President IAMES MURRAY HOOKER . , . . . .Vice-President DAVID MICHAEL MILBOURN . . .Secretary-Treasurer Student self-government has been a cherished tradi- tion and institution at Hampden-Sydney. The present con- stitution was adopted by the student body in 1963. Based largely upon past experience, it is designed to meet pres- ent and changing needs. Students take pride in their self- government and defend their rights against intervention by the administration of the College. The Student Assembly transacts all student body busi- ness, and, in the measure in which powers are delegated to it by the faculty, it has legislative jurisdiction over vari- ous phases of student campus life. The judicial power of the Student Government is vest- ed in the judiciary Board. This body tries cases arising from violations of Student Assembly regulations. . -rea. George Heilig watches as Webb jones signs Honor pledge card Student Council The Student Council by authorization of the Board of Trustees and of the faculty has jurisdiction over matters concerning breach of the Honor Code. The heart of the Honor System is individual responsibility. It assumes that every student is a gentleman and will conduct him- self in an honorable and upright manner in all phases of student lifeg it further assumes that every student is con- cerned with the strict observance of these principles for his own sake, for the sake of his fellow students, and for the sake of the college. A member of the Associated Collegiate Press, it is pub- lished on alternate Friday evenings during the school year by the students of Hampden-Sydney College from its offices located in NVinston Hall. The Tiger serves two purposes: to provide a medium for the distribution of information to H-SC students and to provide an outlet for student expression on the campus. The news staff seeks to collect and present accounts of past, present, and future events of interest to students, the feature staff attempts to present discussion of interesting and controversial issues, both on campus and beyond, and the sports staff provides an excellent summary of the fortunes of Death Valley's athletic teams. The season was the third consecutive winning season for Coach Fulton and his forces. The most notable victories were shutouts over XVashington 6: Lee, 21-0, and arch-rival Randolph-Macon, 20-0. A 41-25 win over Frederick marked the first Homecoming victory in several seasons. Other victims of the Tiger's winning ways were Guilford, Bridgewater, and NVestern Maryland. Five Tiger standouts were selected to the first team of the All Virginia Small College team, and two were awarded honorable mention. Seventy-five per cent of the starting Tiger backfield was named including quarterback VVhit- ey Lipscomb, wingback George Heilig, and running back Ty Tysinger. Lipscomb, a junior, was named captain of the team last year. Senior co-captain Heilig was placed at end on the first team last year. For Tysinger, a junior, it was his first time on the All State eleven. Recognized for their outstanding play in the line were senior tackle Sandy McLaughlin and end Herb Sebren. McLaughlin, a co- captain was awarded an honorable 'mention for his fine play last year. Iunior Sebren was named to the team for the first time. Honorable mentions went to big Rod Coggins for his play at guard and to linebacker jimmy Null for his out- standing achievement at that position. Once again this year the men from Death Valley dominated all star positions on the All Mason-Dixon Conference team. The only repeater from last year's squad was tackle Sandy McLaughlin. Others included Heilig, named to an end spot, and backs Lipscomb and Tysinger. Other individuals who tumed in superior performances over the course of the season were linemen Steve Helvin, Billy Edwards, and Bob Robertson. Stand- out performances in the backfield in addition to those already named included Kendall Whitaker, Archie Soucek, and Buster Lammay. Those freshman who deserve special recognition are halfback Phil Rome, guard Andy Leake and end john Mack. 85 S ' 3. -A-'- ,.. ,- , 4 if ..f'22'.R'r. ff 2,1 i' iff 4 . . g, . f 1 iii ll '- ' Su I I 'j 'J' ' ' 1 si. Q fx NSY Get out there and VVINV' Hampden-Sydney-16, Guilford-8 Death Valley, September 19 - The 1964 edition of the Hampden-Sydney Tiger football eleven entertained the Quakers of Guilford in the opening game of the season defeating them by a score of 16-8. The running of halfbacks Archie Soucek and Ty Tysinger combined with the accurate aerials of quarterback Whitey Lipscomb proved to be too much for a tough Guilford squad. The Tigers scored early in the first quarter on a 85-yard field goal by Ty- singer. Shortly thereafter the Quakers were forced into a punting situation from their own 41. The snap from center was faulty, causing the kicker to punt off balance. Lipscomb recovered the deflected kick on the Guilford 23 and raced into the end zone for the first Tiger touchdown. Tysinger's kick gave H-SC an early 10-0 advantage. Running-back Soucek provided the second and last six-point play for the Tigers on a 15-yard run around right end. The half ended with the score stand- ing at 16-0. The Death Valley men were plagued with offensive miscues throughout the second half and failed to score. The defense mad up for that by holding Guil- ford to a single touchdown, that coming late in the fourth quarter. Soucek was the workhorse of the day, picking up 77 yards in 26 carries. Tysinger had 63 yards in only six attempts. The new Hundley Stadium greets throng at the season's r Yi Q . '. ' Q' ' . kv ' l I ' A ' ' - -.1 V ,f b g b ., ,WWMEEFI 4 1 4 I , ,.