I-IAMNER was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. , Port Newark, New jersey, and was launched on 24 November 1945. Immediately upon commissioning on 12 july 1946, I-IAMNER was underway for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for the commissioning shakedown cruise. Upon completion of shakedown training the ship was ordered to the Pacific Fleet via the Panama Canal, and cruised to her new home port of San Diego. In December 1949 after two WESTPAC cruises, 1-IAMNER entered Mare Island Naval Shipyard for a major facelifting. 1-IAMNER had her main armament changed and detection capabilities increased. The 40mm. and 20mm. secondary batteries were replaced with three inch caliber rapid fire batteries along with associated fire control systems. ln addition HAMNER was fitted with an air search radar, which greatly extended her effectiveness and modified her capabilities and missions. With the new weapons and radars, I-IAMNER deployed to WESTPAC just as the Korean hostilities were breaking out. During this cruise the ship was called upon to fire support missions, evacuate troops, and conduct ASW patrols. While serving in Korea, I-IAMNER participated in the evacuation of Yondak, the defense of Pohang, and the landing at lnchon. In need of overhaul and rest, the ship returned to San Diego in March 1951. In July HAMNER entered Long Beach Naval Shipyard to receive additional three inch caliber mounts and improved ASW ordnance Qhedgehogl. HAMNER's ASW capability was thus extended making her a threat against medium speed submarines. The summer of 1958 saw HAMNER become recipient of thirteen E's for battle efficiency. These were earned in the fields of Engineering, Operations, ASW, and gunnery. On 2 january 1962 HAMNER departed San Diego for San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard for Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization CF RAMJ. During this period the ship was fitted out as' she is today with the exception of DASH which was added in 1964. The initial weeks of 1964 were highlighted by HAMNER's participation in Seattle's annual Seafair celebration. While in Seattle the ship played host to thousands of visitors and was later awarded the first SEAFAIRSMANSHIP award for outstanding public relations. HAIVINER departed San Diego for her thirteenth WESTPAC cruise on 5 january 1965, and arrived in Subic Bay on 27 january. From there she escorted the USS HANCOCK CCVA-195 to the Tonkin Gulfg this was HAMNER's first cruise to include a tour of 'Vietnamese waters. A historical first occured on 20 May 1965 when HAMNER became the first U. S. Naval ship to conduct scheduled shore bombardment in South Viet Nam. This was the first use of Naval gunfire against hostile land targets since the Korean Conflict. In july of 1966 HAMNER commenced her fourteenth cruise. During this deployment HAMNER was the first ship to render assistance to the USS ORISKANY QCVA-341 during her unfortunate fire on 26 October in which 43 men were killed and over a hundred were injured. HAMNER then guided ORISKANY back to Subic Bay. Upon arrival in Subic the ship began preparations for a change of command. On 4 November 1966 Commander D. L. Newgard relieved Commander H. R. Pedneault. The following day the ship departed for the coast of North Viet Nam. On 19 November while in company with the USS JOHN R. CRAIG CDD-8855, HAMNER was taken under fire by two shore battery sites. Although neither ship sustained damage, shrapnel was found lying on the main decks. Six hundred rounds of counter-battery were fired in return to this attack. On 8 june 1967 HAMNER visited Portland, Oregon, and participated in the annual Rose Festival. Thousands of visitors were guided through the ship during the five day period. From Portland HAMNER returned to San Diego to prepare for her fifteenth WESTPAC deployment. WESTPAC 56 ' 48 Hamner got underway for its fifteenth WestPac Cruise on 19 September 1967 ,anticipating heavy action in the Vietnamese crisis. After five days the ship pulled into Pearl I-Iarbor, Hawaii, for a three day stay during which time fuel was taken on and necessary briefings were held. Upon completion, I-Iamner proceeded west for a two day stop at Yokosuka, japan, then on to the Tonkin Gulf