EVENTFUL Spirit week, the week preceding Homecoming, was a show of spirit and enthusiasm among all the classes. The senior class showed their spirit and cooperation by having all of the seniors dress in similar costumes vary- ing on the set theme. There was a large percent of each class that par- ticipated this year. Overall, the atmo- sphere was fun and exciting all week. This year’s themes were the follow- ing: Monday-T-shirt and hat day, Tuesday-Gatsby Day, Wednesday-ln- side-out and Backwards Day, Thurs- day-Professional Day, and Friday- Blue and White Day. Everyone has a blast at the pep rally . . . Jim and Pete have a colorful way of chasing the blues away . . . Eat your heart out Go Go’s . . . Karen puts best boot forward . . . Sophomore pride keeps blimp high . . . “STRIPES” TOGAS Although many students dressed in the scheduled manner, there were a number of variations from the theme. Instead of dressing in the style of the 1920’s on Tuesday, the majority of students dressed as punk rockers changing the theme entire- ly. On Wednesday, the theme was slightly alternat- ed by members of the senior class. Rather than putting clothes on backwards, the seniors reversed roles; the boys dressed as girls, and the girls as boys. On Thursday, the senior girls dressed as ladies of the evening and the boys were their man- agers. 1 V 1 Vik. Punkers rocked high school . . . Senior girls do it up like old pros . . . Cindy and company patrol the cafeteria . . . All wrapped up in Spirit . . . On Friday, Blue and White Day, there was also a deviation of theme. Freshmen wore pajamas, soph- omores dressed in their “Class of ’84” baseball caps, the juniors tripped in togas, and the seniors donned Army uniforms. Fashioned after the movie “Stripes”, the seniors marched into the pep rally to the hit theme song of their favorite movie. The band played, and the color guard performed their routine to “Birdland”. The Homecoming King and Queen were announced with their court, and each class cheered their own cheer. The sophomores displayed the blimp, awarded to them in the suc- cessful magazine drive. Homecoming Weekend commenced early at the Senior Class’s Pancake Breakfast in the Winthrop School. At 8:00 a.m., the class floats, homecoming court, cheer- leaders, and “Super Band” gathered at Harvest Market beginning their trek to the high school. CLASS of ' 85 Everyone assembles for the big parade . . . Soph- omores go ape . . . This freshman didn’t miss the bus . . . J.V. Cheerleaders openly display their spirit . . . Weeks of undone homework and hard- work, culminated with the reviewing of the four class floats. Each float portrays the theme of, “The Future with Remem- brance of the Past”. The Freshmen con- structed a Flying Bus, Sophomores, a Prehistoric Dwelling, the Juniors, a Fer- ris Wheel, turning toward the future, and the Seniors portrayed, the “Times of our Lives”. f FLOATS . . . BUSES . . . SOCCER FOOTBALL Upon arrival at the High School, the 1981 Homecom- ing Parade came to a halt. At 10:00 a.m., the annual Hamilton-Wenham vs. Pingree soccer game began, followed by the football game at 1:30. After an out- standing halftime performance by the band, the class floats circled the track, and the winners were an- nounced. While each class won a catagory, the Junior class won the trophy for the best overall float. Next, surrounded by their court, the King and Queen were officially crowned. After the football game an alumni reception was held, and in the evening, a dance fea- turing Legacy, ended the long but eventful week. Chris is sleeping high . . . Don’t stop now . . . Drum Major Jeff Vandell and Color Guard Cap- tain Robbie Nelson, led the band to a superb performance in the band show at the University of Lowell. Although the band will be losing a lot of seniors this year, Mr. Lassonde will maintain a high standard of performance in the future. Captions: Another A1 Hirt . . . Beat those drums . . . GENERALS TAKE The Generals’ Football team proved to be what many people thought was the best team in the Cape Ann League this year. Al- though they started slow and were plagued by injuries the first half of the season, they turned it on in the second half by winning 4 games and tying 1, while losing to none. Led by captain David Burnham, quarterback Gelean Campbell, and running back Chris Sullivan the Generals defeated Amesbury 26 to 6 on Homecoming Day. They also ended a successful season with the Silver Crush” defense dominating the Ipswich Tigers with a 16 to 0 victory, giving the Generals an overall record of 5-4-1. The girls added pep and enthusiasm to the crowd during