ss HAMNER DD-718 The United States Ship HAMNER, Destroyer 718, a veteran of fifteen Western Pacific cruises, has seen fourteen changes in command, and has travelled an accumulated distance that would encircle the earth more than thirty times. I-IAMNER was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. , Port Newark, New jersey, and was launched on 24 November 1945. Immediately upon commissioning on 12 july 1946, I-IAMNER was underway for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for the commissioning shakedown cruise. Upon completion of shakedown training the ship was ordered to the Pacific Fleet via the Panama Canal, and cruised to her new home port of San Diego. In December 1949 after two WESTPAC cruises, 1-IAMNER entered Mare Island Naval Shipyard for a major facelifting. 1-IAMNER had her main armament changed and detection capabilities increased. The 40mm. and 20mm. secondary batteries were replaced with three inch caliber rapid fire batteries along with associated fire control systems. ln addition HAMNER was fitted with an air search radar, which greatly extended her effectiveness and modified her capabilities and missions. With the new weapons and radars, I-IAMNER deployed to WESTPAC just as the Korean hostilities were breaking out. During this cruise the ship was called upon to fire support missions, evacuate troops, and conduct ASW patrols. While serving in Korea, I-IAMNER participated in the evacuation of Yondak, the defense of Pohang, and the landing at lnchon.