and action on Yankee Station with USS Coral Sea CCVA-435 in what proved to be an exciting eight days. During this period I-Iamner participated in numer- ous flight operations and two search and rescues for downed aircraft. Subic Bay was the next port of call for six days of upkeep. On 3 November Typhoon Emma chased the fleet from Subic Bay 5 therefore, the transit to 1-long Kong was begun a day earlier than scheduled. After five rough days at sea we steamed into I-long Kong I-Iarbor, and immediately com- menced three days of excellent liberty. Naval Gunfire Support was the next evolution on our schedule, and we proceeded on 11 November to the lower Corps areas of South Vietnam to begin this activity. This was the first chance to put our gtui crews into action, and 1-Iamner expended 1269 rounds during two weeks of gunfire support. With the ship now in need of upkeep, 1-Iamner sailed to Sasebo, japan, for a 10 day visit, and set about accomplishing necessary repairs. Liberty was also very good, tours were con- ducted to Nagasaki and the resort town of Unzen. On 8 December we got underway for Sea Dragon Operations with an overnight visit to Kaoshiung, Taiwan. During our period on Sea Dragon, which was in company with 1-IMAS Perth QD-381, many hours were spent at general quarters as the ship often steamed within ranges- of the North Vietnamese batteries. The remainder of December and early January were spent on Yankee Station with various carrier groups. lt was during this time that 1-Iamner participated in an early morning search and rescue for which Boatswain's Mate First Class Simpson earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroic rescue of a drowning sailor from the USS Ranger CCVA-615. On 4 january the ship sailed back to Subic Bay for 15. days of upkeep before returning to the 1 Corps area for more Naval Gunfire Support in our final assignment. Hamner fired 7, 298 rounds during the final twenty days of that period in the Tet Offensive, and consistently earned the praise of spotters and our superiors in the chain of command. After returning to Subic Bay for a short stay, I-Iamner departed for Wollongong, Australia, for five days of rest and relaxation. ln accordance with tradition a day was set aside when crossing the equator for the shellbacks to initiate the slimy polywogs into the Ancient and Sacred Order of the Deep. As a consequence 23 February proved to be a trying day for the 248 polywogs and great fun for the 30 ,shellbacks who did a fine job in carrying out tradition. From 2 to 7 March the ship visited Wallangang, Australia. The friendly and hospitable attitude of the people was amazing, and the ship was continually swamped with invitations for tours, dinner engagements and sporting events. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves over the five days of unmatched liberty. On 7 March the ship got underway for our home port of San Diego with one day stops at Pago Pago, American Samoa, and Pearl I-Iarbor, I-Iawaii. Throughout the cruise I-Iamner expended 8, 752 rounds of ammunition over 826 missions. 1-Iamner replenished at sea ffuel, ammunition, and suppliesj 42 times. We cruised approx- imately 47, OOO miles using 3, 114, 894 gallons of fuel. Navy Commendation Medals with Combat V were awarded to LCDR R. G. Porter, LT J. E. Minard, LT C. L. Marsh, LTIG W. A. Gray, and C-MGC Edgington for their contributions during the Tet Offensive. Navy Achievement Medals with Combat V were awarded to LTJG C. R. DOVE, BM1 Simpson, GMG1lgou, and FTG2 Rowe. Simpson, as previously mentioned, also earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. ' ' 49 4 J A .5 1,2 'G 1 ,A F' l i 1 5 I V 2 4 y , ? And Australia Was a new continent to us, seemingly familiar though Without comparison. Her people welcomed us, a few demonstrated against us, none ignored us. We found her cities were alive and yet pleasantly relaxed, her countryside rugged but very inviting. The Australians looked and, save coloquial uncertainties, talked like us. Two beers and laughter were more common than a handshake Hospitality above Mm? all else, marked our visit special. Underlying most everything was a sense of familiarity, not with custom, but with purpose. They knew it, and we recog- nized it in them.
