PENSHLRST: erected in 1329 by Synod of North Carolina. which gave it its name: name was changed in 1898 to Penshurst. home uf Algernon Sydney in Kent. England: today it is a faculty home. 5. JOHNS ALDITORILAIZ named for Dr. Frank Stod- dard Johns. Chairman of Board of Trustees, 1938. erected as assembly hall and chapel in 1951. 6. BAGBY HALL: in honor of ,Iohn Hampden Chamber- lain Bagby. the science building was erected in 1922: con- tinues to house the chemistry. biology, and physics class- rooms and laboratories. T. GRAHAM HALL: front section erected in 1333: called Old Presidentls Home: alumni and student publication of- fices are located here now: annex added as gymnasium in 1916 and named for college president. Dr. Henry Tucker Graham: 1954 it was turned into a dormitory and infirmary. 3. MEMORIAL GATE: plans originated in 1919 as a memorial to alumni killed in World War I: built by private subscription in 1921. 9. BELL TOWER: The Asa Dupuy Ivatkins Bell Tower: built in 193-l with bricks coming from locations significant to the colleges history. 10. MORTON HALL: gift from Samuel Packwood Mor- ton in 1936 for academic building: named for his ancestor ,Iohn Morton. charter member of the Trustees. 11. NIcILWAINE HALL: originally called Memorial Hall and used as chapel and classroom until 1936: present name taken after president of Hampden-Sydney 1883-1904, Rich- ard Nlcllwaine. V 12. CKSHING HALL: first used as a chapel. classroom, and dormitory when built between 1822-30 at cost of 529.- 400. now houses upperclassmen. 13. THE ALAKIO: located west of Cushing Hall: oldest building in the community: erected in 1817 for President Moses Hoge: later boarding house until turned into a faculty home at turn of the century. 14. VENABLE FIELD: so named Death Valley by the University of Richmond. who had great difficulty in de- feating the Tigers on their home field. 15. GANIMON GYMNASILM: erected in 1939-4-0 to take place of old gymnasium in Graham Hall: front annex added in 1955 for offices and lounge. 16. TENNIS COURTS. 17. COLLEGE CHURCH: present building erected on site of old College Church in 1365: it is not owned by the college. but is a separate entity itself. 13. PI KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY HOUSE. 19. YVESTAIINSTER HALL: now houses the adminis- tration offices: lruilt c. 1850 as a residence and later as a dining hall for Seminary student. 23. COLLEGE SHOP: the College Shop and Tea Room were added to the campus in 1928-29. 29. POST OFFICE: added in Dr. Gammonis administra- tion in 1942. 30.
