The USS HAMNER is a GEARING Class Destroyer, built by the Federal Ship Build-
ing and Drydock Company, Newark, ew Jersey, and commissioned on 12 July 1946.
After shakedown training at Guantanamo, Cuba, the HAM ER reported to the Pacific
Fleet via the Panama Canal, and was homeported in San Diego, California.
The HAMNER was given her present configuration during 1962 when she under-
went FR M conversion at an Francisco aval Shipyard.
Designed primarily as an Anti Submarine Warfare ship, the HAMNF.R7s mission
includes ASW protection of Carrier Striking Forces and Convoys plus operations with
Hunter-Killer groups which seek out and destroy enemy submarines. The HAM ER's
mission also includes Anti Air and Anti Surface Warfare plus providing Naval Gunfire
Support for Amphibious Operations, and troop support ashore.
Since joining the Pacific Fleet, the HAM ER has made 15 cruises to the Western
Pacific area. t the outbreak of the Korean conflict the HAMNER participated in the
evacuation of Yondek, the defense of Pohang, the landings at Inchon, and the evacua-
tion of Hungnam, and spent five weeks on shore bombardment off the east coast of
Korea in the vicinity of Kojo. The HAM ER returned the heavy fire of shore batteries
inside Wonsan Harbor.
HAM F.R,s Vietnam record is enviable. A veteran of four tours in Vietnamese
waters, HAMNER has the distinction of being the FIRST ship to conduct scheduled
shore bombardment in outh Vietnam, and later among the FIR 'T to conduct bom-
bardment in orth Vietnam. HAMNER was taken under fire by North Vietnamese
shore batteries, but HAMNER7s 5" guns quickly silenced them, maintaining her perfect
record: Never receiving a direct hit by the enemy. HAMNER has steamed up the Saigon
River, in all of the four corps areas, and in North Vietnam sea areas in support of the
Vietnam operation. HAMNER was also the first ship to render assistance to the
ORISKANY during her tragic fire.
The USS HAMNER is named in honor of LT Henry R. HAMNER who was killed
in action in the Pacific Theater of War on 6 pril 1944. LT HAMNER received his
Commission from the United tates Naval cademy in 1942 and was stationed aboard
the USS HOWORTH during the Okinawa Campaign. The HOWORTH was attacked by
six kamikaze aircraft and LT HAMNER, as Gunnery Officer, directed his fire to shoot
down five of the attacking planes. The sixth plane crashed into the gun director and
LT HAMNER lost his life. He was later awarded the Silver Star posthumously for
gallantry in action.