-, . :,,-.. TT' . 1 . Halfback Kendall VVhitaker and Quarterback VVhitey Lipscomb tumed the decisive trick for the Tigers with Whitaker scoring from six yards out shortly before the half and Lipscomb mn- ning seven yards for one forth-quarter touchdown and passing to Bill Grant for another. It might have been a better day for the Eagles, who got a short-lived glimpse of pay dirt with Yager Marks' 83-yard runback on the opening kickoff, but that six points was all they were destined to have. VVhen Eagle Bob Baker was downed in the end zone for a Tiger safety in the second, the Hamp- den-Sydney attack was on for good. Archie Soucek, a senior mnningback, led the groxmd game again with 196 yards in 22 carries. With Lipscomb's passing for 183 yards and with the fine kicking of Ty Ty- singer the Tigers dominated the game. X Q N , Hampden-Sydney-6, Sewanee-28 Death Valley, October 3 - In the Tiger's third en- counter of the season they took on a tough pack of Purple Tigers from Sewanee fThe University of the Southl. The Sewanee squad shattered Hampden-Sydney's previously umblemished season 28-6. Although the Tiger offense could not get rolling during the first half, they managed to hold the Purple Tigers in check, allowing only a single touchdown. The running of 205 pound tailback Bill Johnson, combined with an alert pass defense proved to be the Tiger's undoing. johnson scored on touchdown runs of 26 and 59 yards and third quarters respectively. The only bright spot of the aftemoon came on a 74- yard punt return by quarterback Whitey Lipscomb, the play coming early in the fourth quarter. It proved to be the only scoring punch of the day for the outmanned Tigers. . The Tiger offense aerial-wise was good with Lipscomb accounting for 54 wards in nine tosses, while the altemate unit quarterback, sophomore George Summers, completed five passes for 40 yards. Halfback Kendall Whitaker was the leading ground gainer with 48 yards in ten carries, while running-back Ty Tysinger picked up 41 yards in ten tries with the pigskin. 'ivfvlf , Homecoming 1964 Hampden-Sydney-41, Frederick-2 5 Death Valley, October 10 - Bouncing back after their loss to Sewanee, the Tigers thrilled a Homecoming crowd of 5,000 by drubbing Frederick College 41-25. The win was the first witnessed by the old grads in four years. The Death Valley boys went to work in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Junior end Herb Sebren, blocking a punt on the Frederick 11, tumed it into a Tiger TD with 12:40 remaining. The Lions scored in the second quarter, only to have the All-State com- bination of quarterback Whitey Lipscomb and wingback George Heilig connect for a five-yard pass playgood for six points. Tysinger's kick was blocked, but the Tigers held a 13-6 halftime advantage. In an explosive third quarter 27 points were scored in eight minutes. Frederick began it with a 77-yard run, tying the score at 19-13. Not to be out- done H-SC's Lipscomb fired another scoring toss to Heilig, this one covering 48 yards. Frederick took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for still another score. Tiger halfback Kendall VVhitaker nearly matched that run with a 77-yard ramble in- to the Lion end zone. The score at this point read: H-S 27, Frederick 19. In the fourth stanza the Tigers tallied again, with sophomore Speedster XVhitaker scoring from five yards out. Tysinger added the last score of the day on a plunge from four yards out. George Heilig and Kendall VVhitaker each had perhaps their finest game of the season. VVhitaker carried the pigskin 20 times, grinding out 156 yards and 12 points, while Heilig caught five passes good for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Consequently, VVestem-Maryland lost its chance to clinch a Fourth Mason-Dixon Conference football title. The Creen Terrors opened the scoring in the first period after taking a Hampden-Sydney punt on their own 38-yard line. Quarter- back Rex Walker set up the scoring with a 46-yard run through the center, then scored on a one-yard plunge. A run for the two point conversion failed. The Tigers went ahead in the third quarter, scor- ing on a 40-yard drive after an exchange of punts. Quarterback Whitey Lipscomb threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Herb Sebren. Ty Tysingeris kick made it 7-6. Hampden-Sydney mounted another touchdown drive minutes later, marching 60-yards in ll plays. Lips- comb scored on a two-yard dive and Tysinger's kick made the score 14-6. Offensive standouts were Archie Soucek and Phil Rome. And on defense the Tiger center of the