It means the year of our graduation, and the sesquicentennial of the State of Ohio. Whether or not Ohio has been in the Union for 150 years is beside the point, but we know the Mother of Presidents has done her share to be among the most illustrious of the forty-eight states. For us 1953 means the parting of our ways. Some of us plan to go to college, while the world conditions mean Government service for many in the Air Force, Ohio's history is full of enchantment. How the Ottawas, lriquois, Miamis and Algonquins lived in this area of 41,222 square miles is part of our heritage. The Mound Builders were the most famous of the tribes who roamed over this land long before the white man. For us 1953 means the parting of our ways, some of us plan to go to college, while the world conditions mean government service for many in the Air Force, Army, Navy, or lX'larines. The 1953 Hamiltonian gives the story of our happy years together. lVlany of us started to school in 1941 when the Second World War led to our international participation. During these twelve years the world has never known real peace. 1953 marks the beginning of the Eisenhower administration, the Coronation of England's Queen Elizabeth ll, and the end of Russia's dictator, Josef Stalin. As the years go on, it is our hope that we can be as proud of our record as Ohioans have reason to be proud of our State's past. May we leave our Alma Mater with an earnest desire to give honor to ourselves, our country and the world at large. THE CLASS OF NINETEEN T lUNDRED FIFTY-THREE. -fi . ,aefigtii ii '-A, 'L ' - fv x 4 ul THE GREAT SEAL OF OHIO When Ohio was first admitted to the Union the Secretary of State, William Creighton, used his private seal for state papers. One night in the early part of 1930, Creighton with other men of affairs, met at Worthington's home near Chillicothe to discuss matters pertaining to the development of the state. Among the subjects discussed in the all-night session was the question of the state seal. ln the morning, before separating, they lingered on the south lawn of the home just as the sun rose behind Mt. Logan. It was a magnificent scene and Creighton inspired by its beauty, remarked: 'AThe Rising Sun of a New State. This was the birth of our great seal. The arrow and sheafs were after-thoughts. I
