BENSON, Former director of Tech, who devoted his life to advancing our education, we dedicate this THE CHART OF 1958 4 inged by a horizon of homes, churches, stores, and mills places of our future - students of 1958, chip course to a point on , , I OUR OWN HORIZONS . . . We diagrammed sentences, cheered at games, typed stencils, operated machinery, organized committees, marched in the band, prepared a meal. We took ourselves along the beginnings of an exciting adventure that would some day find us in the home as homemaker, a mill as breadwinner, a polling place as voter, a church as worshiper. Y-TEENS OF TECH The activities sponsored by the Y-Teen Club of 1957-58 were as follows: Black-Cat Sock Hop, in the school gym; Blue Jean Supper, at the youth center; Fellowship Tea, at Woodmar Methodist Church; Sugar Plum Christmas Dance; Y-Teen State Conference, in South Bend; and Sweetheart Formal Ball. The service projects were for: Carmelite Home, Geralds Nursing Home, St. Margarets Home, Mt. Mercy, Woodmar Nursing Home, Crown Point Nursing Home, School for the Blind, and the Brooks House. There were four initiation services. There were inter-club meetings with nine other high schools, and a Satellite Supper was held in the youth center. Y-Teens also had a mother and daughter senior tea, the Y-Teen camp conference, and the Y-Teen spring-training conference. Miss M. McCort was the sponsor of the Y-Teen Club. The Tech organization had 200 members. GIRLS ' CLUB FOR CHRISTIAN SERVICE The primary objective of the Girls ' Club for Christian Service is to provide a medium for the aesthetic development of its members since there is not enough time for facilities in regular classroom assignments to acquire all the desired social amenities. The club is open to all girls who attend our school. The ideals and activities established by past members of this club afford many wonderful opportunities for guidance in important phases of citizenship, leadership, fellowship, character building, and service. Traditional activities include, among other things, a formal instal- lation of officers, a beautiful initiation ceremony for new members, a number of Christmas functions including a well-appointed Christmas Good Deed,” a tea for all teachers, trimming the Christmas tree, an all school formal dance, and a picnic in the spring. Officers were Patricia Hochstetler, president; Barbara Stiller, vice- president; Kathryn Carlson, secretary; Kathie Brici, treasures. SCIENCE CLUB Gerald Harasity was the president of the Science Club; George Schonert, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. The purpose was to create more interest in the problems of science. The group met the first Wednesday of each month. Most of their activities were getting ready for the science fair and taking various field trips. This year they went to I.B.M., to the Illinois Institute of Technology, and to Wolf Lake Rocket Site. STUDENT COUNCIL The president of the Student Council was Genievee Turner; vice- president, Andy Berolos; secretary, Sue Williams; and the treasurer was Bill Snow. The purpose of this organization was to enable the student body to participate in conducting extra-curricular activities; to establish a more united student body; to promote school spirit; and to set up such regulations as necessary to carry out these principles. The student council sponsors one dance a year. It also conducted all the fund raising drives. GLIDER CLUB The Tech Glider Club was organized in the fall semester of 1957 with the following officers: Bob Estrada, president; Phil Michael, vice-presi- dent; Bill Beck, secretary; Ed Griffith, treasurer. Its purpose was to give Tech boys interesting, safe, and economical aviation training and recreation. A light airplane is being converted to a simple two seat training glider, which may be ready for flights before June, 1958. Meetings were 7 p.m. each Tuesday in room 109, 221, or at the aviation shops. The business and activities of the ’57-’58 season were concerned mostly with the construction of the two seater. The eventual goal of the club was to have frequent flying sessions close to Flammond using the safest and most economical training equipment and techniques. VISUAL AIDS The visual aids department was responsible for showing all educa- tional films during the school year and for the operation of the public address system for all school affairs. The projectionists’ other duties in- cluded care of equipment, setting up the filmstrip projectors, and running the tape recorder and phonographs. Other equipment, such as the lettering devices and the dry mount press, were always available for instructors to check our or use. Members of the visual aids department were instructed by Miss Rybolt. 