Our limitations have been the many aspects of campus life that cannot be preserved by such means. We have tried. there! fore, to present the more permanent aspects, and we hope that this Yearbook will be accepted and enjoyed by both the students and administration, who share a common life on the Hill. If, many years from now, in looking through this Yearbook, you can recall old friends and pleasant memo- ries of your college years, then we can consider this publica- tion a success. P rp . Lllj T IN llqf' Q DS' 1 7 56 ' 'f 22? ii Returning uppei5l?g nd incoming freshmen in September, 1961, found the new 4 , 00.00 joseph D. Eggleston Library open and ready for use. It was formally dedicated at Homecoming exercises on October 28 with the Honorable Colgate W. Darden, jr. delivering the address. Since that time, in increasing numbers, students have found the new building to be a convenient and com- fortable place to study. Seating space is available for 232 readers, and the book stacks will accommodate 100,000 volumes. ! x'.-J 4-I YW?- i i I i l tl 2 v , f. 1' - 5 f 'H Ik .-g---xf.'. -27 12f'?'ff' p ,A.. Founded in 1800, the literary magazine was established to offer to students of literary ability an opportunity to express themselves through poetry, essays, and short stories. The magazine affords the only medium on the campus for such creative writing. In conjunction with Sigma Upsilon Literary Fraternity, the magazine staH this year sponsored a literary contest for the May issue of the maga- zine. Entries were broken down into three cate- gories: Fiction, non-Fiction, and Poetry. Three cash prizes were awarded in each category. The poem on the opposite page was one of the entries which we consider appropriate for publication in this yearbook. Hampden-Sydney Magazine TO TREAT THE POOR THINGS SO Why is it that with ev'ry class the students mood must change? How just is it that he endure professors odd and strange? Impersonal precision and machine-like quality- Prerequisites for doing well in freshman chemistry. Labs and lectures hurry on with unimpeded haste, The student finds that all his work is nothing but fl Waste. On halogens, electrolytes, convertability, He studies long without repose or sweet tran- quility. The bustling little teacher-calm, aloof, serene- Can almost hold communion with the salts of iodine. In English he must always be alert and open- minded. It's imperative that he not be by faulty logic blinded. The professor stresses constantly the many rules of writing, Slanting is a cardinal sin for one should not be slighting. Forceful sentences, he says, are builders of success, And he should know, just look at his own calm contentedness. He sternly warns the cringing class that it will cost them dear To dare ignore the clever rules to which one should adhere. But even if your speech is crude and filled with harsh invective, He'll gladly sanction anything as long as it's effective. As if he had not suffered much, or had much to endure, He then must go to calculus, quite useless and obscure. The confused class alas does sit an unenlightened throng, The enthralled teacher integrates so merrily along. With mid-point rules, half-angle forms, and other sleights-of-hand, .af .4 115 le He still can't seem to show it so the class will understand. Differentials, integrals, come flying wave on waveg And senseless to his class's mood, the student on and on does rave. To ancients next the student Hies to read Lingua Latina, With Ovid weaving pretty tales of Cupid and Corinna. The world of old throws wide its arms with men and deeds quite notable, And the restless moderns fret and thirst for some- thing a bit more potable. The instructor mildly notes and marks the gerunds, verbs, and dativesg While harassed students frown and try to read the tongue like natives. The class, bewildered, struggles on with languid lethargy, Begrudging the professor that which he alone can see. Wfith Bible last the mood must change, and all should be quite sober. Creation and original sin must be finished by October. The professor, god-like, condescends to show to one and all The futile frailty of life on this terrestr'al ball. How disillusioning it seems When, day on dreary day, Miracles-the hope of youth--are all explained away. There are many likely answers to a question on a quiz, But of all interpretations, you had better put down his, But one must thank him also for a favor quite prodigious, Because he could decide to make the atmosphere religious. At the closing of the academic year in 1961, Hampden-Sydney lost one of the most capable men ever to serve the College-Dr, Ben Lacy. In 1926, Dr. Lacy received the summons to serve God and his fellow man as the President of the Union Theological Seminary, from which he had graduated twelve years earlier. From 1926 to 1956 he