the football games. At the fall cheering com- petition, their efforts were rewarded when they were awarded the first place trophy in the Cape Ann League. Led by co-cap- tains Mary Johnson and Eliza- beth Broughton, the team thrived on spirit and hard work. Elected to the All-Star team were senior, Jean Howatt and junior, Elizabeth Broughton. By losing 6 seniors to graduation, the 1982 season will be a rebuilding one. The Bugs finished with a record of 5 wins, 4 ties, and 3 losses. They had three Ladybugs qualify for the CAL All Star Team who were, Suzanne Bealieu (captain). Amber Millett, and Tricia Curry. With the combination of coach Linda Frick and the “Bugs”, the team led the league in enthusiasm and spirit. A major feat was tying Newburyport twice, in the last minute of the game, and again in the last minute of overtime. The many Juniors on the team, and the talent of the J.V. team, looks very prom- ising for next year. SOCCER SHOOTS FOR SUCCESS Once again the Varsity Soccer Team battled to a successful season, winning the Cape Ann League Eastern division title, and earning a berth in the state tournament. Captains Tim As- kew, Mark Clark, and Dave Flint led the team with their positive attitudes, determina- tion, and hard-work to a fine 4-1 record. Seniors Mark Clark and John Stookey were select- ed as all-league members, and Tim Askew was selected as a member of the all-star team. The team also posted their first victory over powerful Masco. The final record showed a tally of 5 wins, 6 losses, and 7 ties. Sound Off also runs personality fea- tures on teachers and students at the Regional as well as, stories about current trends and fads evident among students. In an effort to increase student awareness, the paper tried to assert itself this year by adressing controver- sial issues at the regional. Although the stu- dent body and Administration did not always accept these viewpoints and perspectives, they often found thought-provoking articles in this year’s Sound Off. Sound Off’s staff in- cludes; Row 1: Cathy Pantano (editor-in- chief), Josh Berg, John Grebe, Bruce Simp- son, Andy McKenna, Gerry Cooley, Julie Towne; Row 2: Leslie McKenna, Kelly Mar- chetti. SOUND OFF Note From the Editor: Pressured by limited hours and few hands, we tried to make this record indicative of your years at the Region- al. Although most of the “staff” pic- tured, helped in producing this year- book, as did many others in small ways I must publicly thank Kristin Haid, Julie Haraden and Amber Mil- lett for their long hard hours after the 3:30 bus had come and gone. Thanks to Liz Meyer, Susan Homer, Karen Tompkins, and Dolores Anderson for the art work, giving our yearbook a theme. — Michele Pearlstein. Competing six times a year, the math team meets with teams from other schools as each stu- dent tries to defy the laws of probability and obtain a perfect score of eighteen. The Math Team also competes in New England and New York State Compatitions, tests given at the Regional periodically through- out the year, and compared to thows teams throughout the Northeast. In keeping up with the tradition, the Hamilton-Wen- ham Regional High School Mathematics Team remained a dominating force in its league, consistantly and convincingly scoring well in all meets. The purpose of the Physics Club has always been somewhat ob- scure, although sometimes de- fined as the physical reality through physical pleasure. Un- der the direction of fearless leader. In addition to these, the NHS will be trying to have a more active role in the school, and community. The first at- tempt at this came earlier in the year when our officers and the officers of the Beverly NHS met and compare and contrasted goals and admission procedures - in general, to just share ideas. The NHS hopes to be involved in precedent setting activities, such as the meeting with Bever- ly to improve the NHS in the years to come. STUDENT GOVERNMENT With its new advisor, Mr. Aicta, the 1981-82 Student Govern- ment plunged into a plethora of new, innovative activities. These activities include a detailed in- vestigation of rank-in-class and election processes, an advisory council to the school committee, extensive charter revisions, and a tea fo the new superintendent, Patricia Alger. Eield trips and guest speakers are planned in the future of the club. M istTiast.. As football season draws to an end, the marching Band disposes of the lower brass instruments and adds some French horns, a basoon, an oboe or two, and twice as many flutes and clarinets, and emerges as the Concert Band. Building a repetoire of pieces, the band per- forms