FOR THE 1958 COMPETETIVE YEAR HAIVINER WAS AWARDED THE BATTLE EFFICIENCY HEI' BY COMCRUDESPAC FOR COMPETITION WITHIN DESTROYER SQUADRON ELEVEN. PLUS THE FOLLOWING AWARDSz THE ENGINEERING RED "E", OPERATIONS GREEN MEN' THE ASW MEN' THE TORPEDO IIEI' AND EIGHT GUNNERY "EIS" . QN 22 NQVEMBER 1953 HAIVINER PROUDLY WEARING HER THIRTEEN BATTLE EFFICIENCY IIEISII COMMENCED HER TENTH WESTERN PACIFIC CRUISE WITH DESTROYER DIVISION III- ENROUTE TO THE WESTERN PACIFIC I-IAMNER VISITED 'PEARL HARBOR, T.H. AND MIDWAY ISLAND AND ARRIVED IN YOKOSUKA, JAPAN ON 10 DECEMBER 1958. HAMNER AGAIN OBSERVED CHRISTMAS IN YOKOSUKA AND WAS UNDERWAY ON 26 DECEMBER FOR KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN, ARRIVING ON 31 DECEMBER 1958, FOR SIX WEEKS DUTY WITH THE TAIWAN PATROL FORCE. THIS CRUISE SAW OPERATIONS AS A MEMBER OF TASK FORCE 72, AND WITH THE NEWEST CAR- RIER IN THE FLEET, USS RANGER , AS A MEMBER OF TASK FORCE 77. STOPS IN HONG KONG, YO.. KOSUKA, SUBIC BAY, AND BUCKNER BAY DO'I'I'ED THE CRUISE. THE RETURN TRIP SAW HAMNER HEAD SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR FOR MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, TO HELP THE AUSTRALIANS CELEBRATE CORAL SEA WEEK IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE WHICH SAVED AUSTRALIA FROM INVASION DURING THE EARLY STATES OF WORLD WAR II . THE NORTHBOUND TRIP INCLUDED STOPS IN THE I:IJI'S AND AT PEARL HARBOR. SAN DIEGO WAS REACHED IN LATE MAY 1959, AND A MONTH LATER ENTERED LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD FOR ANOTHER OVERHAUL. 5 REFRESHER AND TYPE TRAINING FOLLOWED THE OVERHAUL AND HAMNER DEPLOYED ON 19 JANUARY 1960 FOR HER ELEVENTH TOUR IN WESTPAC. AFTER TWO MONTHS OF CARRIER TASK FORCE OPERATIONS IN THE VICINITY OF JAPAN, WHICH INCLUDED VISITS TO YOKOSUKA, KOBE AND SASEBO THE SHIP VISITED HONG KONG. HAIVINER AND IVIORTON ESCORTED BON HOIVIIVIE RICHARD TO BOMBAY, INDIA IN APRIL.. THE TASK GROUP CROSSED THE EOUATOR IN THE INDIAN OCEAN ON THE RE- TURN TRIP AND STOPPED IN SINGAPORE FOR TWO DAYS ENROUTE TO YOKOSUKA . HAMNER RETURNED TO SAN DIEGO WITH DESTROYER DIVISION 111 ON 31 MAY. THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR WAS SPENT IN TYPE TRAINING AND LOCAL AREA EXERCISES WHICH INCLUDED PARTICIPATION IN THE SINKING OF TI-IE BELLE ISLE CEX1-AKS-213 WITH TORPEDO AND GUNFIRE. DURING HAMNERIS ELEVEN FAR EASTERN CRUISES, SHE HAS BEEN AWARDED T'I-IE CHINA SER- I VICE, NAVY OCCUPATION WITH ASIA CLASP, KOREAN SERVICE. MEDAL WITH FIVE COMBAT STARS, THE WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL, THE NATIONAL DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL, THE UNITED NATIONS SERVICE MEDAL AND THE KOREAN PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION. ENGAGED IN VARIOUS ONE 12 APRIL 1954 HAMNER GOT UNDERWAY FOR HER SIXTH TOUR IN WESTPAC. SHE STOP.. PED IN PEARL HARBOR FOR ONE MONTH TO CONDUCT GUNNE ING ExERCIS-E. SHE ARRIVED IN YOKOSUKA IN APRIL 1 ENROUTE, RY EXERCISES, AND A MARINE CORPS LAND- 954, HAVING MADE A BRIEF STOP AT MIDWAY WHILE IN. WESTPAC HAMNER VISITED MANY PORTS REMINISCENT OFTHE FORMER TOURS. AMONG THOSE VISITED WERE YOKOSUKA, ATAMI AND SASEBO,JAPANg SUBIC BAY AND MANILA IN THE PHILIPPINES, THE BRITISH GOVERNED PORT