From Brisbane the HAMNER sailed north crossing the equator again in a less spectacular and less painful manner. On August 14, 1956 we docked at Apra Harbor on the picturesque tropical island of Guam. Guam is the southern most and largest island of Ihe Marianas Islands. The other iwo most known islands of Ihis group are Tinian and Saipan. The island became an American possession in 1898 as part of the peace treaty which ended the Spanish-American War and has been administered by the U. S. government ever since. The island is strategicly localed in the Pacific and therefore has a large naval station as well as an extensive Air Force facility.
