Mentor Fulton scored several pluses as he opened the season against the al- ways-tough Guilford College Quakers. His defense was one of Hampden-Syd- ney's strongest. Co-captains Jim Null and Rod Goggin led this unit which al- lowed only l7l yards per game in total offense during the year. Null, along with tackle Ray Dodson, end Jim Mackey CNO, he didn't play for the Colts on Sun- daysj, halfback Russ Palmore, made the All Mason-Dixon Squad. These men played well against heavily-favored Guil- ford. They stopped the Quakers again and again, and the margin of victory turned out to be a 55-yard punt return in the third quarter. The offense made it to the one foot line, but Guilford's All American linebacker, Ronnie Winslow, robbed the Tigers of a tie and possible victory. Halfback Phil Rome estab- lished himself as one of the most-feared runners in the conference. During the season Rome ran 946 yards to become one of the top 20 rushers in Small Col- lege Football in the country. Continuing his fine pass-catching, wingback Jim Lee earned All Mason-Dixon honors and broke his own pass-reception record. He hauled in 45 passes for 564 yards. The third game of the season was played in 6 inches of mud as the Ti- gers journeyed to Washington and Lee. The team took an early lead on a 27 yard field goal by freshman booter Don Wingfield. W8LL tied the contest in the third quarter and nearly pulled the game out in the last few seconds when a field goal attempt bounced off the uprights. The next three weeks were the most rewarding for the Tigers. They ran their record to 4-1-1 as they defeated Bridge- water 26-6, Western Maryland 14-0, and Johns Hopkins 28-0. Deke Summers, who had played behind Whitey Lipscomb for 3 years established himself as the Ti- ger's number one signal caller. Bryce Jewett was opening up holes for Rome and once again proved himself an All Mason-Dixon performer. Prospects looked good for coach Ful- ton, but, as last year, his team hit a mid- season slump. Against a strong Emory and Henry team, the Tigers came to the end of their winning streak. Leading with only three minutes to go the Tigers had a pass intercepted and a run-back for a touchdown resulted in an Emory and Henry victory. Down, after the E8LH game, the Tigers were upset by Frederick 17-7. Rome was hurt in the game and did not regain his form until the season's final game against Randolph-Macon. The following week the team was treated to a plane ride and a chance to run against the number one small college defensive team in the nation. After a bad first half, they found themselves down 18-0 and were never able to get back in the ball game. Final score: Centre 18, HS-C 14. Neandertha1,' John Mack hooks a Macon end. Q The Tigers' unsung hero, Coach Bill Pegram. Sugar Bear Bryce Jewett is all wet. .a al, -, Co-Captain, Rod Goggin, rushes an Emory 8: Henry pass. With a disappointing 4-4-1 record the Tigers met arch-rival Randolph-Macon, 7-0-l, in the season's final game. Ev- erybody was in for a surprise . . . right Yellow Jackets? The game did not go well until Russ Palmore picked off a Dave Wetzel pass and went 35 yards for a touchdown. The Yellow Jackets scored on a drive just before the half to tie 7-7. The second half started off poorly for the Tigers as they lost the ball on the kick-off because of a penalty. Then the Jackets scored to put the Tigers behind. Once, twice, thrice, the Tigers were inside the 5, but the Jackets stood firm. The Tigers tried once more as Summers hit Randy Edwards with a three-yard pass. This touchdown, coupled with a Macon safety compliments of Mike Vaughan and Rod Goggin, shot Macon's season and its Mason-Dixon Championship. What might have been a bad season was now one lined with gold, and every- one lived happily ever after. EK ,co '1- 4 .5-,. 1 . f'.v. V' 4 Q f . -M J., ' , A Q ,Y , ,i N I ka .!' V umrin - 1 In a closely matched game against Frederick College, the 1966-1967 Hampden- Sydney basketball season got under way on December 1, 1966. The Tigers won by one point, 93-92, as Denis Soden put the Tigers ahead with only nine seconds remaining in the game. Eddie Dyer and Soden, who had 23 points, with the help of Tom Lawrence, proved to be the stren-gth of the Tiger attack. The first home game of the season proved to be a disappointment for the Tigers as they lost to perennial conference power Mount St. Mary's, 83-71. Fred McNeer played a tremendous game as he poured in 27 points for Hampden- Sydney. The Tigers then began to roll as they posted winning scores over Lynchburg, Washington and Lee, R. P. I., Roanoke College, and Eastern Mennonite. At this point in the season, the Tigers had an impressive record of six wins and only one loss. The Christmas vacation proved to be a real vacation for the tall men from the Hill. Hampden-Sydney raced past Emory and Henry and Fort Eustis, 95-76 and 104-56 respectively, to play in the finals against Elizabeth City in the Fort Eustis Tournament. Again, Dyer and Soden proved to be the big guns for H-S, and with the aid of Jan Yarosz, this threesome placed the Tigers in the winners circle by beating Elizabeth City, 99-85. Jan Yarosz and Fred McNeer demonstrate that Basketball is a non-contact sport. 116 Eddie Dyer shows his All Mason-Dixon form. Jan Yarosz fires two for the Tigers. The sky then fell in on H-SC as they returned to regular season play. They lost their next four games in a row. It was not until the Tigers met Randolph- Macon that the situation brightened. The January 14 game was Hampden-Sydney's first win over Macon in the last seven games with them. The 56-55 victory proved to be the impetus for a sharp up- turn in spirit for the remainder of the season. The low score is indicative of the tremendous defensive battle which marked that game. The Tiger defense was led by guards Charlie Cobb and Don Robison as Dyer led the scoring with 23 points. The Tigers then posted victories over Lynchburg, 107-79, Eastern Mennonite, 121-76, and Shepherd College, 83-69. Dyer, Cobb, Robison, and Yarosz paced the Tigers through these wins. Hampden-Sydney again met Randolph- Macon and this time beat the Yellow Jackets 79-69. Soden and Robison led the defense as Dyer and Yarosz provided the offensive punch. The Tigers next defeated Washington College, 124-915 Bridgewater 85-77, and Roanoke College 96-90. Again, it was Cobb, Soden, Robison and Yarosz who held Hampden-Sydney together and gave them the boost that was need to win these games. Hampden-Sydney then lost to power- house Old Dominion 103-90. Exceptional shooting by Old Dominion proved to be too much for the Tigers, as O. D. hit 63'Z: of their shots. Soden had 28 points and ten rebounds in a line performance followed by Dyer with 20. The Hampden-Sydney Tigers iinished their regular s e a s o n schedule against Frederick College at Gammon Gym. Al- though the game had no signiiicance in the Mason-Dixon race, it was to decide the Virginia small college championship. Dyer, hitting from outside, and Soden, from inside, carried the load on offense, scoring 24 and 18 points respectively. Senior Co-captains Jim Rosenstock and Tom Lawrence, as well as Yarosz, bowed out in fine style in their last home game. Basketball S. Beach, F. McNeer, D. Soden, W. Parker, R. Hallman, J.
