Nancy Phalen Louine Hunneyman MEMORY, HITHER COME Memory, hither come, And tune your merry notes: And, while upon the wind Your music floats, IT1 pore upon the stream Where sighing lovers dream, And fish for fancies as they pass Within the watery glass IT1 drink of the clear stream, And hear the linnet's song, And there IT1 lie and dream The day along: And, when night comes, IT1 go To places fit for woe, Walking along the darkened valley With silent Melancholy. This is a book of memories. Memories tend to be enjoyable, since we fortunately are more likely to remember the happy experiences of life than those which have led to frustration. We would hope, too, that most of your school experiences have been enjoyable ones. One cannot however, live on memories. Mem- ories are valuable when they remind us of the deep commitments we have made, of the vision we have had concerning our place in life, and of the friends who have inspired us. Such memories can be a constant spur to accomplishment and to higher living. We hope that the memories induced by this book will be happy ones, but that they will also be reminders of that which is fine, and noble, and good in life. THE SENIOR CLASS Dedication IT IS AN HONOR FOR THE SENIOR CLASS TO DEDICATE THE 1960 “KEEPSAKE” TO MR. ROSS G. SCHILLACI, OUR VOCATIONAL-AGRICULTURE TEACHER. YOUR UNSELFISH DEVOTION TO AWAKENING AND DEVELOPING MECHANICAL SKILLS AT HAMMOND CEN- TRAL SCHOOL, YOUR PERSONAL PRIDE AND INTEREST IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF YOUR PUPILS AND YOUR GENIAL PERSONALITY HAVE BEEN DEEPLY APPREC- IATED, NOT ONLY BY THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF HAMMOND CENTRAL, BUT CITIZENS AS WELL, Hammond faculty and students suffered the loss of a friend with the passing of Charles Jones, husband of our kindergarten teacher, Ellen Jones. Charles Jones was born to William Elmer and Winifred Lottie Stevenson Jones on October 4, 1905, at Grass Lake. He attended schools at Grass Lake, Antwerp, Rock- well Creek, and Rossie. He worked as a farmhand and drove truck for the Jefferson County Highway Department. On June 14, 1938 he was married to Miss Ellen Gurnell in Spragueville by Reverend Daisy Harvey. On May 1, 1942 the Jones family moved to Hammond where they purchased the George Grant farm on the Cook Road. From 1954 until he was forced to retire because of ill health, Charles had worked for the town of Hammond. “Charlie with his pleasant manner and quiet good humor will long be remembered at H. C. As we grow older, years shrink from end- less obstacles to meaningless atoms of time, lived and lost. Remaining are only memories, mellowed in time, unbreakable limbs with a past which can be relived in fantasy alone. May the 1960 KEEPSAKE the product of this day’s toil, be the window in your future through which you keep today always alive. Math Science MR. TRERISE: MR. MCCARTHY: MR. FELT, MR. SCHILLACI: MRS. Ann Phalen was our President, Nancy Phalen was our Vice-President and Louine Hunneyman was Secretary-Treasurer. Bettina Brown was voted as a member of the Student Council. During the year we sold sweat shirts and Christmas candy. We had our first dance which was our first money making project. We started the year with seventeen members after we finally became Sophomores. Laurie Chaulker was a new class member. Louine Hunneyman was our President, Keith Stewart was Secretary-Treasurer. Our Student Council members were Nancy Phalen and John Hibbs. Mr. Bacher was our advisor that year. We had two dances and sold magazines to make money. We started our Junior Year with fourteen members. We lost Bettina Brown, Laurie Chaulker, Roger Backus and Cecil Rogers during our Soph- omore and Junior years. During the year we gained a new student David Stevens. Class officers for that year were Bernice Hunt, President; Carol Rogers, Vice-President; Keith Stewart, Secretary-Treasurer; Charles Gardner and John Hibbs became our Student Council members. Mr. Bacher was again our advisor. We took on such activities as selling coat hangers, candy and a paper drive. We had two dances. Then we took on the Junior Prom. Our theme was “Blue Hawaii”. It turned out to be a tremendous success. That year we received our class rings. Now it is 1959. We are a small class of twelve Seniors with Mr. Toomey as our advisor. Our class President is David Stevens, Vice- President is Ann Phalen; Secretary is Carol Rogers; Treasurer, Lois Hollister. We took on activities such as selling stationary and the year book. We have had one dance and plan to have a spaghetti dinner. And now, as all Seniors do in their last year, we are planning our Senior Trip to New York City. This has been our ultimate goal all through high school and now it doesn’t seem possible that the time is drawing near. We are all striving to raise funds for April. We the Class of 1960, at the conclusion of our high school education, deem it not only fitting and proper but necessary to bequeath some of our excellent, extraordinary, and invaluable possessions, traits, and characteristics to the lower-classmen and flustered, frustrated faculty, who have helped us in our times of trouble and times of joy. Article 1; Administration: Item: We leave a vote of thanks for their kind cooperation and understanding. Article II: Faculty: Item; We thank them for their tried efforts. Article III: Advisors: We thank them for helping us make our way to New York. Article IV: The said, outstanding class bequeaths the following to the lowly undergraduates. Item I Item II Item III Item IV Item V Item VI Item VII Item VIII Item IX Item X Item XI Item XII Yvette Amyot leaves her throwing arm to Elaine Dawley to use next year at play practice. Daniel Bickelhaupt leaves Mr. Warren Wisner with a bundle of NERVES. Charles Gardner leaves his wine, women and song to Dick Felt. JohnHibbs leaves his mother’s whistle to Stanley Williams. Lois Hollister leaves her golden locks to the three bears. Louine Hunneyman leaves her warm friendship to Sue Langtry. Ann Phalen leaves her sisterly love to Carol who deserves it. Keith Stewart leaves his romantic ways with boys coming home from the races to Pork Howie. And I, Bernice Hunt, feel that, for the best of my health, at the conclusion of this will, I should leave by the nearest exit. Lastly, I hereby appoint Mr. Toomey executor of this will, my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills made with me. In witness whereof, I have here unto subscribed my name the fourteenth of December in the year Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Nine. We, whose names are here to subscribe, do certify that on the fourteenth day of December. .Larksville Robinsville This document was witnessed by: N. R. Lark, Testator, D. G.
