The Chart 1968 Volume XLIV Hammond Technical Vocational High School Hammond, Indiana 1 Tech, the school on the go; The school in the know. It is always moving, Never losing. But stop. Listen. What really makes Tech tick? Marina Garcia and Helen Eckard discuss matters of importance over the office desk. Shops and practical service class- es, as well as courses in public speaking provide the stu- dents with essential skills. These opportunities are avail- able to no other students in this region. Time passes quickly for Tech students, and as graduation approaches, they are fully prepared to meet life, because along with their education, they have a skill. Their work and efforts are truly part of “Making Tech Tick.” Office practice classes have helped Lynn Flickinger and many oth- er girls to learn office procedures. Tom Branson is shown testing an engine; a skill that can be used in many ways. Bill Zacker is being trained in public speaking. 5 Eight Hours of Classes The Tigers take time out during the tense moments of a game to listen to Coach George Bereolos. Tech ticks all day, from Government classes to the basketball court. Time, time, time. It is very important for Tech’s livelihood. During 4th. and 5th. hours, the Tigers take a break for lunch. For shop credits, some of them can work in the cafeteria and learn all of the concepts about quantity cooking. They prepare many of the foods that are served. There is always time for athletic events. Tech could not be success- ful without strong, healthy students. Martha Hernandez is busily studying in Miss Peehl’s government class. and Work Rick Chandler displays his ability on the parallel bars. Music makes the tempo at Tech. 8 The library, though set aside for study, can be used just for enjoyment, too. Everybody has an extra hour sometime in his career at Tech. These hours can be used up in as many ways as there are hours in a day. If you have a special interest, you can join the rest of the go group and become part of the extra curricular activities, or you can just relax for a while and read your favorite magazine. Either way, you are part of Tech. Students with Special Interests 12 Homecoming dance is enjoyed by everyone. Activities Enjoyed by All The main activity enjoyed this year was Homecoming. After the homecoming game was a dance. Other activi- ties included the Hammond Christmas Parade, football games, basketball games, wrestling. Tech’s first swim- ming team and school assemblies. Ac- companied by Miss Ritter, these students journeyed by train visiting Washington for two days, and spending two days in New York. Students were able to visit such places of interest as Mount Vernon, Capital Building, Radio City Music Hall, U.N. Building, Statue of Lib- erty, and Thomas Jefferson Memorial. It was a won- derful opportunity for our students to view some of the historical spots in our country. A sky line view of New York is shown, which was taken from the observation tower of the Empire State Building. 22 The exhausted faces of students show the experience of the long and tedious trip to Washington. Seniors Prepare for Final Prom Tech Upper-classmen participated in the annual Prom. The 1968 Prom, on May 24, was a tremendous success. To go to the Prom, however, each person had to prepare. Hours of primping were required for the girls, and fit- tings and flowers had to be taken care of by each es- cort. For the Juniors, the Prom was a new experience. The Post-Prom party, planned by the PTA, provided extra hours of fun. It lasted far into the night. Dawn brought about the end of an exciting day. Wes Norton orders flowers for the Prom. Each semester covers a different phase of Lan- guage Arts: American Literature to Shakespeare’s Mac- beth and from grammar to creative writing. Included in the language arts classes offered at Tech were composition, journalism, speech, literature, and drama. The basics taught in these classes are very helpful in our every day life, not only in school, but also on the job. Each English class is another step toward broaden- ing our understanding of languages and culture of to- day. Students in Mrs. Kackley ' s English 7 class are taking a Science Jerry Collingwood and Benny Joines examine a telescope. 36 Ruben Oretegon and Janise Hagen work with chemicals in Chemistry Lab, Mathematics Mathematics have always been an essential part of Tech. Shops and Math go hand in hand to prepare the stu- dents for the future. Algebra, Geometry, and Math are all a part of Tech’s program. Practical Math can be ap- plied to the lives of each Tiger today and for the rest of his life. The world is changing from manpower to machinery, and with machinery comes Math. Tech stu- dents will be prepared to meet this challenge. Lockie Cole is working to get her problem correctly written. Tom Yocum and Charles Navaro, are working at the board in one of Mrs. Jones’ math classes. Mrs. Jones aids Liz Santa in Math 1. Norbert Knight demonstrates on the slide rule. Steve Ludwig and Pam Miles work a geometrical problem. Mrs. Peehl ch ecks homework in Government Class. Social Studies Mr. Bain listens to a scientific explanation given by Diane VVanio and Roger O’Rourke. Developmental Provided for special students at Tech are developmental classes which aid each student in making the most of his abilities. Andy Leus and Kathy Jones locate countries on the globe in Mrs. Tom Leict gives class discussion on social studies. Lewis’ world history class. Later, Zeke Wren and Donna Gerrion aid in discussion with Mr. Hafner’s help. John Pavich is creating one of his many pieces of art work Fine Arts There is a time for work, and a time for enjoyment. The Fine Arts Classes reflected the many different phases of enjoyment at Tech. Art, Drama, Music, and Spanish gave the students a chance to learn while they created. Many of the projects were done for the benefit of Tech, but some had the sole purpose of giving satis- faction to the students. These students gave Tech a reason to tick in the year 1967-8. 