at the annual music-a-thon held every Spring. In addition to the seasonal concerts held at the Regional, the Concert Band also introduces graduation ceremonies with the classic Pomp and Cir- cumstance. CONCERT BAND Adding dance music to the music department is the Jazz Band. Dem- onstrating their talents in band, stu- dents may audition for a spot in the elite dance band. In addition to performances in concerts and the music-a-thon. Jazz Band performs many “gigs” outside of school. This past year Jazz Band has per- formed at the Annual Touchdown Club Banquet, The Telethon for Cerebral Palsy, and at a Fireman’s Ball. JAZZ BAND CONCERT CHOIR Like the bands, Concert Choir performs at the Holiday con- cert, The Pops concert, and The Spring concerts. After many long hours of labor, the hit musical OKLAHOMA! arrived at the Ferrini Auditorium on May 15-16. The show was the first to ever receive a standing ovation for both performances as well as to be sold out for two nights in a row. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Lassonde, the cast and crew delivered one of the best musicals in recent school history. Heidi Clark and Craig Jordan performed the leads as Laurie and Curly in the special style typical of Rogers and Hammerstein musicals. Emily Thompson and Kurt Klebe, as Ado Annie and Will Parker, supported the show with finesse. Greg Shultz, alias Jud Frye, balanced the good vs. evil theme. He portrayed the misguided farm hand whose baritone voice filled the auditorium when he sang, “Poor Jud is Dead”. Between the hard work of the set crew, headed by Art Oberheim, the actors with their unique talent, and the pit band who added the final touch, OKLAHOMA! resulted in a smashing success. The defending State Champions were ham- pered by several injuries during the season, but still managed to maintain an intense level of competition throughtout the sea- son. Playing on a new field for the 81 season, the Ladybugs, led by All Leaguers Betsy McCoy and Bev Agrella, and All- Star Dacia Clayton, played as a unit with an overwhelming amount of spirit. ' H, , TRACKSTERS TRY 22 FOR THE TOP I I Battling to second place in the CAL meet, the 1981 Girls’ Track Team finished a strong season with a record of 6-3. A promising group of under- classmen backed a solid corps of re- turning seniors led by Mary Willcox, Kerri Longval, and Julia Bonazoli. The speed of Maria Stolle and Teresa Meyer, the endurance of Regina Gauthier, Kate Rideout, and Rhonda Wilson, and the jumping of Aynn Chiary paced the team throughout the season. With all this youth and talent, the Girls’ Track Team looks forward to another exciting and suc- cessful season in 1982. Captained by Dick Lyons, Joe Shea, and Dave Pereira, the track team illustrated many individual talents. Cap- tain Dick Lyons set a new school high jump rec ord at 6’5”, a CAL meet record at 6’31 2” and placed second in the Class C State meet. Other outstanding members were Dave Day who improved the most during the season and Captain Dave Pereira and Joe Shea. Due to impressive spirit the team should be commended for their efforts. Row 1. The Ladybugs, led by co-cap- tains Winny Wilson and Martha Bonneville finished the season with a record of five wins and six losses. Although the Ladybugs had not been as victorious as anticipated, the girls worked cooperatively and ardently , greatly strenght- ening and improving their tennis skills. During the course of the season, a few of the girls represented the team in the CAL tournament. These girls. Missy Brown. Leslie Mac- Dougall, Martha Bonneville, and Winny Wilson dis- played a commendable performance against their tough opponents. This year’s awards for MVP and most im- proved were presented to freshman Missy Brown and senior Martha Bonneville respectively. While John Hawke and Neil Hents- chel, the team’s only seniors gave the team the benefit of their experiences, it was not enough to pull the netmen past the 500 mark. Brian Murphy and Alan Beaulieu played valiantly, but were out matched by their c ounterparts on opposing teams. The doubles improved their skill and tac- tics as was evidenced in thier play in the CAL Tournament, where John Hawke and Sean Aulson lost the semi-finals in a tough match. This match was typical of the play and out- come of many of the matches played during the season. The team lost six matches by a 2-3 score and in four of the six losses there was a three set match. With the experience gained, the boys are looking forward to reversing last sea- son’s record. FAULTY Are you ready, Bobby? . . . Don does it . Neil plants one . . . John doubts John . .
