Seniors graduate; couples attend prom Graduation ceremonies for 246 seniors took place June 7, 1976 on the HHS football field, a tradition which had been discontinued for several years. The memories of faces and happenings at Hammond High reeled through the gradu- ates’ minds, and a trace of sadness at leaving was even present in some eyes. Friends and relatives attending commencement watched from the bleachers as their respective gradu- ates filed off the field and out into the world, their world. High school achievements of the seniors w ere recognized at the 90th annual Honors Day Program. Dr. F. K. Feuerbach presented awards, medals and certificates to their recipi- ents. NHS members received white carnation corsages or boutonnieres in honor of the 50th Anniversary of HHS’s National Honor Soci- ety. Mr. Strater, head of sports, announced Rudy Chapa as Senior Athlete of the Year. The theme A Time For Us” set the mood for the June 4, 1976 Junior-Senior Prom. The festivities took place at The Admiral’s Con- vention Center in Merrillville, where every- one danced to the music of Buddy Pressner’s band. Post-Prom featured music by Pyramid. Awaiting conclusion of POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, graduates anticipate commencement exercises. Senior Class President Dennis Jarret leads Pledge of Allegiance at commencement. Summer institutions attract students STUDENT LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE — Eric Hueb- ncr. Ruth Schlesinger. LAW AND GOVERNMENT CAMP — Terry Hen- don, Phyllis Roden and Kim Whalin. All around Indiana different organizations were sponsoring a variety of camps, institutes and programs for high school students during the summer. Governmental programs such as Law and Government Career Camp, Girls’ and Boys’ State, and Student Leadership showed high school students the HOWS and WHYS of state and local government. The other camps ranged from subjects such as engineering and foreign language overseas programs to football and wrestling camps. Programs such as these prove to students that learning and practice in various subjects can be an enjoyable experience without the strict structured way of life as in a normal school atmosphere. BILLY MARTIN WRESTLING CAMP — Jeff Ruckman, Joe Mattingly, Tony Maneclang and Kerry Keith. OVERSEAS FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY — Tina Plinski, David Scott and Andrea Eucce. 1 2 Summer Institutes
