Sandy Strauch and Carmel Haney sing in A Serendipity Experience. Choral Sponsors And Aids Vocal With the theme., Serendipity Ex- peri e n ce, the fall concert was pre- sented November 16, 1973. All five choirs participated, with a total of 180 students singing to an audience of 850. DuringDecember the annual Christ- mas Concert presented We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Later that month Concert Choir sang Christmas tunes over WJOB, and at the School Admin- istration Center. At the District Solo and Ensemble Contest, sixty Tech students entered five ensembles and twelve solos. Win- ning a first place in the ensemble ' s di- visionwere: Girls ' Barber Shop Quar- tet, Folk Singers, Boys ' Ensemble, and Girls ' Ensemble-B. Doreen Lee. Jerry btorey, Becxy White, ana Ken Van Sickle placed first in the different solqist categories. Stage Experience Em h ellis h me nts Girls ' BarberShop, ensemble, and Doreen Lee, soloist, took f i r s t place during the State Music Contest, held at Butler University, Indianapolis. During March the Choral Depart- ment participated in the Broadway mu- sical comedy, Flower Drum Song. Miss Snyder directed, Doreen Lee stu- dent directed, with many of the lead parts played by Choral students. The entire Concert Choir participated as the chorus. The final concert will be held May 17, withmusic awards presented at this time. The Tech Folk Singers opened their season by singing for a Girl Scout Ban- quet at Tech. They have twenty- eight shows scheduled for this school year. Page 12

The Hammond Tech Band started off the year with a busy schedule of football games at which they performed. Besides entertaining the crowds of avid spectators, the Band also played the tunes requested by the Pom-Pons and the Majorettes, such as Hava Nagila and Michael Melody . Providing the music, the Tech Band pa r t i c i pated in the annual Christma s Parade through downtown Hammond, Despite c old mouthpi ec es and frigid instruments they proudly marched along, Next on their agenda was An Even- ing ■ Of Christmas . W orking with the C h o r al and Drama Departments, they supplied Christmas music to soothe the savage beast . Quickly thereafter BasketballSeason was upon them, and as with the football games, the Band played at half-time. T he NISBOVA Contest held in Feb- r uary was a success for all Tech par- tic ipants. All who attended returned with an excellent rating, as well as ten medals. D u r i ng March they participated in the musical production of The Flower Drum Song . The Instrumental Department is di- vided into three areas: Concert Band, Cadet Band, and Instrumental. All three are conducted by Mr. A, Hender- long, Band Instructor. Page 14
