Some of us will continue our education, and some will notg but none of us will ever forget the good times we had in Hamlin High. We realize that the time has come for us to accept the challenge of making our own way in the world. Whatever the future holds for each of us is unknown, but nothing will ever change the memories we have of one another. Browning once said, I would rather aim at a million and miss it a unit then to aim at a hundred and make itf' Many of the accomplishments reflected in this book are the results of aiming at the high mark. I urge you who are graduating and you who are returning to our schools next year to strive to make the best investment of your time, your talent and your energy. To develop a great scientific discovery, to paint a great picture, to write an im- mortal poem, to become a minister, or a famous general -- to do anything great requires time, patience, and perseverance. These things are done by degrees, HLittle by Little.H Milton did not write HParadise Lostu at a sitting, nor did Shakespeare compose HHamletH in a day. Inservice for faculty and registration for students begins the l98l-82 Hamlin I.S.D. school year. The date is August 24-26, l98l. The following day, classes begin. Football and volleyball workouts take up most of the time. Of course, football season involves more than the players and coaches. The members of the band practice not only for every Friday night performance, but for marching competition, also. Pep rallies -- with enthusiastic cheerleaders, run-through signs provided by classes, clubs, and organizations, and pennants sold by the junior class -- are given every Friday at 3:00 in the school auditorium. Early in the year DECA students are placed in various busi- nesses in town for on-the-job training and employment after re- ceiving classroom instruction. Several of the members also par- ticipate in DECA contests during the year. September 7 brings the first holiday, Labor Day. School re- sumes on the 8th, and school pictures are taken on the 9th. with homecoming approaching October 9, preparations for all activities must begin. The game Friday night against Merkel gives Hamlin another victory. Half-time activities include the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Coming Home Queen, and the l98l Homecoming Dedication recipient. A tea is held after the game in the high school cafeteria for all the exes. All four classes enter floats in the parade held on Saturday at lO:0O a.m. Early in the after- noon of the same day, the business meeting wraps up the homecom- ing festivities. Tonight I would like to think of graduation as a be- ginning of a journey and to imagine for a moment that before us lie several possible roads that will take us to our eventual destination. We will have to make many deci- 4 sions, and the decisions will sometimes be very difficult. Looks are often deceiving, often two roads will look about the same, and we won't know which road to take ,..... We must think carefully, examine the evi- dence, and read the signs be- fore making our decisions. The result may make all the difference. Sharon Ford, Salutatorian, gave the welcoming address: It is with great pleasure, a sense of pride, and a wee bit of sorrow that I welcome you to the graduating exercises of 1982. On this important occasion I am reminded of John Donne's famous words when he said, 'No man is an island entire of itselfg every man is a piece of the conti- nent, a part of the main.' He beautifully states that all men are interdependent on each other. We all depend on each other for our material possessions, for comfort, for strength and for achieve- ment . . . The year is now complete and can never be changed but can be remembered through the pages of this book. In the tomorrows when the 1982 PIPER is opened, I hope that the memories of today are recalled with pleasant thoughts and even a few joyful tears. As editor of the '82 PIPER, I would like to thank the outstanding PIPER staff. Your dedication and hard work on this annual will be appreciated by all those to whom it brings memories. A special thanks goes to Stevie Reynolds for his photography. Many times we called of Stevie for his help, and he always helped us out. To the advertisers, I say thank youii for your sup- port. It is nice to know that there are people in our community who are supportive of the school and its activities. I thank the students, faculty, administrators, and school board for their cooperation that has made the production of this annual an enjoyable task. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank Ms. Geneva Carter, our advisor, for all the time, thought, and hard work she has given the annual.
