1974 Chart Volume L Hammond Technical- Vocational High School 5727 Sohl Avenue Hammond, Indiana TABLE OF CONTENTS Fall activities Fall sports Students Ads Student life I ndex It is not very easy to design a yearbook. There is a lot of work to be done and a lot of responsibility that goes into the job. It ' s an even bigger job to de- si g n a yearbook that the students will like and en- joy. It ' s true that every so often people get tired of the same old thing. Sometimes, too, peo- ple run out of idea s f or the same old traditions. So this year, we decided to do something different with our yearbook We de- cided to get away from tradition and try what many college s ha e started to da We thought it would be interesting for you and also a challenge to us to come up with something new. I hope with all the time the staff arid others are put- ting into these three sec- tions, that you will enjoy them. Of course, there are some people who do more 4-17 18-31 32-49 50-31 52-53 54-56 than others, and therefore deserve credit. I would like to give special thanks to these staff members. Rich Tunis, who even after graduation, returned to perfect the sports. T h e r e ' r e also Rich Jablonski and Jeff Crooks, who came through with the photographs when we need- ed them most A big thanks goes to Harry of Bodie ' s, who taught us better late than never and helped get the show on the road. A s p« c i al thanks to Mrs. M yers for all the help she gave me and for the yelling to make me get my work done. And I wo uld like to thank the rest of the staff for adding their 2£. N o w I w ould like to present you with the first section of your new year- book. May you enjoy it. Kris Kras, Editor ' l £$ee c We’ve Come a Long Way, Tigers ! February 23rd was the date for two performances of The Red Shoes, which the Tech players produced for the Hammond Association of Childhood Ed- ucators. The play provided mid-winter entertainment for all elementary stu- dents in Hammond. This spring Tech will receive a charter for the National Thespian Soci- ety. This is an honorary organization based upon a point system. Students are selected on past performances, both backstage and in acting capacities. This o r g a n i zation is for drama as well as choral students, and is designed for the advancement of the theatre arts. The final performance of the school year will be, The Importance of Being Earnest, a Victorian drawing room comedy, with ail three scenes on stage. Providing the music, the Tech Band pa r t i c i pated in the annual Christma s Parade through downtown Hammond, Despite c old mouthpi ec es and frigid instruments they proudly marched along, Next on their agenda was An Even- ing ■ Of Christmas . W orking with the C h o r al and Drama Departments, they supplied Christmas music to soothe the savage beast . Quickly thereafter BasketballSeason was upon them, and as with the football games, the Band played at half-time. T he NISBOVA Contest held in Feb- r uary was a success for all Tech par- tic ipants. All who attended returned with an excellent rating, as well as ten medals. D u r i ng March they participated in the musical production of The Flower Drum Song . T e c h ' s only victories came over East Chicago schools Roosevelt and Washington early in the season. After being shut out 5-0 by Hammond Mor- ton, hopes were that victories over Whiting and Gavit would afford Tigers- a 4-3 record. Disappointment made its mark as these final matches were both lost causes. Sectional action opened the door of hope but victory was not to be. Tech dropped Gavit in the first round doub- les butfell to Bishop Noll in round two. Tech also stopped Roosevelt in their doubles division, but fell to a revenging Gavit dub. All told. In Soundly Defeating Area Teams , Distance Runners Gain Satisfaction Morethana year of respectability can be granted Tech distance runners this past season. Fine performances by individual stars combined for ex- cellence throughout the season. Harriers opened the season with a shocking 21-39 loss to Munster ' s fin- est. Two days later Tigers placed a solid sixth in a 25 team field at Thorton F ractional Invitational. From there, Tech was victorious in ten success ive outings, including wins over conference teams, Clark, Gavit, and Morton. positions 1, 2, 3. A victory over ECR October 2 failed to. stimulate Tech runners as eventual conference champion Hammond held on for an easy victory the same day. Tech placed only three men in the top ten, and only one in the first six. In conference action at Dowling Park, Tigers took a hefty third place behind HHS and Clark. Crown Point sectional saw Tiger endurance gain them a more than res- pectable sixth place in a 24-school field. State powerhouse Portage defeated Tech 43- 1 7 September 27 to break Tig- er s winning streak. Dunelander s took five of the top six places including In sea son competition, Tech senior ace Dave Aulph set a Z mile school record with 12:47 clocking. Freshmen Football Squad Drives — Dives to Experience Varying Year Once again frosh pigskin Tigers displayed fine talent and gained a well- deserved 4-5 season tally for their trouble. Teams with determination are far apart and few between, but f r e s h man football coaches R. Rey- ome and C. Emlund have had the ex- perience of coaching many these past few years. The ' 73 squad was no exception. Tigers opened by losing to Noll ' s Warriors 4-0 but came back to defeat Hammond Gavit 14-6. A 14-8 loss to E. C. Roosevelt came next, followed by a perfect won, lost, won, lost pattern for the remainder of the year. When askedto comment on the sea son as he saw it. Coach Reyome replied, although the season ended on a sour note, the win over Hamm- ond made the seas on a complete success. 1. to r. : 1st row - P. Lenzo, M. Brown, J. Dorsey, K. Henderson, W. JV Team Lacks Support Incentive • Learning Stunted by Disappointment Disappointment and disgust well describe the B-team Tigers feelings when confronted with an 0-7 cumulative record in two vears. A lack of enthusiasm and little support have al- most condemned Tech junior-varsity football for- ever. Yet for the winter sportsman it is a time for activities such as ice- skating, skiing, snowmobiling and many other winter sports. Winter seems to remind us of people bundled up building snowmen, having snowball fights, sitting around a fire- place roasting marshmdlows and drinking hot chocolate. But for others it is a time of dullness and dreariness while waiting for the recreations of summer to begin. Many people are making their plans for things like graduation and vacations, while some st udents will search for summer jobs. This winter the energy crisis caused many problems, even if people wanted to go on a trip to get away from the cold, they couldn ' t because many cars were lined up and sometimes sitting for hours waiting for gas.
