There were a few other members of this class who did not finish the course. Two of them are still alive and worthy of most honorable mention. They are Blair lf-urwell and Robert XV. Santos. These two make tive in a roll-call of fifteen-a wonderful record of long life and usefulness! XVhat shall I write of those college days? The methods of those days mado men worthy to stand in the presence of their brethren. The campus had its ideals. Politically we swore by the immortal trio, NVebster, Clay and Calhoun. Scott was olll' novelist and poet. Hampden and Sidney and Washington inspired our patriotic orations. Moses Hoge, B. Johnson Barbour, Muskoc ll. H. Garnett, Jack Thornton and Southall were our more immediate models. Marshall, Prentiss and Poe had their worsl1ipe1's. Fun and tisticutfs were heartily enjoyed. Greenhorns were greenies then as now. and goats and asses browsed upon them with the usual relish. Good boys sometimes told lies in jest, and perhaps they regale their grand- children with the sweet memories of their stale witticisms. These same grand- children in college to-day do imitate the genius of their sires. Boys will be boys is an aphorism, or a proverb, hardly up to the rank of a t1'uis1n. Solomon was 11ot the author of it. Those who are, mayhap, curious about his views will please consult Prov. xxvi, 18, 19. Caruthers, our scholarly valedietorian, lived and died a bachelor. It was 1'L'IlU1'iQLl that he once went with his sister to a social function given to his class by the Queen, the presidentfs wife, and, after a hasty partaking of the regulation refreslnnents of popcorn mixed with bits of broken candy, he said. Sis, eollle on, let's go home. I have no small talk for these women. By tl1e way, the Queen very wisely and judiciously gave those simple l'E'fl'CSlll11C'11iS lest others should be deterred from giving entertainments if she set an example of extravaganee. llow these reminiscences do grow. l must cut them short soon, or else the Editor will do it for me. However, Header, suffer a few more. Phil Mcliinney was our statesman as well as politician. His cherished ambition then was to be Governor of his State. and when he came to be Governor no man filled the chair with more dignity, grace and ability. .X student named Scruggs was there in 1851. l make mention of him because his name is somehow left ollt of the general catalogue. No man could excel him in a Fourth of .luly oration, a thing sui generis in those days. He was our statistician. He could name the candidates for otlice throughout the State, and largely outside, and give their respective votes, majorities and minorities for years preceding. No baseball crank, nor football fiend could equal l1i1n tt 1-day. Like them, however, he had small facility for book larnin'. 12
