GENERATION IN A HURRT The pace of 1965-1966 was fast, days and weeks whisked by and too soon term papers, research re- ports, and finals were upon us. Over all clocks and calendars marked time allotments for tests, classes, due dates for papers and projects, and athletic competition. Because of our consciousness of time and our striving to live within its limits we have been open called a generation in a hurry. Many tried to experience as much of lure as possible in the shortest amount of time, and yet, in the rush to express ourselves and our ideas, to discover the new and dwferent, to concentrate intently on our studies, we found time to laugh, to relax, to have PER! ODS OF CONCENTRA TION The ability to concentrate is often necessitated by the desire to achieve goals rangngjrom completing an assignment, to passing a coarse, to winning a basketball game. While concentration is essential to much of lje, it is probably the most dmlicult thing to do for any sustained period of time and almost impossible in a warm classroom after an all- night term paper writing session. When attention wanders things pass by without our notice and despite our most noble eforts, periods of concentration are very susceptible to moments ofdaydreaming. There is discovery in yhnding the correct class rooms on the yhrst day ofa new term, in learning new facts, ideas and concepts, in meeting new friends, and perhaps in Ending that you have never bqfore really noticed the beauty of the Hamline Mall on a warm fall ayiernoon. DISCO VERY OF THE NEW AND DIFFERENT EX PRESS! O OF Communicative expression is found in many varied forms and mediums. The exchange of ideas is found in classroom lectures and discussions, in dramatic forms such as the Mime, brought to us by Frans Reynders, and in the printed word of the Oracle. The various means of expression represent the diverse personalities of the Hamline community and give the dull moments oflje a bit more sparkle. 3 Ii OUR VIEWS AND IDEAS ,gi is W KK, K f.,t E , . ,gy Y '21 A.. Q43 kin.. 1 fi , 'rf'-v ri -K INTER VALS OF FUN AND RELAXA TION Education is not limited to the classroom and text- bookg there is nothing that can duplicate the ex- perience gained from laughing and having fun with others. Unforgettable memories occur during the color and excitement of Homecoming and Winter Weekend, happy chats during Friday ajdernoon cojjee hours, chess games in the Union, and within a group of friends gathered around a table in the snack bar. Times when pressure and stress is low and the atmosphere is easy help to make a little more livable. To Toussaint L,Ouverture William Wordsworth What manner of person was she? Devoted teacher, beloved colleague, candid friend, articulate citizen, irrepressible spirit, rational being, one of the Queens of Camelot. For how many sides may a gem be cut? How many reflections may ajewel have? She loved her students dearly. Alert to those who needed encouragement, available to those who sought guidance, appreciative of those who warranted praise, agitating to those who required prodding. Her tender-tough touch set gyroscopes for the course of many young lives . . . She would have youth drink from the river of life and to follow its course that they may know where it flows through parched deserts and lush valleys. Representatives are drawn from the individual living units in proportion to their numbers. Congress sponsors almost all social events on campus, including homecoming, winter weekend, and campus religious activities. In addition, Congress pro- poses a yearly budget to the president. One goal this year was better studentffaculty relations in policy-making. Six student-faculty parallel committees worked toward this task. Another problem during the year was the discussions on new residence housing. A first for Congress was its membership in the Inter-college Coordinating Committee flC3j, of which Hamline's Steve Frantzich, former Con- gress President, became president. ,io Wm ... 7' L , i , .
