There have been moments of agony and much anguishg there have been times when it looked as if it would not make itg and there have been times when all went well, although not very frequently. However, throughout its development the chief goal has been to Create that which would be pleasing to you, the students of Hampden-Sydney, both now and in the years to come. Senior As the time comes for our class of 1961 to leave Hampden-Sydney, we are filled with mixed emotions --joy to be finished with another phase of our life, eagerness to start the new stage, and nostalgic re- membrances of our happy days on campus. We felt much the same way that day four years ago when we first became Hampden-Sydney gentlemen. It was an exciting day and a confusing one. Regis- tration, introduction to faculty and administration, the initiation to so many new friends, and the abandonment within those four bare walls that were to be our home for the next nine monthsg occupied most of that first hectic day. It was a fitting prelude to the busy days of meetings and tests that followed Next came the indoctrination period conducted by the Sophomores. Rat hats, signs, sound-off and Keep off the grass became familiar words to us. Rat races and the resulting visits to Dr. Moore soon cut down the number of rats indulging in the sport to twenty-eight. We will always remember the humility of those baby bottles. As the months passed and exams approached, many experienced for the first time a disastrous lack of knowledge. We will always remember Dr. johnson who helped so many of us through Chemistry 101. Will any of us ever forget Bill, the Magician who put on a four hour show in Stagger In. Glee Club, Fraternities, Editorials, Football, Basket- ball, Literary Groups-all these organizations helped make us feel that we were becoming more and more a part of Hampden-Sydney. After a restful summer we again returned to the Hill and were immediately aware of the absence of many of our fellow classmates. Wfork soon overtook us, and we gained the important job of controlling the new arrivals on campus, the class of 1962. They were a spirited class, initiating the blockade system, but under the leadership of the sophomore president, Buddy Babb, such obstacles were overcome by break- ing through the ceiling. During our reign as sophomores those with guilty consciences reacted frightfully to the appearance of eff 30 pa Charlie the Devil Sears, and many night lights were left burning after his visits. Also one morning there was evidence that a Giant had visited fraternity row, and that someone had painted the Deans windows red. We now managed to find more time to travel the well-beaten path to Longwood and the local Farm- ville hangouts. Wfith the coming of Spring books were neglected for frequent trips to the quarry for a cool dip and the picnics on Lee's mountain. Near the close of our decision of each sophomore year came the difficult choosing his major, our class being the first directly affected by this system. This was a turning point in our lives, many changing from pre-med and law. The migration to a B.A. curriculum was extensive! By our junior Year our group had thinned out considerably and we were now between the su- preme and the gross , Cushing Hall continued to be the setting for snowball battles, with the resulting damage, and bombardment by water bags. The sudden appearance of a statue in Morton Hall re- mained a mystery to most, but his presence was very Class evident until our return from Spring vacation. A Renault made a brief appearance in Morton on an- other occasion. Wfill we ever be able to forget the lovely weather we had for Homecomings and Mid- Wfinters: Homecoming festivities were dampened by a surplus of rain and Mid-Winters occurred during our month of snow, leaving many cars stuck in ditches and other places. With the Spring elections our leaders for the com- ing year were choosen-Dan McKeel president, Bob Moore vice-president, Bob Stump secretary, and Billy Williams historian. Lewis Bridgeforth was elected President of the Student Body and Bob Ewald was elected President of Student Christian Association, by majority vote. Also in the Spring we learned, after the circulation of many rumors, that Dr. Robert would be leaving us for a European Fellowship. No .1 Histor immediate president was named for the coming year, and soon we left school for the summer vacation. Now came the time for many of us to be counting hours and quality points in hope of graduating. Time rolled on and every activity was becoming more meaningful. Homecomings was exciting as usual and the seniors were