A-, ,,..., . STATES SHIP UNITED HAMIXIEIQ i USS HAIVINER is named in honor of LT. Henry R. HAIVINER who was killed in action 6 Aprii 1944. LT HAIVINER received his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 1942 and vvas stationed aboard the USS HOWORTH during the Okinawa Campaign. The HOVVORTH was attacked by six kami- kaze aircraft and LT. HAIVINER, as Gunnery Officer, directed his fire to shoot dovvn five of the attacking aircraft. The sixth plane crashed into the gun director and LT. HAIVINER lost his life. He was later awarded the Silver Star posthumously for gailantry in action. l , 1, , Uxrh.. S g .,.. BLACKINGTON WAS BORN IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS AND ATTENDED SCHOOLS IN THE LOCAL AREA. HE GRADUATED FROM MASSACHUSETTS MARI- TIME ACADEMY IN 1951. HE WAS COMMIS- SIONED AN ENSIGN IN 1952. COMMANDER BLACKINGTON SERVED IN USS PICKAWAY IAPA 2221 AS COMMUNICATIONS AND CIC OFFICER. SUBSEOUENT SEA ASSIGN- MENTS WERE AS CIC AND GUNNERY OFFICER OF USS FLOYD PARKS IDD-8841. HE ALSO SERVED IN THE P-RE-COMMISSIONING CREWS OF USS MAHAN IDLG-111 AS WEAPONS OFFICER AND USS BROOKE IDEG-11 AS EXECU- TIVE OFFICER. COMMANDER BLACKINGTON HAS SERVED ASHORE WITH THE DEFENSE ATOMIC SUPPORT AGENCY IN STAFF OPERATIONS AND WITH COMMANDER OPERATIONAL TEST AND EVALUATION FORCE IN THE SURFACE WAR- FARE BRANCH. HE IS A GRADUATE OF THE SCHOOL OF NAVAL COMMAND AND STAFF, USS NAVAL WAR COLLEGE. HIS MOST RECENT ASSIGNMENT WAS WITH THE NAVAL ORD- NANCE SYSTEMS COMMAND AS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ADVANCED AND EXPLORATORY RESEARCH, SURFACE MISSILE SYSTEMS.
