NY .,vK J' n , .J DITCDRHQULS THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEMOCRACY Democracy developed as the people of different countries felt that the regimes of the tyrants and dictators who op- pressed them were becoming unbearable. Then the people revolted and attempted to form a government which would be fair to all These ups and downs of government date back to the earlv Greeks and Romans During dark ages the land was governed by the fuedal system in which the lower classes had no opportunities of any kind, but were bougnt and sold with the property they lived on as if they were cattle Because of these corditions a oetition was drawn ua and presented to Ting John one of the worst tyrants of england, the IIGSSUPS put on him was so great that he was forced to sign and accept this the great charter, which put more power into the hands of the lords, thu making England ruled by more than one man Although an iaprovement in Government it was by no means the end of their troubles but merely the beginning After the dark age came the period of rebirth known as the renaissance, during which came the age of humanism, or defined, as age of lncrea ed interest in the common man, a more democratic viewpoint also diring the renaissance came the period of exploration and the search for democracy moved to a new country The first democratic development in America took place on the Mayflower Just before it landed on foreign soil The men drew up a form of government by and for themselves, en titled The Mayflower Compact The Fouse of Purgesses in virginia was the next demo cratic form In this there were delegates chosen to mare the laws and enforce them in the countries From then on it was not so uncommon to see democratic forms of government worfing to ether for protection The stamp Act Congress 'as arother time the people vorked together for a common need, to oppose tne tyranny of the fnglish king The Cont nental Confress met to solve the crisis previous to the Pevolutionary Jar trying to e svade the nglish to decla e the Intolerable fct void he Conf es agai met to draw up a sound fo ernment after tie Refolut onary Jar and thev produced the Articles of Confederation, but this did not prove to rave a st eng ceztial ovc n1ent f tn ary power: ' . w P U H 0 . , , 1 N X V I 1 ' ' '- . You make that choice If you know what you want to do, the decision will be ea 1er for you You will notice a difference in the academy study sched ule, from that of the grammar school Here you will have four classes, and three study perlods each day Durlng your Fresh man year these study periods are for one purpose only, studying Fooling away these study periods, not only hinders you, u lt annoys others If you put these periods to use, you have more free time at home What about the teachers? Please don't take the attitude that they don't want to help you All you have to do IS to take your problem to them, and you wlll find that they are willing to give you all the help they can The teachers are far too busy to notice you, if you're having trouble but don't wish help The most important period of the day for a Freshman 13 fuidance This is especlally for you It is the t1me for you to iron out your dmfficulties Don't tale the attitude that 1t's a nuisance, because you can learn a lot if you listen You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose The last but not least of your problems lS the dreaded deflclency, believe it or not, it's really a help to you If you receive a deficiency, it's a warning that you're not doing your best See your teacher about 1t, and find out the trouble Perhaps the subject is hard for you, but nine times out of ten, it just calls for a llttle more studying in that subject When you get adjusted to thls new routlne, and catch your breath, look around, You will find many different clubs you can join, your favorite sport, athletic contests to watch, dances, socials, and always companionship To make your four years the happiest, start with good study habits, and you will find that they're your best friends Donna Thomas '54 . 1 T . The waves were very high and as I sat there with my back against a rock, the waves seemed to tell a message as they slapped upon the beach. If I listened carefully, they seemed to shout HDAN-GER DAN-GER!H with each slap. Now and then I would hear a sea gull's cry and the low whimpering moan of the wind through the twisted spruce trees. The sky looked as though it was going to rainy I took a last look at the bay and slowly went up the winding path towards the house I d1dn't sleep well that night I kept tossing and turning, hearing the waves yell out HDAN GER ' The next day was like the nrevious one, dark and dreary The wind was blowing stronger and warmer That afternoon I again went down the winding path to the ocean and sat on the same rock The air seemed diflerent from that of yesterday I couldn't hear any gull's cry or any seal's bark, all I could hear was the wind, moaning through the trees as if someone in oain were moaning and the wind were copying him The waves were slapping up on the beach again, but this time they seemed to say too late, too late I began to get restless and decided to walk Before long I came to a bend w ere the waves seemed to be larger and vell out louder, TOO LATE 1 Then,to my horror, I saw before me a ram-fedly dressed man and a child, lying on the rocks, and beside them was an overturned raft The man and child were dead, with not a bruise on them Were the waves trying to tell me something yesterday, or was it 1ust my imaginationq Am I dreaming this nowq What is going on? This is a verv hard question to answer, so I leave it to you WHAT IS GGING ON9 Bariy Smith '55 TREES A poem so lovely as a tree A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet flowing breast, tree that lools at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to pra A tree that may in sum er wear A nest of robins in her hair, Upon whose bosom snow has lain, Jho intimately lives with rain Poems are made by fools l11e me, But only God can male a tree Joyce ilmer . . . 3 1 . A BASEBALL GAME Did you ever see a major league baseball game? If you have, you will understand what I mean.when I say that you can feel the tension in the air. Last summer I saw a few major league games. As I sat there at one of them, the score was tied, two all. A - player, supposedly a good hitter from the home team, came to bat. It almost felt as if everybody were expecting a bomb to go off right in his lap. A still quiet hush came over the whole crowdg no one spoke or moved. Cirarettes and pipes were forrotten Nobody stirred until the crack of the bat, then everyone went wlld, hollering and jumping up and oown, onlf to see a player from the VlSltlHE team run over and catch the ball A loud groan was heard from the home fans The next batter came to bat, the pltcher looked him over carefully, wound up and threw The same hush was over the crowd 'Strile one crled the umnir There was boolnp and hollering at the call, then all was quiet avaln T the next pitch cracl' the people roared as they saw the ball come salllnp at them The out fielder sped over, gumped nlfh ln the alr trylne to make the catch The crowd went wild as they saw the ball ro over, and the batter make a home run Colby Evans '56 HIS REWARD The thlck gray fog settled over the little English town, hiding all the good and evll from the townspeople's veiw The clock 1U the great church tower was Just strlking ten Sitting motlonlessly on the park bench, llke part of the country side, was the tr mp A person walklnn bv would never have noticed hlm, so stlll he sat Yet his outward appearance was Just a masl COV6P1Hg from an other's view, the rreat battle oinp on inslde of him 'On, Go I lnow 1t's wronn, out I'm so hunrr H he mlttered slowly to h mself All the whlle his eyes were fxxed on the small bakery shob across the street from whele he sat All hls llfe as far back as he could remember, re had bee ed for food yet that was not stealinr, he had nevel stolen from anyone but no: VlS hunger was almost too rreat nver bone in his body seemed to cr,, Hrood, rood, Foo ,H until the roar seemed to deafen hwm Then all 'as uiet asain Suddenly he found hi self alklnr He was hunfry no more Vis clothes were diffe ent from the ones he had been zearinr Ther :ere beautiful, too b autiful to des P159 and up ahead there las music, muslc such as he had never neard before He hurrled forward so as not to miss any of it James Fenlason '55 l . - 1 X - 1, .
