties made it 17-14 Ma- con. On the last play a desperation pass from Mike King to Heber Himmelwright was picked off and run back 87 yards for a score. The Hampden-Sydney basketball team, under Coach Bill Pegram, entered the 1967-68 season with a nucleus of only seven lettermen and a group of promising freshmen. Co-captain Denis Soden, Fred McNeer, and Charlie Cobb were ligured to be the ring-leaders of the Tiger attack, while freshmen Dave Trumbower, Hal Absher, and Danny Chizever all fought for starting berths. A great deal depended upon the maturation of these freshmen if the Tigers were to enjoy a suc- cessful season. The Tigers opened their campaign in a .most impressive fashion by sweeping the Florida South- ern Tournament on December lst and Znd. On successive nights the Tiger quintet downed Mer- cer College and Rollins College by the scores of 88-83 and 84-79 respectively. Hampden-Sydney, paced by the outside shoot- ing of McNeer and the inside work of Soden, upped their record to 4-0 with consecutive vic- tories over Lynchburg and R.P.I. As coach Pe- gram had hoped, Absher and especially Trum- bower were aiding the Tiger cause considerably. The unblemished record was readily blackened by the team's losing four of the next five contests in two Christmas tournaments. Following a second win over R.P.I., the Tigers returned to Death Valley to hand visiting Bridgewater a 76-61 set- back. Sparked by the defensive play of Soden and Trumbower, and McNeer's 27 markers, Hampden- Sydney's record stood at 7-4. By far the best performance of the season was against Frederick at Death Valley, The Tigers romped to a 48-32 halftime advantage to put the game virtually out of reach. McNeer and Soden led in scoring with 27 and 21 points while the vastly improved Trumbower had 18 points and 17 rebounds. Following a loss to a powerful Old Dominion team, the Tigers squeezed out a 75-72 decision over arch-rival Randolph-Macon. Three more vic- tories over Lynchburg, Shepard, and R.P.I. ran the record to a respectable 10-5. .... .. Once again disaster struck as the Tigers ab- sorbed a string of three defeats, before revenging the earlier loss to Roanoke with a 69-64 victory. Misfortune continued as Old Dominion, Frederick, and Bridgewater pinned losses on the Tigers to close out the regular season with a 13-11 record. A Macon loss to Roanoke enabled Hampden- Sydney to make the Mason-Dixon Tournament held at Catholic University. Paired against powerful Mt. St. Mary's, who won the northern division, the Tigers were given but little chance of pulling an upset. Employing a deliberate offense, the Tigers staggered the run-shoot attack of the Mounts and carried an unbelievable 38-25 lead to the locker room at the half. The second half was a different story as the talented Fred Carter, an All Mason-Dixon performer, lead the Mounts' comeback. The final verdict was 74-68 as Trum- bower's 24 points and 14 rebounds were not enough. The loss to Mt. St. Mary's closed out' the brilliant career of Co-captain Soden. The 6'2 , 195 lb. Richmond native ended his final varsity season with a 18.5 scoring average, a truly re- markable feat in itself. Soden, often playing against opponents as much as eight inches taller, used his quickness and agility to outmaneuver practically every defender pitted against him. Con- sidering the condition of his battered legs through- out the entire season, Soden's mere presence on the court deserved respect and admiration by all. 117 First Row: Cris Zeno, Cris Henderson, Sam Purviance. Teams are fielded by each of the nine fraternities and the independent association. Trophies are awarded to the winners of the football, bas- ketball, and baseball leagues, and the team which accumu- lates the most points during the year wins the intramural cup. On the field there exists great rivalry, and the ma- jority of games are hard fought, but after retuming to the comforts of the house and a beer, ill feelings are usually short lived. - .. ,, V' .
