The rest of the world had just settled down to a peaceful existence when the class of 61 burst into the halls of Hammond Central School, eager to start the journey through their high school years. No sooner had we arrived than we engaged in sports, music, and all other activities open to us. Our Freshman year brought much excitement and fun. Besides our selling of class pins and our dances, we had some members of our class selected to represent our school for St. Lawrence Valley League Band and Chorus. This year also marked the beginning of Dale Gosier’s and John Felt’s activity in baseball. Mrs. Campbell guided us as class advisor. Our Sophomore year saw us active in the social life atH. C. S. We sponsored a dance by Ted Curl which brought us a profit of $200, sold scotty dogs, and also magazines. John Felt and Dale Gosier made varsity squad in basketball. We also had some class members selected for valley league, Dan Phalen represented H. C. S. at Ithaca for F.F.A. Farm and Home Week. Carol Phalen went to Syracuse for a New York State F.H.A. meeting. Mrs. Campbell also was our class advisor for this year. Our Junior year of the class of ‘61 brought more activities, such as our dances, food sales, etc. Our biggest event in this year was our Junior Prom. Our theme was “ Enchanted Evening.” Not only was it very profitable but we had fun planning new ideas and putting them into use in our decorations. Dan Phalen and Ronnie Amyot made the varsity baseball team and also a few members were selected for St. Lawrence Valley League this year. Dan Phalen and Marvel Viau went to Ithaca for the F.F.A. Farm and Home Week and Shirley Jones went to Almira during this year to a New York State Future Homemakers of America Meeting. The student body voted one of our classmates, Pat Paddock, to represent our school as queen representative at the St. Lawrence County Fair for 1960. She came in fourth out of twenty five contestants. Our class is very proud of her achievement. For these three years, we had Victor Smithers for our class president. Mr. McCarty was our class advisor for this year. Finally, we reached the status of seniors with a class of twenty two. The big projects of this year were the publishing of this yearbook and the sponsoring of our senior play, ‘‘Hillbilly Weddin’.” Mrs. Hollis, our English teacher, directed our senior play through much work and preparation on her part. Other activities were the selling of stationery, selling pop and candy after home basketball games and our dances. Dan Phalen and Marvel Viau again journeyed to Ithaca for the F.F.A. Farm and Home Week. Suzanne Gibson, our senior class president, ventured to Rochester in December for All State Band there. There were also seniors picked to go to St. Lawrence Valley League this year. Those who have represented Ham- mond from our class throughout the years in this league have been: Carol Phalen, Elaine Dawley, Faye Langtry, Mary Langtry, Priscella Marsaw, Pat Paddock, Suzanne Gibson and Connie Dunn. The important event of our senior year was our trip to New York City and Washington, D.C. Mr. Toomey was our class advisor for this year. And now, looking back on our years atH.C.S., we must remember our teachers and advisors who have guided us through our high school careers. We hope they won’t forget us, for we’ll never forget them.
