It is my hope that this has been an enjoyable year in which all of us have increased the characteristics of courtesy, determination, friendliness, and respect. We take justifiable pride in our modern school building and our instructional staff and equipment. But we must always consider the feelings, emotions, attitudes, and desires as most important in the learning climate of our school. The pupils are our main concern and challenge. On our understanding and aggressiveness will rest the hope of their future. The three strongest factors in America to help develop our youth are the Church, the Home, and the School. It is the duty and privilege of the Clergy, the Parents, and the Teachers to be ever ready and willing to influence, guide, and listen to our youth. Therefore, let us all work together in making this dream to excellence come true. DEDICATION JAMES R. RUSSELL The class of 1965 dedicates this year's Spotlight to James R. Russell. He helped us as class adviser in our Junior and Senior years. His qualities of understanding, patience, and willingness to help others have guided us in high school and have set a pattern for us to follow in later life. 3 EDfTOR S UESCAGE. As we look back through the years we first see two wide doors that welcomed us into the halls of Hammond Central and now as our time grows shorter these same two doors will close behind us leaving us to search for a new path in life. As we look back we shall see through these doors, memories we shall always cherish — we studied, had fun, experienced moments of trial and error. We shared the hopeless reality of examinations and dead- lines as well as experiences we shall never forget. Underclassmen who will once again enter these doors in the fall will keep up the high standards and will strive for improvement. As for us, the graduates, when these two doors close, we will go our separate ways using the knowledge we have gained here to reach for success. Our only hope is that this year's Spotlight will enable us to recapture the pleasant memories that shall always remain here. OASS MSTORY In the fall of 1961, the doors of Hammond Central School opened up to twenty-five energetic freshmen. We began our long journey toward graduation with Mr. Kaye as our advisor. Our class Officers were: President — Ned Cole, Vice-President — John Clasgens, Secre- tary — Jackie Petrie, and Treasurer — Bonnie Proven. Our projects consisted of a dance with Bryan Onley and the Monarchs and a very successful amateur show. We started our Sophomore year with twenty-one students. Our class advisors were: Mr. Leonard and Mr. Bariteau. Our class officers were: President — Phil Lavarnway, Vice-President — Grace Anne Shoulette, Secretary — Christy Drake, and Treasurer — Marguerite Hutton. Our treasurer grew with the addition of money from our magazine sales and the dances held throughout the year. Our Junior year consisted of fourteen students. Our class advisor was Mr. Russell and our class officers were: President — Linda Hollis- ter, Vice-President — Ned Cole, Secretary — Jackie Petrie, and Treas- urer — JoAnne Atkins. Even though our members had decreased since our Freshman year, we took on numerous projects. We held dances, sold candy, napkins and sweatshirts, held food sales and car washes but our biggest project was the Junior Prom with the theme Evergreen Eve . Our profits were very small but we had fun decorating. In our Senior year we welcomed the addition of two new mem- bers, Cindy Snyder and Linda Jolly, which increased our number to sixteen. Our class advisor was again Mr. Russell and our class officers were: President — Jo-Anne Atkins, Vice-President — Jackie Petrie, Secretary — Linda Jolly, and Treasurer — Grace Ann Shoulette. Our projects consisted of a car wash, a donkey basketball game, selling stationary and sweatshirts, and the publishing of the 1965 Spotlight. Now as the doors of Hammond Central are closing behind us, we would like to thank all the teachers who have helped and guided us through these years.