line did a good job. In a game billed as anything can hap- pen, Hampden-Sydney dumped the Generals 21-0. Early in the second quarter guard Denny Finger recovered a W 8: L fumble deep in General territory. It took but nine plays from W :Sz L's 30 to score, with quarterback Lipscomb doing the honors. The conversion was good and the Tigers roared to a 7-0 lead. Lipscomb scored again in the second quarter, this time from two yards out. Tysinger's kick gave H-S a 14-0 lead. The scoring drive began on the General 34, where freshman guard Andy Leake intercepted a pass. The Tiger defense held the gentleman Generals four yards short of a touchdown early in the third quarter. The key man in the final score of the day was sophomore quarterback George Summers. End Bobby Robertson recovered a fumble on the W Sz L four. Sum- mers bulled his way to paydirt from the two. The kick was good, and the Tigers had a commanding 21-0 lead. Linebackers jimmy Null and Denny Finger played an out- standing game defensively, as did freshman end john Mack. 95 Whitaker heckles Emory 61 Henry ball ca.rrier Soucek dives for extra yardage Hampden-Sydney-6, Emory 81 Henry-29 Petersburg, October 31 - Halloween can bring about an odd array of tricks and treats. In a game played at Petersburg's Cameron Field before a crowd of 2,000 Emory and Henry,s VVasps tricked the Tigers by a score of 29-6. In the opening minutes of play Hampden-Sydney recovered a Wasp fumble on the E :Sc H 44. A 38-yard pass play via the Lipscomb-to-Heilig route put the Tigers on the Emory and Henry six. From there it took quarterback Lipscomb two plays to reach paydirt. Tysinger's kick failed and the Tigers charged to a 6-0 lead. On the first play from scrimmage following the Tiger TD, Wasp Bobby Magill swept around end for an 88-yard touchdown run. With the kick going wide the score was tied at six points each. A field goal and two Emory and Henry touchdowns later the half ended with H-SC on the short end of a 16-6 score. The second half saw a spirited Tiger drive midway in the third quarter, but it fizzled on the E Sr H 29. The Death Valley boys failed to sustain a scoring drive after that. Ends Billy Edwards and Herb Sebren both played an outstanding gameg Edwards on defense, Sebren on offense. Wingback George Heilig played his usual fine game until he was injured early in the second quarter. ,-6. fb vivo Soucek is stung from behind by a Wasp 96 viwwl 5 l! Millersville needed 14 plays to go 76 yards in the second quar- ter for a 6-0 lead. Haine scored on a 15-yard run. An 18-yard runhack of a punt to the Tiger 22 put the Maraud- ers in position to score again. Another long run was halted at the H-S one-yard line, where the Tigers held on four consecutive downs. After the second half kickoff the Bengals drove 66 yards in 13 plays to chalk up their first and what proved to be their last score of the game. junior halfhack Travis Tysinger picked up 52 of the 66 yards, scoring from one-yard out. Tysingers gick sailed through the uprights, giving Hampden-Sydney a 7-6 advantage. But the lead lasted only long enough for Millersville to get the ball after the ensuing kickoff and move 6-1 yards in 10 plays with Porter going the last seven yards for the TD. That ended the scoring for the aftemoon, as Hampden-Sydney lost its third decision of the season 12-7. Tysinger picked up 114 yards in 25 carries and punted for a 43.4-yard average. The Tigers had to play the game without the services of sophomore halfback Kendall XVhitaker and senior wing- back George Heilig. VVhere are my blockers? 1 X . sf N 97 Hampden-Sydney-0, Centre-9 Danville, November 14 - Centre finished its football season on a high note, defeating the Hampden-Sydney Tigers 9-0. Two of the Colonel's freshman, Ben Boone and joe LaMonica, set up a first quarter fieldgoal for Centre, pushing the ball back to Hampden-Sydney's 15- yard line after an interception by Boone. Centre scored its only touchdown early in the second quarter, following a 57-yard quick-kick. Hampden-Sydney was unable to kick out of danger and Centre moved the ball on in for the score. Hampden-Sydney got within the 14-yard line four times but were unable to push it across. The last threat to the Colonels came late in the fourth quarter when they lost the ball on downs and Hampden-Sydney took over. Phil Rome and Archie Soucek again had a good show- ing for themselves. Hampden-Sydney's defense had to prove its worth continually during the afternoon with jimmy Null and Ken Hyde backing up the line. On sev- eral occasions the Tigers moved the ball well but lost the ball on downs. This game disgusted the Tigers so that when they hit the Yellow Iackets the following week there was little contest involved. Tysinger's toe brings home one more point li' ning ' . G. Hampden-Sydney-20, Randolph-Macon-0 Death Valley, November 21 - Hampden-Sydney's Tigers wound up their 1964 gridiron season by walloping arch-rival Randolph-Macon 20-0. The Tiger defense was brilliant, but the offense had a dif- ficult time coming up with a combination which would lead to pay-dirt. The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock. 