124 TECH TIMES The Tech Times Newspaper was published every three weeks under the direction of their editor-in-chief, Judith Foreman. The page editors were Virginia Spindler, Janice Lake, Judith Lauerman, and Barbara Swider- ski. Richard Kozol was sports editor, assisted by Glen Granger. Tom Benoit has done the art work for the newspaper, and Judy Waddell and Jeanette Stephens have been the feature writers. As news bureau correspondent, Barbara Stiller kept the Hammond Times school news editor Robert Beyer supplied with items of interest about Tech. Theresa Stitt and Tom Milich have been in charge of exchanges and circulation. With the help of Mrs. Harriet Kramer of the commercial department it has been possible to produce a legible mimeographed Tech Times which was given to each Tech student. The first page name plate was printed for the newspaper by the print shop with Mr. A. Schpltz instructing. CHART Horizons of 1958” was the theme chosen by the ' 58 Chart staff. Marilyn Saberniak, editor-in-chief, and Linda Shei, managing editor, were also members of the ' 57 Chart staff. The other members were: Sandra Radzinski, business manager; Norman Fenstermacher, co-business manager; Ruth Hartman, copy editor; Beatrice Bolek, underclass editor and bookeeper; Judy Hudspeth, senior editor, and Judy Litton. The entire Chart staff were ad salesmen. Ray Kottka and Kitty Carlson assisted the staff in selling ads. Mr. Clyne was the faculty sponsor. SHOP SAFETY Through the years, teen-agers have asserted their leadership in student councils, student governing boards and committees. Now they ' re tackling the problem of accident prevention. At Hammond Tech in 1957-58, a Safety Council taught accident prevention in school shops. The ultimate goal was to turn out accident-free workers when the students graduate and enter industry. There were 34 representatives and 34 alternates for the boys’ shops and 11 representatives and 11 alternates for the girls ' shops. Being leaders, they held the respect and admiration of their classmates, an important prerequisite for any safety education program. In addition to becoming amateur safety supervisors, the repre- sentatives learned some basic first aid techniques. Miss Erickson, the school nurse, taught the council members first aid. They learned the difference between lacerated, incised, and puncture wounds, and even can distinguish between first, second, and third degree burns. Besides treating minor injuries, the safety man had other first aid responsibilities. He was in charge of keeping a good supply of first aid material in his shop. In addition to using his leadership and influence to make other students safety-conscious, the safety man kept a daily accident report record. The accidents were totaled weekly, and a monthly report was sent to Mr. R. M. Wilson, safety supervisor of shop safety for an overall monthly shop safety report. NURSES CLUB The first Wednesday of each month the Nurses Club met to discuss opportunities in professional nursing and allied fields. This year, members attended career night at Hammond High and visited schools of nursing in Hammond, Gary, and Chicago. JUNIOR RED CROSS Raymond Kottka was president; Shirley Sotak, vice-president; Judy Lauerman, secretary; Marilyn Saberniak, treasurer. Tech students who joined the Jr. R. C. were automatically members of the Hammond J. R. C. and also of the national organization. At each of these three levels there is the same purpose — service for others. Tech ' s major project was to help the Carmelite Home. With con- tributions from students (members and non-members) and the faculty, 188 cans of food were given to them before Christmas. Tech shared in city-wide projects by contributing toys for the Christmas Cheer Fund and helping in the purchase of two hearing aids for needy students in Hammond. For the national project, Tech filled 75 overseas gift boxes. GEOGRAPHY CLUB The officers of the Geography Club were as follows: Olivia Love, president; Sharon Ramsey, vice-president; Joyce Brakley, secretary; and Judy Cochran, treasurer. Their regular monthly meetings were held after school on the third Monday of each month, but the special meetings were called by the prsident when it was necessary. The October meeting was mainly a social hour for honoring new members. On October 12, twenty-five members spent a day at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. In November, the club purchased two sets of film strips for use in the Geography classes. An emblem for the club was designed and ordered. At the December meeting Michelle Coleman gave a chalktalk on the poem, The Night Before Christmas.” At the March meeting Lois Timperley gave a report on Ireland. On April 25, the Geography Club sponsored an all-school dance, Round the World Hop. For the last meeting on May 19, Miss Phyllis Ford will give a talk on Iran, using slides taken by her parents while in that country. The club is planning to buy additional film strips at the close of the year with a balance of funds in the treasury. The purpose of the Club was to foster a growing interest in study of the nations of the world and their people so as to gain a better understand- ing of their problems and their ways of living.
