PERSEVERAN CE Stiff and erect, now one-two steps forward, a pause and then high into the air. My thoughts were jumlnled in my mind. I couIdn,t think. Then, with the suddenness of the first hell, my thoughts arranged them- selves like toy soldiers with the main idea as majorette. I was up in the air, slowly arching my Iuody. Get your legs together! Quick now, douhle up and turn over. Good Inoyl Down we go, straight and swift as an arrow and into the water. Hurrah! I had sat for weelcs by the side of the pool, watching the other hoys diving off the hoard and doing a somersault in mid-air. The thought of doing that myself terrified me. Vvhat would happen if I didn't complete the turn in the air? Suppose I slipped off the hoard? These thoughts ran thru my mind. Vvell, one day I decided to try it. Shaking with fear, I approached the diving hoard. Gne fellow was getting ready to dive. He ran down and toolc to the air like a hird. With a definite twist, he Hipped his hody around and slipped into the water. Now why couIdn't I do something like that? I walked up to the steps and climbed onto the hoard. I braced myself and looked toward the pool out of the corner of my eye. Brrl VVeIl, here goes nothing. I hohhled down the hoard and was ahout to spring into the air, when I changed my mind. But I had already left the hoard. Ch, for some terra-firma. Vvhat was I doing up here? Splash! I wasn't up there any longer. I landed Hat on my face in the water. Pulling myself out of the pool, I laughed at my foolish attempt. I went hack to the hoard and tried it once more. I cIidn't do very well, hut I tried again and again and once more. Then I stood on the hoard, confident, and told myself I'm going to do it this time. I dove off the hoard and did it. Bursting with pride, I walked over and joined the group of hoys around the hoard and joined them. They made room for me and accepted me without comment. I had made the grade!