more conscious of the festivities. Many seniors took advantage of the frequent inter- views offered with high hopes of finding a promising job for the future. Others were planning their stay in the armed services. With the nearing of june came the realization that all work would soon come to an end and we would leave our position as students to assume our re- sponsible places as alumni. We hope that with all that has been given us by the school, we can at least leave some impression and lasting influence behind us as we go out to face the world as responsible citizens, having been enriched by the Hampden- Sydney tradition. Now is the time for us to look back at the past four years. and see everything in its proper perspec- tive. We entered at a period when Hampden-Sydney was changing and many old traditions were making room for new ideas. The introduction of College Boards as an entrance requirement, initiated with us, is a continued pre-requisite. The major system as introduced by the faculty was put into its own right. We saw the termination of Dr. Roberts presidency and the coming of Dr. Gilmer, a Hamp- den-Sydney man himself. as his successor. Many new faculty members have been introduced on the Hill, and we have regretfully seen many established men leave for new positions or for the chance to further develop their education. At the close we are confronted with the news that another change is coming in, that of the Semester System as opposed to the Session System. The most important and lasting impression of our stay as students cannot be expressed in words, but is found existing in all Hampden'Sydney gentlemen, only being understood by fellow graduates or stu- dents of Hampden-Sydney. True, in graduating from college you have reached a milestone in your life and have attained a goal for which you have striven for years, You have my most sincere congratu- lations, but never think oi this accomplishment as an end in itself. Speaking as one of your teachers, and 1 believe l speak io: all, my hope is that we have instilled into each oi you this desire to learn. li this remains a dominant force in your life long after you have forgotten Newton's Second Law, then Hampden-Sydney College has succeeded in one oi her main objectives. As you leave the hill as students and join the ranks of the alumni, you are not a finished product. Hay you never so consider yourseli. When a man reaches that state oi mind, then he is indeed iinished. Ranember the words oi the psalmist, So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. You leave these familiar surroundings with our blessing. vie bid you farewell as students, but welcome you most heartily as alumni. ycerely, L mas E. '92 The 1961 Tigers Wlien one looks at a teams won-lost record they either get a favorable or unfavorable impression of the team. The won-lost record, however, does not always tell the true story of the squad. This record of the 1960 football Tigers does not come close to giving the real picture of this seasons gridmen. The Garnet and Gray this year did not have a very favorable won-lost record, but their total seasonal figures show that they out-played their opponents in every aspect except the score column. This years captain, veteran halfback Charlie Sears, turned in a commendable performance in leading his squad. Charlie, although injured early in the season, Came back by the Wfestern Maryland game to continue on the field the inspiring job he had done from the sidelines. RICHARD BURRELI. Alblelic Dirertor Director and Coaches This year there was a complete turn-over in the Tiger athletic department. Heading the new staff was athletic director Richard Burrell. This was his first year at this position, having come to Hampdey-Sydney from Wood- berry Forest School in Orange, Virginia. He served also as assistant football coach and brought with him an out- standing record as a high school football mentor. Pre- ceding his five very successful years at Orange High , he had piled up a very commendable record at Highland Springs High School where his teams won 50 of 75 games. He is an alumnus of Hampden-Sydney C385 and while a student here he starred in football, basketball, and base- ball. Stepping into the place of head football coach this year was a man. familiar to everyone on the Hill . Stokeley Fulton, having been line coach of the Tiger squad since The third member of the new athletic department staff is Bill Pegram, Jr. Coming to Hampden- Sydney from Hopewell High School where he too had a very fine coach- ing record, he was named head coach of the Tiger cagers and served as an assistant football coach. Completing the new four mem- ber staff is Billy Franklin. Bill served as Jayvee basketball coach and assistant in football. He also took over the position vacated by Mont Linkenauger as trainer and pilot of the Bengal track team. These men have done a grand job the first year in their positions, and we know that through their continued effort Hampden-Sydney will continue to produce champion- ship teams. 