England. - e e x-4. men? Although we have no accurate record of circumstances surrounding the naming of Hampdcn-Sydney. these reasons may he readily conjectured. The one idea which pervaded the thoughts and actions of these founders of our school may he summed up in one word--Liberty. In the immortal words of one of the first trustees. Give me liberty or give me deathlu Small wonder then that the idols of these early patriots were men who had given their very lives for liberty. .-Xnd in what better way could these two men be honored than by having a small liberal arts college bear their name: a college where the ideals of its founders would be passed on from generation to generation. ,lolm Hampden had begun his struggle for liberty nearly a century and a half before our Declaration of Independence was written. He was well-born. highly educated. and heir to an ample fortune. Yet Hampden did not choose this easy life. for it meant abject service to a selfish and unscrupulous king. Instead he sided with an oppressed people in their struggle for liberty. After nearly a quarter of a century of fearless service for this cause. he died the death of a martyr while leading a brilliant charge against the king's forces at Chalgrove Field. where he was mortally wounded. But this cause of English liberty was not to go uncham- pioned. Another brilliant young nobleman, Algernon Syd- ney. took up the fight where Hampden had left off. Sydney's service for liberty is a long tale of brilliant exploits. Upon PEXSHVRST PLACE - present the restoration of Charles II, Sydney. for defiance of the hgnye ,-,f Lord De L'I5le and Dud. king. was exiled for seventeen years. But he returned to ley in Kent. England. It was the England to take up again the cause of liberty. He produced home Of Algeffm Sydnef- a great book. Discourses on Covernmentf, which became a handbook for those who loved civil and religious liberty. Finally he too diecl the ff'lEt1'l.Y1'iS death. He was falsely con- victed and beheaded. his chief crime having been that, in his own words. 'tfrom my youth I endeavored to uphold the common rights of this land, and the true protestant religion, against corrupt principles, arbitrary power, and povertyf' Surely it was fitting to immortalize these two men by nam- ing the new educational institution Hampden-Sydney College.
