Q5ii.vEZQH ma K Ytgf is EXECUTIVE OFFICER LIEUTENANT COMMANDER R.G. PORTER, USN Lieutenant Commander Richard Grayson Porter, a native of Penfield, New York, graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1957. I-Iis first assignment was to USS JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, IR. QDD-8505 where he served as Communications Officer, Damage Control Assistant, and Engineer Officer. After a three year tour in KENNEDY, Commander Porter attended the Naval Postgraduate School where he re- ceived a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I-lis next assignment was Commanding Officer of the coastal minehunter, USS BITT ERN CMI-IC-435. His com- mand tour was followed by destroyer staff duty at Charleston, South Carolina, first serving as Materiel Officer on the staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron Six, then as Aide and Flag Secretary to Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Six. Commander Porter reported to I-IAMNER in june 1967. I-le resides in San Diego with his wife, the former Wanda Welliever of Oberlin, Kansas, and two daughters, Susan, age 7 and Laura, age 5. 5 1

Newgard enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served during World War ll in both the Atlantic and Pacific. After the War he attended St. Martin's College, and was commissioned Ensign, USNR, in March of 1949. l-Ie served in USS WEEDEN KDE-7975 and USS GEORGE K. MCKENZIE CDD-8365 during the Korean Conflict. ln 1952 Commander Newgard returned to school at Washington State University, and in 1955 graduated in Chemical Engineering. After a tour in USS HANCOCK QCVA-195 he was assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School Where he re- ceived a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960. Commander NeWgard's next duty Was as Executive Officer of USS HAMNER QDD-7181 from 1960-61. I-Ie later became Commanding Officer of USS WALTON KDE-3615 and USS BRISTER CDER-3275. In September of 1963 he Went ashore as Associate Technical Director to the U.S. Naval Support Activity, Da Nang, South Viet Nam. From Da Nang he returned to 1-IAMNER in November 1966 when he assumed command. Commander NeWgard's decorations include the Bronze Star Medal With Combat V and gold star in lieu of the second award, the Navy Unit Commendation and campaign medals from World War ll, Korea, and Viet Nam. Commander Newgard is married to the former Elizabeth Kemp of Olympia, Washing- ton. The Newgards are the parents of Mary Elizabeth and jesse Douglas. 4