'With renewed enthusiasm, the Tigers took the field in the third quarter to score with 5:30 remaining on the clock. The first scoring drive began on the jacket 38. Tysinger ripped the line for 24 yards, freshman Phil Rome roamed for two, while quar- terback Lipscomb accounted for the remaining yards, sneaking the ball over from the one. Tysinger toed the pigskin for the PAT and H-S lead 7-0, much to the delight of 3,000 chilled, but happy fans. The Bengals carried their 7-0 score into the fourth quarter. A fumble recovery by end Herb Sebren at midfield started the second touchdown drive. jimmy Null, a sophomore, powered his way to paydirt from five yards out. WVith 8:22 remaining in the fourth canto the final TD of the game was scored on the most perfectly executed play of the aftemoon. Lipscomb heaved a 47-yard pass to George Heilig who got behind the jacket defenders down the middle. Heilig's touchdown pass reception brought his season's total to 31 - a new Tiger record for pass receptions in one season. .-n U Q 'll x n R Keeping it in the family as brothers-in-law Billy Edwards p and Iimmy Null converge on i helpless Yellow jacket 99 Lipscomb has plenty of time to get this one away Co-Captains Dave Trickler and Steve Snyder Basketball The 1964-65 Hampden-Sydney College basketball squad experienced one of the finest seasons achieved in the basketball history of the school. Under head coach Bill Pegram, and led by co-captains Steve Snyder and Dave Trickler, the Tiger basketballers were billed as the team to beat on the small-college basketball front in Virginia. Even though the team did not accomplish what it set out to do, win the Mason-Dixon Conference championship, they posted an admirable 17-8 record for the season. After losing their first game, a closely contested en- counter with Southern Conference power, William and Mary, 94-70, the Tigers clawed their way through six of the next seven opponents, scoring over 100 points in each game. Ed VVhitthoefft and Denis Soden led the Tigers to their first home victory of the year over W'6zL, 118-84. Travelling to Lynchburg, the Hampden-Sydney hoop- sters proved they could be as devastating away as at home. High-scoring Thom Quarles led the team effort in a 108- 70 victory. Returning home for a weekend stand, the Bengals stopped Newport News Apprentice and Richmond Pro- fessional Institute by 126-58 and 127-73 margins respectvely. - x Seated: Perkins, Soden, Parker, Richardson,1Triclder,NYitt. . hoefft, R., Glaser, Beach, Standing: Booth, .R2it51'I'i2'1I'l1lA, . Hampden-Sydney's baskeball fortunes were in full bloom at the beginning of the Christmas recess. As the season resumed after Christmas, however, a blight set in on the Tigers' cage endeavors, as they lost three of the next four contests. Despite Quarles' 18 point effort the team came out on the short end of a 74-64 score at the Phiblant Tourna- ment in Norfolk. The only consolation at the tournament was the Bengals' continued mastery over Lynchburg Col- lege. Steve Snyder was high scorer with 15 points in a 110-67 victory. In a tournament at Spindale, North Carolina, the H-SC hoopsters' fortunes resulted in the longest losing streak of the season. Appalachian State and Pfieffer tamed the Tigers 76-66 and 89-73. Thom Quarles threw in 21 points in a losing cause in the first game, while co-captain Dave Trickler netted 20 points in the latter contest. Returning to the confines of the state small-college scene, the Tigers resumed their winning ways at the expense of Newport News Apprentice by a score of 113- 61 and Bridgewater by the close margin of 79-76. The Tigers' old nemesis, the Yellow Jackets of R-MC, won a decisive victory at Ashland 103-78, but the Tigers bounced back to defeat Old Dominion 79-75. Invading the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Tigers were stunned by the Cavaliers of U. Va. 106-73. Steve Snyder displayed his talents by scoring 20 points in a 96-78 victory over Roanoke College. The Bengals tripped by Lynchburg for the third time by a 105-63 margin. Quarles was again high scorer with 24 points. The Tigers then entertained the Northern Division of the Mason-Dixon Conference in a not too host-like manner. Washington College was trounced 107-79, and Mount St. Mary's was stunned by a 105-82 margin. Play- ing perhaps their finest game of the season, the Bengals scored over 100 points for the tenth time. Seeking revenge over R-MC, the Tigers fought hard in a game that went into an overtime. VVhen the dust finally settled, however, the Death Valley Boys found themselves on the short end of a 93-91 score. Quarles played brilliantly, scoring 31 points. Coach Pegram and his squad moved to the road for the remaining 4 games of the season. They were victorious each time, defeating Old Dominion, Bridge- water, Roanoke, and R.P.I., thus completing their finest season in five years. The Tigers took their 17 and 7 record to the Mason- Dixon Conference Tournament, but bowed out in the first round to Catholic University 97-77 despite a 19 point scoring effort by Freshman Denis Soden.
