enior gfadri .Hifi for? Whaf is a senior? According To WebsTer's Collegiate Dirtionary a senior is an undergraduafe in his final year aT an American college, universify, high school, eTc. BUT This is simply a generalized, unqualified definiTion. For ThaT reason iT could noT be employed To accuraTely describe a senior aT Hampden-Sydney. A complefe de- scripfion would require an arficle of greaT lengTh, and even Then would be mosT difficulf To consTrucT. However, There are a few oufsfanding characTerisTics which readily come To mind when one sTops To consider exacTly whaT a senior aT This college represenfs. FirsT and forernosT, a Hampden-Sydney College senior is a genfleman. AssociaTion wiTh genflemen, insTrucTion by genTlemen, and Treafmenf as a genTleman have each played an imporTanT parT in The casfing of The die. This is a genfle influence, passing almoisl' unnoTiced, buT iT is one which is easily discernible in iTs eTfecTs. IT would be false To say ThaT every man who receives a degree aT Hampden-Sydney is a scholar in The sTricTesT meaning of The word: buf if is reasonable To asserT ThaT he has had in The course of his Training many educaTional advanTages which he would noi' have received elsewhere, and on The average This has had iTs ef'fecT. Probably The ouTsTanding feafure of any Hampden-Sydney sTudenT, and especially a senior, is his friendly nafure. Much of This can be aTTribuTed To The afmosphere on The Hill for friendliness seems To radiafe from The ancienT oaks which sTand lilce monu- menTs abouT The campus, consTanT reminders of The TradiTions which have made Hampden-Sydney whaT iT is. A Hampden-Sydney senior is a -sporfsman, lilcing noThing beTTer Than To engage in a good scrap in any aThleTic evenf. He loves To win, and he lcnows how To lose. BuT lose or win, his spiriT is always high, and his conducT is ThaT of a genTleman, wheTher he is acfively parTicipaTing or lending his supporf from The sTands. In concluding, iT is necessary To add one final characferiisfic in order ThaT This de- scripfion shall approach compleTeness. ThaT characTerisTic is one of honor. From The Time ThaT he firsT enrolls aT Hampden-Sydney a sTudenT is puT on his honor To abide by The rules of The school and To conducT himself as a genfleman. The resulT is ThaT before he leaves he is insTilled wiTh a very keen percepfion of honor, and so deeply is This enTrenched, ThaT iT will carry wiTh him Through The remainder of his life, serving even Then To disTinguish him as a Hampden-Sydney genfleman. WINSTON GOULDIN, Class Hisforian 20