1957, moved up to take over from Bob Thalman, who went on to UNC. Stokeley's first year at guiding his team from the num- ber one coach's spot was not too happy a one for him record-wise, but what his team lacked in experience, they made up for in desire and spirit and the fine sportsman- ship which is so characteristic of all H-S teams. Stokeley himself is an all-time Tiger great, having been picked on the first team Little All-America squad his senior year f'55D, and having captained the school's baseball team that year also. When the Tigers included wrestling in their athletic roster last year, Stokeley became head coach of that sport. He has done a fine job with his mat-men during the first two seasons. The H-S eleven took an early 6-O lead, but were unable to hold the edge and EXH led at the half. 7-6. The Wfasps scored again in the third quarter and, despite the determined effort of the Big Red, held on to the lead to take the decision. Hampden-Sydney, hurt by penalties and some costly fumbles, was unable to score again after their original tally. Credit must be given to the Tiger second unit. led by sophomore quarterback Stuart Shelton. Defensive honors went to end Bob Saylor and halfback Tris Hyde. Bengals Over Bridgewater, 48-O October l-Making a comeback from their one- touchdown defeat of the previous week, the Garnet and Gray soundly trounced an upset-minded Bridge- water eleven. Thanks to the heads-up play of guard Dave Holman who recovered a fumble on the Eagle 54, the Tigers in six plays were able to score and took the lead, 7-0. There was no more scoring in the first half due to the determined defensive play of both teams. Wfhen the second half opened there was no doubt as to which the winning team would be. The Bengals stopped the Bridgewater offense and then turned on the steam, scoring six more TD's before the final gun. Laurels went to Fred Mitchell who kicked 6 of 7 extra points. Bengals Blast Western Maryland, 52-12 October 15-The H-S eleven evened their season record at 2-2 by upsetting Western Maryland in the opponents' annual Parents' Day game. Although the Green Terrors broke the ice and scored first in the opening period, the Tigers bounced back and took an 18-6 lead by half-time. The Red'nlGray scored again in the third quarter, and allowed West- ern Maryland only one more touchdown before they finally capped off the decision in the final period with a Ferrell to Saylor pass. Co-captain Charlie Sears overcame his early season injuries and led the individual rushing with 66 yards. Stuart Shelton deserves praise for his job at quarterback. After stopping one offensive threat the Tigers yielded the game-winning TD and the contest ended with the Generals ahead 14-7. Tom Tredway and Bill Sale played an excellent game, with Sale going the full 60 minutes. H-S Falls Short As Franklin and Marshall kwin, 21-20 November 5-The Tiger gridmen traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for their sixth game of the 1960 season. Hampden-Sydney, playing for a win rather than a tie, tried for a two point conversion in the closing minutes of the game, but was unable to break through the FXW line. Although the team lost the game by one point. they should be congratu- lated for their spirit and desire to win as was evi- denced by the try for two points. This spirit showed itself throughout the year and the team should be justly proud of themselves even though they did not have a winning season. 4: I 1 I I I I I I I I 1 I I I George McVey, Centerg Art Matney, Tackleg Scotty Simms, End: Neil Yeargin, End. Garnet and Gray Shut Out By Centre, 10-0 November 12-The Tigers' only scorless game of the 1960 season came at the hands of the Colonels of Centre College. Although the H-S squad came within a few yards of pay dirt a number of times, they were unable to capitalize on their drives. A determined Centre defense combined with bull's-eye accurate passing proceeded to halt the Bengals time after time. The Colonels could not score in the first two quarters, but came back in the final half with a TD and a field goal. A number of Tiger players performed outstandingly, in particular, backs Ever- ette, Sears, Treadway, and Mitchell, tackle