44 am The library, though not a Fine Arts Class, is used by Rodney Bagwell and many others to explore and broaden their minds. The Concert Choir adds to Tech’s spirit by putting on numerous programs for the student body. Robert Jones and Kevin Hayes devote their ti me one hour each day to learn Spanish in preparation for the future. SHOPS Freshman boys are required to take four nine-week courses for preparation to shop. These include; Explora- tory Electric where they learn the basics of electricity. Exploratory Wood teaches the basic of wood and wood tools. In Exploratory Drafting, they get a basic introduc- tion to drafting and in Exploratory Metals they are intro- duced to tools, machines, and operations. This also aids them in an area of work to suit them. Don Kaleta is using a triangle to draw in Exploratory Drafting. A champion emerges only after hours of practice and dedication. Tech was suc- cessful because many groups of athletes were willing to make sacrifices daily on the dusty practice fields or nearly empty arenas. For the first time Tech fielded a swimming team made up of mainly underclassmen who had never participated in varsity competition. Other sports teams-baseball, track, golf— were able to call upon years of Tech tradi- tion to help in tough going. A sports season starts weeks ahead of the opening game, and is classed a success if the team improves, unites, and reaches a peak at the end of the long season. Track: First Row: C. Perkins, S. To be a Tech athlete takes not only physical ability, but a great amount of dedication and practice after school and on Saturdays, many times in adverse weather conditions. The golfers and baseball players must wait for the snow to melt and the ground to dry. The track team, however, has many indoor meets. The gym serves as a practice area for the baseball players during the wet weather while the golfers practice their swings in the squad room. The swimmers are not hampered by bad weather. Senior Class History MOTTO When the going gets tough, the tough get going FLOWER Yellow carnation tipped in navy blue COLORS Yellow and navy blue YELL We’re going to be different, We’re going to be great, We’re going to be remembered, As the class of ’68! The reign of the 1968 Seniors has drawn to a close. The final grades have been issued and diplomas received. Tech’s newest alumni now face their futures. With mixed emotions, they have bid adieu to their 4 year home. Commencement on June 5, officially ended their stand as Mighty Seniors of Tech. That day in June represented many hours of study and fun, hours that are vital to life at Tech. As they look back on their high school years, some of the fondest memories will be of friends. “Senior Days” were happy days. Everyone tried to out- do everyone else in their costumes for Sweatshirt Day, Bermuda Day, Dress Up Day, and Mr. Welty Day. The Senior Play on March 22, the Senior Dinner on May 29, and the Prom on May 24 following in the tradition of 48 previous Senior classes. We are the class of ’69. As the Class of 1969 came closer to their Senior year, they had numerous activities. Their part in Tech’s history will never be forgotten. Among their activities were elections, the Junior-Senior Party, given in honor of the graduates, and the Prom was held in May. These were all memora- ble dates for everyone, especially the Seniors. The Juniors, like all of the other students helped to make “Tech Tick.” 106 JUNIORS Shirley Anderson Daniel Bandwick Connie Bowles Pat Brill Refugio Cano Perry Carlton Ricky Chandler David Chase Ray Childress Robert Chocholek Mary Ciba Mike Clark Pat Clark Bruce Clarkson Pam Coffman Linda Cole Trilly Cole Teena Coleman Wanda Collingwood Mary Covarrubias Donna Cummins Marvin Cummins Sandra Cummins Carolyn Cunningham Sheldon Cutler Carolyn Davis Frank Delgado Robert Dills George Domagalski Sharom Doppler Thomas Donavan Tommie Dorsey Pete Dukes Sylvia Durr Dave Dutro Nancy Dzipak Wayne Earl Alan Edwards Doug Ellison Jerr) ' Emerson Jame Epley David Evanoff Tom Ewing James Farmer Marie Farina Sandra Fentress Alan Ferry John Fisher Aurelio Flores Charlotte Follard Scott Frailich Jack F redericks Randall Friend Bruce Frostick Kenny Fruit Mary Ann Gadish Pat sy Gamble Charles Gass Bruce Gerenda Ira Gibbs Carol Godwick Barbara Golumbeck Francis Grabarek 107 JUNIORS Mary Graham Eugene Graska John Grimmer Larry Grise Patricia Hall James Hamersley Diane Hantz Bob Harney Walter Harrington Miriam Harper Chuck Hendricks Howard Hernandez Rick Hidalgo Jim Higgason Terrell Higginbotham Jerry Hildreth Ted Hillestad Bill Hinkel Rich Hoholek James Holland Steve Hudi Cage those Pioneers is demonstrated by one attractive float. 108 JUNIORS Walter Ignas Teriy llift Rosie Jackson Roslyn Jacobs Donald Johnson Thomas Johnson Benny Joines James A. Most of all, I will miss the challenge of organizing and compiling a book showing Tech in its truly wonderful light. The book was put together by the long hours and hard work of many people. The seven editors of the book were the ones most responsible for the design and lay- out of the CHART. Mrs. Meyers, our untiring sponsor, helped us with the many many problems that a yearbook staff faces. The beautiful photography throughout the book was produced by Bodie Studio, and our many thanks for cooperation go out to Harry and Mac. The CHART could not have approached its beauty without their devoted efforts. Mr. Frank Woschitz of Para- gon Printers gave invaluable assistance in laying out the book and being ready to help whenever we sounded a distress signal. For her work on the Senior section, and her help in every other part of the book, I must give my special thanks to Sharon Grace. All of our underclass editorial assistants did a wonderful job. One of these capable people was Sharon Scott, who, even though in- experienced, was a major contributor to the publication of the CHART. Most of all, I am indebted to the faculty for their cooperation and help when it was needed most. I would like to thank each of you for your assistance, even though it often caused inconveniences.