OF HONG KONG, AND KAOHSIUNG, FORMOSA. HAM- NER SPENT TWO WEEKS ON KOREAN PATROL JUST BEFORE RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES . DEPARTING YOKOSUKA IN AUGUST 1954 IN COMPANY WITH DESTROYER DIVISION 111 AND DE- STROYER DIVISION 72 HAMNER ARRIVED IN SAN DIEGO 12 SEPTEMBER 1954. AFTER A FEW DAYS LEAVE AND UPKEEP, THE HAMNER ENTERED LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD FOR HER ROUTINE BI-I ANNUAL OVERHAUL. RECEIVING IMPROVED RADAR, FIRE CONTROL AND ORDNANCE EQUIPMENT, THE HAMNER LEFT ,THE YARD, RETURNED TO SAN DIEGO AND ENTERED UNDERWAY TRAINING . ON 28 JUNE 1955IN COMPANY WITH DESDIV 111 HAMNER DEPARTED FOR WESTPAC. DUR- ING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER HAMNER JOINED TASK FORCE 77 FOR OPERATIONS IN KOREAN WA- TERS . THEREAFTER HAMNER ENGAGED IN GOOD WILL TOURS TO MANY FAMILIAR PORTS OF CALL. IN OCTOBER HAMNER PROCEEDED TO TAKE STATION IN THE FORMOSA STRAIT AS A UNIT OF THE FORMOSA PATROL FORC E . AFTER A SHORT STAY IN YOKOSUKA HAMNER RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES ON 11 DECEM- BER 1955. DURING THE NEXT FOUR MONTHS HAMNER FULFILLED OPERATIONAL COMMITMENTS FOR TYPE TRAINING DESTROYER QUALIFICATIONS AND IN JUNE 1956 HAMNER AGAIN PARTICIPATED IN PACIFIC FLEET TRAINING EXERCISES. ON 13 JULY 1956 HAMNER AS A UNIT OF DESDIV 111 DEPARTED FOR HER EIGHTH TOUR OF DUTY IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC THIS TIME BY WAY OF BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA, WHERE AN UNUSUALLY WARM WELCOME WAS RECEIVED. AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OFTASK FORCE OPERATIONS FROM JAPANESE AND PHILIPPINE PORTS HAMNER REPORTED' FOR DUTY ON THE TAIWAN PATROL FROM 5 DECEMBER TO 28 DECEMBER 1956. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A RECREATIONAL VISIT TO HONG KONG. SEVERAL WEEKS TYPE TRAINING AND DEPARTURE IN LATE JANUARY 1957 FOR HOME PORT SAN DIEGO AND A NAVY YARD OVERHAUL IN LONG BEACH. ON 15 SEPTEMBER 1957 HAMNER COMMENCED HER NINTH WESTERN PACIFIC CRUISE WITH A REPEAT VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. WHILE ENROUTE TO AUSTRALIA HAMNER TOOK PART IN THE HIBISCUS FESTIVAL AT SUVA, FIJI ISLANDS . AFTER FIVE DAYS VISIT AT MELBOURNE HAMNER WAS UNDER- WAY FOR MANUS , ADMIRALITY ISLANDS THEN GUAM , M .I . AND ON TO YOKOSUKA , JAPAN WHERE SHE ENJOYED CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS . DURING THE REMAINDER OF HAMNERIS NINTH WESTERN PACIFIC CRUISE SHE VISITED, WITH DESTROYER DIVISION III, THE FOLLOWING PORTS: BUCKNER BAY, OKINAWA, SUBIC BAY, P.I, , MA- MILA, P.I., HONG KONG, B.C.C., KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN, DINGALIN BAY, P.I., GUAM, M.I.. MIDWAY ISLAND AND PEARL HARBOR. DURINGTHIS CRUISE HAMNER TOOKV PART IN PATROL DUTY IN THE TAIWAN STRAITS DURING THE PERIOD 16 JANUARY TO 9 FEBRUARY 1958. SHE ALSO TOOK PART IN OPERATION STRONGBACK, A COM- BINED UNITED STATES AND PHILIPPINE NAVY AMPHIBIOUS EXERCISE FROM 23 FEBRUARY TO 3 MARCH 1958. HAMNER ARRIVED IN SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA ON 23 MARCH 1958. THE HAMNER WI-I-I-I WILTSIE CDD-716D AND BENNINGTON CCVA-205 ATTENDED THE IN- TERNATIONAL NAVAL REVIEW AND BRITISH COLUMBIAIS CENTENNIAL IN JULY 1958.