devotedly held this post. When the mandatory retirement age arrived, Dr. Lacy was still active and was not ready to give up full-time Christian service. At this time he entered into his service at Hampden-Sydney. Dr. Lacy arrived on the Hill on February 1, 1956, and served five memorable years as Chaplain for Hampden-Sydney College as well as Pastor for Col- -1! all 3 lege Church. During this time many men of the Hill had the privilege of knowing and working with him. The students who worked with Dr, him as a spry individual with a quick Lacy knew and cheery greeting and a phenomenal memory for names. He was always ready to discuss problems, as well as other matters, with the students. On behalf of the Student Body, the Student Chris- tian Association would like to dedicate this page to Dr. Benjamin Rice Lacy, jr, with sincere apprecia- tion for his generous and devoted service to Hamp- den-Sydney College. 1-L I. kaleidoscope sports 'i' A.. .. .-A..,F 7.7 A--F ,,,. , , .i ,5 12 4 ?1'1l'5s ? , Y L? The Tiger eleven took the lead midway in the first period by climaxing a 66-yard march that featured a 3-i-yard jaunt by halfback Lewis Ever- SIIG, with a ' yard pass play from quarterback Stuart Shelton to end Bobby Saylor, who was all alone in the end zone. The following play turned out to be the difference between a stand-off and a defeat. A XV. 8: L. tackle slipped through the Tiger defense and blocked Fred Mitchell's extra point try. The Generals failed to score until late in the third period, when they ended a 64 yard push with a 2-yard plunge off-tackle for the score. This was followed by the successful try for the extra point, which turned out to be the deciding factor of the game. Three plays later, the Generals recovered a Tiger fumble on the H.-SC 13 yard line. How- ever, the Generals' efforts to score were thwarted by the Hampden-Sydney recovery of a W. ck L bobble on the 2-yard line, Unfortunately for the Tigers, the W. Sc' L abundance of manpower began to take its toll on the Tiger team during the second half. The Tigers, lacking in depth, could not cope with the defensive units of Washington and Lee ani only once did the Tigers penetrate the enemy territory during the second half. Hampden-Sydney standouts in the game were Bobby Saylor, Ken Pritchett, and George Perkins. who were all especially effective on defense. Tredway picks up yardage. SEPTEMBER 30 - Hampden-Sydney's Bengals scored almost at will in overpowering an un- fortunate Bridgewater eleven in the first home encounter of the season. The win gave the Tigers their 17th straight decision over the Eagles. The Tigers scored on drives of 30, 67, 57, 81, 78, 51, 56, and 31 yards. All but one of the drives were completed on the ground. The only Bridgewater score came during the fourth period. Hampden-Sydney's First score came three plays after end Joey Viar had recovered an Eagle fum- ble on the opening kickoff. Lewis Everette gal- loped into the end zone with only one minute, ten seconds of the game gone. Two minutes later Fred Mitchell romped 50 yards for the second touchdown. The first half ended with the score- board reading 52-O, after Stewart Shelton, Tris Hyde, and Archie Soucek had each hit pay dirt. Of the live touchdowns of the first half, only two extra points were garnered. The Tigers roared back in the second half by posting their sixth, seventh, and eighth tallies of the game. Tom Tredway took the ball and sprinted 67 yards to make the score 58-0. The next score was posted by Lewis Everette, who slipped over the goal from the two yard line. The final tally came on a 19-yard pass from freshman quarterback George Reynolds to freshman back George Heilig. The conversion was successful and the game came to an end only after the Eagles completed a 67- yard drive with their only score of the game. The extrapoint was good and the score remained 51-7. The entire team did an excellent job and honors go to each member. Hyde completes pass for substantial gain. OCTOBER '-The Tigers of Hampden-Sydney traveled for the second time by air to meet the Purple Tigers of Sewanee. Unfortunately for the Hampden-Sydney squad, the powerful single-wing of the Purple Tigers scored 21 points to only 9 for the Death Valley team. During the early part of the game, neither team could make any headway. Then, near the end of the first period, the Bengals drove to the Sewanee li, where the offense faltered and Fred Mitchell put the Tigers ahead with a field goal. The Bengals began to dominate the game by the second quarter and drove to the Sewanee 19 where they lost the ball on downs. Sewanee took over and on a quick opener the Purple Tigers scored with an H1-yard run. The second half proved to be the Bengals' downfall. The two re- maining Sewanee scores came on passes, one in the third period and the other in the