CDREWCRD F, in later years, when the :fires of youth burn with less brightness and the enthusiasms of adolescence are no longer, you can take your Kaleidoscope of 1922 from its wonted place in your li- brary and by reviewing its pages, fan the embers of those youthful fires until they glow with a satisfying melloyvness, and resuscitate those adolescent enthusiasms until they are once more vivid, we, the Staff, will feel amply repaid for our efforts 1n producing this book. We are only amateurs and feel that this should be bome in mind when you are criticising this annual. Eight Historical Summary Opened as Hampden-Sidney Academy, january 1, 1776. Incorporated as Hampden-Sidney College, May, 1783. Under the presidency of Archibald Alexander C1797-18062, increased students and endowment. Under jonathan P. Cushing 11821-18351, life and growth. Under Dr. Lewis W. Green C1848-18565, a prosperous era. Under Dr, john M. P. Atkinson C1857-18835, the distractions of the Civil War, but an administration of vigor and success. Under Dr. Richard Mcllwaine C1883-19045, the Mcllwaine Hall erected, the endowment increased, the system of scholarships extended, the curriculum broadened.
