CHARLES FERGUSON MCRAE For his many years of service ro Hampden-Sydney College, ro his fellow man, and to God, the Staff of the 1964 KALEIDOSCOPE proudly declicates this book to Dr. Charles Ferguson McRae. ghil The 1964 KALEIDOSCOPE presents a picture of Hampden-Sydney College, past and present, its purpose. its living traditions, and its life. In our short time here the college has come to mean a great deal to us all. Here we have learned, not only how to make a living, but also how to live. We hope that this book may preserve some of the real meaning of Hampden-Sydney so that in the future as you scan its pages, you may recall your own experience here and realize the true value of your years spent on the hill. A member of the Associated Collegiate Press, it is published on alternate Friday evenings during the school year by the students of Hampden-Sydney College from its oflices located in Winston Hall. The Tiger serves two purposes: to provide a me- dium for the distribution of information to H-S C stu- dents and to provide an outlet for student expression on the campus. The news staff seeks to collect anl present accounts of past, present, and future events of interest to studentsg the feature staff attempts to present discussion of interesting and controversial issues, both on campus and beyondg and the sports staff provides an excellent summary of the fortunes of H-S C's athletic teams. With a line rec- ord of 12 wins against 5 defeats, the tennis team won the Southern Division Championship of the Mason-Dixon Conference and iinished second to Loyola of Baltimore in the championship match. One of these losses was to a non-collegiate team, ie., the powerful Army team from Fort Eustis in Hampton, Virginia. Through the past two sea- sons, the tennis team has lost only two collegiate matches as against having won 25 matches. The top six men were composed of Pete Hatch- er, George Heilig, Buddy Saunders. Bing Gentry, Grayson Boyce and jim Patton. There were two important wins that are re- membered as highlights of the season. The hrst came in the early part of the season when the team scored an exciting 5-ii victory over highly regarded Washington and Lee University. The second highlight and our most important confer- ence victory was a 6-3 victory over Randolph- Macon in early May which avenged a loss to them the week before. This gave us the Southern Division Championship and sent us to the cham- pionship match against Loyola. K J 4-uv XJ Lefl Io Right-McXVilliams, Fuller I TR MURAL WW: have been very fortunate here at Hampden- Sydney to have had an active intramural system, providing athletic competition for those not wishing to take part in our varsity program. The system is composed of the eight social fraternities competing in eight sports for the intramural cup, which is awarded to that group with the greatest number of points at the end of the year. The sports are divided into two groups, touch football, A-League basket- ball, and softball being the major sports, while B-League basketball, ping-pong, pool. horseshoes, and volleyball are the minor sports. David Fuller is this years Intramural Manager. It is his task to schedule all games. tabulate the points. and provide jersies and equipment. In football the Kappa Sigs went undefeated to take the crown. Second place was won by the Pikas, and third place was a tie between the Kappa Alphas and the Chi Phis. In A-League basketball, the Theta Chis took the cham- pionship, beating the Pikas in a playoff game. The Pikas took second place, and third place went to the Kappa Sigs.