fourth. The only other Tiger score came on a quarterback sneak by Stuart Shelton which climaxed a drive of 'O yards with 6 first downs. The pass for the extra two points was deflected, and the game ended with the score Zl-9. Special note should be made of the tineidea fensive play of Otis Bradley, Ken Pritchett. George Perkins, and Tim Butler. Also to be included are Lewis Fverette. Tris Hyde, and Fred Mitchell. Fumble! The Tiger defense converges on the opposition, led by Birch Douglas. OCTOBER 14-The Green Terrors of Western Maryland slogged to an S-0 victory over the Hampden-Sydney Tigers at rain-soaked Death Valley to hand the Tigers their third defeat in four starts and avenge a 32-12 drubbing at the hands of the Tigers last year. The only score of the game came midway in the last period when the Western Maryland full- back Hobart l-:nifed through center from the 19 yard line. He also added the two-point conversion. The Tigers spent most of the game with their backs to the wall and only twice did they pose any serious threats, both of which came in the second half. However, neither Tiger drive pene- trated past the Western Maryland 50-yard line. The game was marred by 10 penalties, live against each team. Also, each team had its share of fumbles on the slippery held. As far as statistics were concerned, Hampden- Sydney was ahead in only one column, passing. The Tigers chalked up 27 yards passing to none for Western Maryland. The Terrors gained lS5 yards on the ground to 67 Yards for the Tigers. ln the penalty column, the Tigers were penalized 67 yards to 45 yards for the Terrors. The Bengals played a good game, considering that the Green Terrors were favored by 14 points. Top performers of the day for the Tigers were Lewis Everette, Otis Bradley. and Fred Mitchell. OCTOBER 21-Having a record for the season at one win against three losses, the Bengals of Hampden-Sydney traveled to Emory 8: Henry looking for their second win, but the hard-hitting Wasps were a little too much for them. During the course of the game, the Wasps chalked up 16 points. They scored on two touch- downs and a field goal. One of the extra points, however, was blocked. The Tigers made only 34 yards on the ground against the powerful Nwasps, but were able to press the attack by going to the air. Overall, 94 yards were gained by passing. Of these 94 yards gained through the air, Bobby Saylor and Kent Carter were responsible for over half with 32 yards and 30 yards, respectively. Smart Shelton threw for 61 of these 9-i yards, while freshman George Reynolds accounted for the other 33 yards. Fortunately, only one fumble wa lost by the Tigers, but there was a total of 55 yards of penalties inflicted upon the Tigers. Lewis Everette showed his usual Fine form in punting by having an average of 56.6 yards per punt. He punted 9 times for 529 yards. George Heilig punted only once, and that was good for 33 yards. Tiger standouts in the game were Mitchell, Everette, and Tredway. Bobby Saylor and Kent Carter did exceptionally well at end, and Shelton and Reynolds handled the quarterback positions very well. Olfensively, Ken Pritchett and George Perkins did excellent jobs. Hampden-Sydney squeezes out a hrst down YI V' . Viar hauls in a pass for a score. OCTOBER ZS-The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins put a damper on the Tiger Homecoming celebra- tion as a crowd of 4,000 watched them roll to an 18-8 victory over the home team. The Hrst period of the game ended in a dead- lock with neither team able to score. Each team tried to mount a scoring drive but was unable to do so. The longest drive of the period was made by the Tigers, who started at their own 3 and drove to the Blue jay 44, where they lost the ball on downs. Early in the second quarter, the Blue Jays drove from their 20 to tally the only score of the first half. The extra point attempt was blocked by the heads-up playing of Steve Helvin and Bobby Saylor. Twice again, the Tigers started drives of their own, but both ended in interceptions of Stuart Shelton's passing. The half ended with the Tigers behind by a score of 6-0. Midway during the third period, the Tigers began another drive from their 48, but once again their efiort was ended by an intercepted pass. The Jays took over and raised the score with a pass and a 30-yard TD run. Again the extra point attempt was blocked. The Tigers retaliated with a drive from their 43 to the Hopkins 32 but lost the ball on downs. The Blue Jays made their final score in the fourth quarter by way of another pass-run com- bination. Once more the extra point attempt was blocked. The Tigers' only score was set up when Sid Druen recovered a Blue Jay fumble on the Hopkins 22. A pass from George Reynolds to George Heilig put the Tigers on the Blue Jay 13 and from there Reynolds