'n D Board of Education Works to xv ' It is my hope that as you spend many happy hours with this edition of the Piper you will take time to rejoice that you live in a nation where free public education is possible. I hope that you will realize that in very few nations of the world are scenes such as those depicted in this book possible. In our nation the goal underlying our educational system is to provide an equal chance for all, to educate each to rise to his or her highest potential and take a responsible position in society. It is my hope that each individual will take from this school a knowledge and appreciation of the dedication and sacrifice that has gone into the protection and continuation of our free educational system and our nation. There are now many detractors from our system and those who would destroy the works of many generations. I believe, as Lincoln said in his Cooper Union speech on February 27, 1860, Ulf destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be the author and the nnisher. As a Nation of Free Nlen, we must live through all times, or die by suicide. We are looking to you, the students pictured in this yearbook, to prevent this from happening. fs 7 wlauttlitiii, Ol, Paul Whitton, Jr. 1980-81 Board of Trustees Superintendent fe- if an wfzcf Members are: Sam Mack Hodges CVPD, James Rodgers, Mrs. Joe Hymer CSec.l, W.T. Use your time wisely in school. Learn what you can, all that you can, so that your mind is a storehouse of knowledge. Enjoy these days in school, days that are spent with friends and family. These days can never be repeated, so make the best of them. As people get older Cwe all doi they look back on their formative years. It doesn't matter if they were good or bad, what does matter is that each person made his own destiny. People say, Ulf I could go back with the knowledge I have now, I would be better. Don't go through life with that attitude or say HI wish I had tried harder. Try now! Work now! Do it this time! For some, the learning game is about over, as is the game of growing up. It is now time for you to be grown up and step into the work-a-day world. The learning process never ceases. You must learn ever day to survive the pressures of today's world. Richard Evans by electing him our 1981 Teacher-of-the- Year. Nlr. Evans was a new attraction becoming a big hit here after teaching for only one year. lVlr. Evans teaches band in the fifth through twelfth grades as well as directing the Piper Nlarching Green, the high school stage band, and the two annual concerts. He and his wife, Leigh, are active members of the First Baptist church. They have a daughter, Erin, who is two years old. Not only has he been successful in his school and church work, but Mr. Evans has become a hit in the community. Even though he gets angry with the band at times lhe usually has a good reasonl, the students admire and respect Mr. Evans. Yes, he has made a great contribution to our school and community, we hope he continues to do so for years to come. Hamlin High is proud to present Mr. Richard Evans as Teacher-of- the-Year. They were: Lorna Jeffrey, Melissa Kiser, Arlieta Thomas, Kathy Prewit, LaEtta Scifres, Susan Benningfield, Scott Lamphere, Mark Young, Mike Davis, and Travis Lain. 97 CGIVIIVIEIXICEIVIENT Mike Davis, Salutatorian, gave the welcome. Wlhousands of years ago, God welcomed man into the new world He had created . . . As God welcomed man, so our parents welcomed us into a world that would prove to be a challenge to us as well . . . And only a short twelve years ago, we were welcomed into a school system where our desire for learning could begin to be satisfied . . . Now it is our turn to welcome you-family, faculty, and friendsvto this celebration . . . Invocation Pledge of Allegiance Scripture Reading Welcome Intro. of Speaker Speaker Class Gift Farewell Benediction Piper Song PROGRAM Arlieta Thomas Susan Benningfield Lorna Jeffrey Melissa Kiser Mike Davis Travis Lain Willard Tate Kathy Prewit Mark Young LaEtta Scifres Scott Lamphere 98 Mark Young, Valedictorian, gave the farewell. ll . . . This is the very last time that we will all be together . . . For we have now walked across this stage and joined a huge dedicated group of former students and Piper fans . . . When I think of all of our successes and all of our failures. I am reminded of a phrase by John Gray. lWhat could be more important in life than to know in our hearts that in everything we have tried to do, we have done our very best! . . . I am proud to be Valedictorian of this class, not because of personal honor or gain, but because I love each student and realize that each is an outstanding and special individual in hisfher own way. . . It is my fervent hope and prayer that when my short life is over that I may see all of these 54 Pied Pipers in Heaven. The Class of 1981 enjoyed a busy, but wonderful graduation. On Sunday, May 24, the Hamlin Ministerial Alliance conducted the first Baccalaureate service held in years. The week climaxed on Friday, May 29, when 54 seniors received their diplomas.
