During the late summer, Happy operated in all of his many professions, from shooting his Southern California waters, training for the big guns to holding damage control drills - he be- iob he was to do in "WestPac". He practiced lieved in being ready - just in case . . .

There were women and chil- dren watching from the USS DIXIE IAD-141 as the HAMNER got underway who didn't share his enthusiasm either. Happy pretended not to notice. Instead he listened to the CruDesPac band play "China Night," and "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," and "Somebody Stole My Girl." Real morale builders, he thought to himself.
