Now that the members of this class are about to go their separate ways, they might be expected to think occasionally about the difference these years have made. Actually these occasions are few during a busy Spring, but one of them will surely be the signing of the pledge to the last exam. Even this symbolic moment will soon be forgotten in the haste to get home. for the traditional mixed emotions of graduation will consist mostly of relief for at least a month or two. The Hampden-Sydney Student Body formed the hrst representative sample of the world that most of these voting men had met-they saw characters in this brave new world that they never before dreamed had existed. A general re- sult has been that each has become a little like the rest. The studious have learned to enjoy life: the lazy have been forced by the hght for sur- vival to settle down: the cocky are more thought- ful: and the timid are more at ease. But all of us became more cynical at first- and the college itself was not safe from our sar- casm. Gradually, though, we have learned to take our disillusionments less seriously: and this is definitely for the good. So we leave Hampden-Sydney with a bit of a liberal arts education and, probably more im- portant, some vague idea of why we were given a liberal arts education. And because it is here that we have spent some of our most memorable years. we shall never entirely forget this place. DENisoN MOW'BRAY ALLAN, Historian.