passed to Dickie Cralle for the score. Another pass to Ronnie jones made the final score 18-8. NOVEMBER 4-The Bengals of Hampden-Syd- ney traveled to Athens, West Virginia to meet, for the first time, the Mountain Lions of Concord College. The Mountain Lions turned out to be a powerful foe as they intercepted five passes and rolled up 223 yards rushing to defeat the visiting Tigers by 34-T. The initial quartet' was completely dominated by the Tigers. The Tigers took the ball on their 22 and drove to the Concord 4. With fourth down and less than a yard to go the Tigers failed to make a first down. The Lions took over, but the defensive unit of the Tigers kept them within their own 20 each time they had the ball during the first period. During the second period the situation was completely reversed. The Lions broke into the scoring column with two touchdowns. The first score came on a 48-yard drive. The second came soon after when Concord intercepted a Hampden- Sydney pass and moved to the Tiger 2, where fullback Wayrne Hicks drove over for the score. Both extra points were good, and the half ended with the score 14-O. The third quarter went scoreless with a Tiger drive being stopped on the Concord 5. The Tigers came back in the fourth quarter on another drive originating from their 47 and advanced to the Concord 25. From there the Tigers got their only score of the game on a pass from George Reynolds to Lewis Everette. Fred Mitchell added the extra point to make the score 1-i-7. The bottom fell out with two Concord interceptions of Tiger passes resulting in two additional touchdowns. The game ended with Hampden-Sydney in pos- session, the Final score being Concord 34, H-S C 7. Everette is pulled down from behind. Soucek and McSwain close on opposition. NOVEMBER 11-The Tigers broke their five- game losing streak by downing the Colonels from Centre College 37-S at Death Valley. The first half of the game was well played by the Tigers, but they had trouble in holding on to the ball. Four fumbles were lost, climaxing four Tiger drives. The lirst score came in the second period on a pass from George Reynolds to Bobby Saylor. The extra point try was no good, and the Tigers led 6-0. In 'the third period the Colonels took the kick- off on their 25, but two successive penalties put them on their 15. On the following play, an at- tempted pitch-out was intercepted by Dick Cralle who raced 20 yards for the second Tiger score. This time the extra point try by Mitchell was successful. The ball changed hands several times and then the Tigers took the ball from their 37 and ad- vanced to the Centre 2, where Lewis Everette in- tercepted a Centre pass on the 18. From that point, Lewis Everette tallied his second score of the day, and two extra points were added on a pass from Tredway to Dennis Dills. The Centre team got their only score on the longest drive of the game. Marching all the way from their 25 they scored on a pass from Harrin- gan to Hammond. Then Harringan added two points with an end run. The Tigers' last score came minutes later when Fred Mitchell heaved a tremendous 50-yard pass to end Kent Carter for the score. NOVEMBER lS-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers concluded their 1961 season by defeating the rival Yellow jackets of Randolph-Macon College by a score of l5-6 before a tremendous crowd at- tending the Acca Temple Shrine Bowl Game. This particular game has long been the most popular game of the football season. The first year these arch rivals met in the Acca Temple Shrine Bowl, the result was a 0-0 deadlock that was fought in an all-afternoon downpour. That year, a Randolph-Macon player was awarded a trophy for being the most valuable player of the game. The second year the contest was played. Randolph-Macon won the game by three points and for the second time had the most valuable player trophy awarded to a member of her team. This year. at the third Acca Temple Shrine Bowl, the tide was turned and Hampden-Sydney won both honors. The hard-fought contest ended in a 15-6 victory for the Tigers, and the Most Valu- able Player Award went to Fred Mitchell. who played an excellent ball game. From the time the game started, it was obvious that the Tigers were determined to get revenge for the loss of last year's game. The entire tirst half was dominated by the Tigers, who scored once in the lirst period. The Yellow Jackets pressed the attack late in the half, and they too came up with a score. However, the crisis passed when, during the second half, Bobby Saylor gathered in a long pass from Fred Mitchell to put the Tigers ahead by 15-6. Tiger standouts were Fred Mitchell, Bobby Saylor, and Lewis Everette. Saylor did very well at his end position by pulling in 2 passes for a total of 6' yards. Everette pulled in two passes for 18 