Tim But- ler, and linebacker Otis Bradley. Tigers End Season With Loss To Randolph-Macon, 10-7 November 19-City Stadium in Richmond was the scene of the closing game for the Tiger squad. The Tigers scored the first touchdown of the game and their last of the 1960 season on an electrifying Everette pass early in the game. Freddie Mitchell added the extra point and H-S scoring had ended for the year. The Yellow-Jackets squeezed out their 10 points in this toss-up game on a touchdown and a field goal, and the Red 8: Gray was unable to mount a strong enough drive to pull out the defeat. The Bengals played good ball considering the fact that they were seriously handicapped by a number of injuries among the usual starting team. The Tigers ended the year with the Mason-Dixon Tournament in which they lost to Mason-Dixon champion Randolph-Macon, 94-69. About the only bright spot of the season for the Tigers was the selection of Bill Hardin to the first team of the mythical All Small College Virginia squad. Triumphs were over Davidson, 11-43 Elon, 5--ig Belmont Abby, 9-Og North Carolina State, 10-41 Wash- ington College, 1-Og and Harvard, 9-4. Losing only one game in the next five starts, the Bengal batmen had chalked up a 10-1 record by mid-season. The Tiger sticks did not stop booming as arch-rival Randolph-Macon was the next victim on the schedule. The H-S nine banged out 16 hits to take the game 17-5. The most outstanding win of the season was against RPI, when the Tigers unleashed an awesome display of batting power and scored 19 runs to the loser's none. The pitching of Lew Drew, Moley Stuart, Butch Cox, and john McDaniel combined with the slugging of Wayne McLean, Gerald Duncan, Vernell Martin, Larry Hammer, and Tommy Davis to give the Tigers the power they displayed all season long. The very able captain of the 1960 Bengal nine was versatile Leon Hawker. Top-notch hitter, perfect control pitcher, and flawless fielder, Leon was signed at the end of his college career by the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League. Coach Milam summed up Leon perfectly when he said, He is the best little man I ever coached. Coach Milam, in his last year at Death Valley, did an outstanding job with his players. The Tigers ended a successful baseball season, winning four of their last six games. The team did not retain the Mason-Dixon crown this year, but they did finish the season with an impressive 15-6 record, This was the first year since 1956 that the squad did not hold the conference title. The Tigers lost Coleman, Drew, Hawker, Martin, McLean, and Buck Dodson when they graduated, but they have a fine nucleus for a winning team in the .1961 season. .....f-f- V jn- if .i,svfS..':,:-r'ff?9f- 55 if V i 1960 SEASON RECORD Hampden-Sydney. . In the first meet of the year, ever-strong Roanoke College downed the Bengals 9216 to 2992. Bill Benson, Walt Chapman, Carter Zerbe, and Bill Caperton all turned in com- mendable performances. Benson was high pointer for the Tigers with ll points. In their second outing the Red'n'Gray thinclads again were defeated, this time by a powerful William and Mary Cinder squad. Experience and depth were once more the deciding factors in the Tigers' second loss. Things began happening by the third contest, this time held at Death Valley. Bill Caperton took the 440 yard dash in the record making time of :5l.4. Gil Sayers and Walt Chapman tied for individual scoring honors with ll points apiece. The Tigers took first place in twelve of fourteen events. The Bengals' third defeat of the season came at the hands of Washington and Lee, but Bill Caperton l 'Ill-s 1- - - -G' 0 . -an 'S -,Qt -. ff. The H-S squad tied Lynchburg College in the fourth outing 61-61, with Walt Chapman the high scorerzof the meet, bringing in 17M points for the Tigers. Bill Caperton could not be held down in the 1960 season. Having set one 440 mark and then having broken his own record, Bill decided it was time to move into another event. The old school record in the 880 yard run was 2:00.2, after the first annual Virginia State Intercollegiate Track and Field Cham- pionship, Capterton had added another medal to his growing collection by running it in 1:59.5. The cinder men ended the season by finishing third in both the Mason-Dixon and Little Eight con- ferences. Three more Hampden-Sydney records were set in the team's linal meet. The 880 mark was lowered once more by Bill Caperton to 1:59.3. John Graves knocked six-tenths of a second off the 440 time to establish the record at :50.7. The mile relay team placed third, but brought home a new school record of 51257.