yards, carried for ZS yards. and had a 36.2 yard punt average. Tredway roars in to complete tackle. ?iQi..l I 11111. . Isnaxwxm ' nr' 'surf . The Tigers. riding high on a wave of victory, extended their winning streak to 6 games by walking over the Medical College of Virginia, 111-62 and by soundly trouncing Roanoke by a score of 97-69. The tables were then turned when the Tigers visited Roanoke College and met with a 7-1-86 defeat. Arch-rival Randolph-Macon visited Hampden- Sydney on the third of February and went down to defeat for the second time against a powerful Tiger team. Bill Hardin and Dave Trickler ac- counted for 49 points of the SO-71 victory.. The Hampden-Sydney student body saw Hardin, Trickler, and Norwood Davis perform superbly against Bridgewater in a home game in which Bridgewater came out on the short end of a 100-92 score. Together, Hardin, Trickler, Rathmann shooting for two. and Davis poured in 70 points. Bill Hardin con- tinued to lead the state in scoring, as his average climbed to 26.6. Witli this average, he stood as the 19th highest scorer in the nation. At Lynchburg College, the Tigers went down to an 86-91 defeat. After the first nine minutes of play, the Tigers were ahead 24-4, but many fouls called on the Tigers gave the Hornets hope, and they came away victorious. Nevertheless, Bill Hardin turned in his usual superb performance with 27 points, while Captain Norwood Davis was second with 20. Once again in Gammon Gymnasium, the Tigers defeated Baltimore University by S5-70. Here also, Hardin and Davis were high scorers with 23 points and 20 points, respectively. On the tenth of February, Hampden-Sydney visited the Gentlemen at Lexington and de- feated them a second time by a score of 70-61. For the third straight game, Hardin and Davis were high scorers for the Tigers. Hardin chalked up 26 points, and Davis was close behind with 25 points. The third and final encounter with the Yellow jackets took place on the home court of a fired-up Lotz pumps in two under pressure. Davis adds two points to the score. Randolph-Macon team. The first half was evenly matched, but during the second half the jackets pulled steadily ahead to a 64-80 victory. Hamp- den-Sydney's high scorer, Bill Hardin, managed to tally 25 points, even though he was heavily guarded. The last two games of the season were played at home before partisan crowds. The Tigers pre- vailed in both cases with a 92-75 win over Johns Hopkins, and a 95-53 win over RPI. In the Johns Hopkins game, Bill Hardin chalked up 55 points, the most he has gotten in any game this year. He also was high scorer in the RPI game with 55 points. With the conclusion of the season. BILL PEGRAM Cmlrli The Hampden-Sydney Tigers completed their 1961 season with an over-all record of 9 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie. The League record was 6 wins to si losses, and the Little Eight record was 7 wins against 3 losses. The lirsr three games of the season were played on a road trip to Elon, Davidson, and Belmont Abbey. On this trip the Tigers lost by 7 to 6 to Elon, and by 9 to 1 to Belmont Abbey. The game with Davidson was played to an S to S tie. Then the Tigers played host to Rhode Island, Far- leigh-Dickinson. and twice to Elon. Of the four, the Tigers won only one, that being the Farleigh-Dickinson game by a score of 10 to 3. Hampden'Sydney dropped the Rhode Island game by S to 2 and both Elon games by 6 to 5 and 7 to ki. Again on a road trip, the Tigers split a pair of games between American University and Baltimore University. COACH BILLY FRANKLIN The 1961 track season was, to say the least, not one of the best seasons that the track team has seen in the past few years. Out of six scheduled meets, the Tiger track team posted six losses against no wins. The season began on March 2Sth with the Tigers matched against a strong Randolph-Macon team on their own tield. The final score was 6' for Randolph-Macon and 55 for Hampden-Sydney. The second outing.: for the team came in an uneven struggle against Roanoke College. the score being S4 to 53. On April 15th. the Hampden-Sydney Tigers met an- other strong team at Bridgewater College. The Eagles f i overcame the Tigers before a partisan crowd by a score of T6 to 46. The Tigers turned in their finest performance of the season against Lynchburg College at Death Valley, but lost the contest by 62 to 60. The last two meets turned out to be the worst ones of the entire season for the Tigers. On April 20th Washington and Lee trounced Hampden-Sydney by lll to 29. Then, the Tigers fell to Norfolk Division of William and Mary by IOS to 14. The Tigers who won their first letter in track were Buddy Koch, John Parrott, Buck Overby, Chip Smith, Fred Hudgins and Bobby Waters. ll 5- .41 BILL CAPERTON Cnpiain Carter Zerbe gets off to a good start.
