It means the year of our graduation, and the sesquicentennial of the State of Ohio. Whether or not Ohio has been in the Union for 150 years is beside the point, but we know the Mother of Presidents has done her share to be among the most illustrious of the forty-eight states. For us 1953 means the parting of our ways. Some of us plan to go to college, while the world conditions mean Government service for many in the Air Force, Ohio's history is full of enchantment. How the Ottawas, lriquois, Miamis and Algonquins lived in this area of 41,222 square miles is part of our heritage. The Mound Builders were the most famous of the tribes who roamed over this land long before the white man. For us 1953 means the parting of our ways, some of us plan to go to college, while the world conditions mean government service for many in the Air Force, Army, Navy, or lX'larines. The 1953 Hamiltonian gives the story of our happy years together. lVlany of us started to school in 1941 when the Second World War led to our international participation. During these twelve years the world has never known real peace. 1953 marks the beginning of the Eisenhower administration, the Coronation of England's Queen Elizabeth ll, and the end of Russia's dictator, Josef Stalin. As the years go on, it is our hope that we can be as proud of our record as Ohioans have reason to be proud of our State's past. May we leave our Alma Mater with an earnest desire to give honor to ourselves, our country and the world at large. THE CLASS OF NINETEEN T lUNDRED FIFTY-THREE. -fi . ,aefigtii ii '-A, 'L ' - fv x 4 ul THE GREAT SEAL OF OHIO When Ohio was first admitted to the Union the Secretary of State, William Creighton, used his private seal for state papers. One night in the early part of 1930, Creighton with other men of affairs, met at Worthington's home near Chillicothe to discuss matters pertaining to the development of the state. Among the subjects discussed in the all-night session was the question of the state seal. ln the morning, before separating, they lingered on the south lawn of the home just as the sun rose behind Mt. Logan. It was a magnificent scene and Creighton inspired by its beauty, remarked: 'AThe Rising Sun of a New State. This was the birth of our great seal. The arrow and sheafs were after-thoughts. It is difficult to give credit to all those who have made the annual possible. To finance the annual many of the group sold candy, pop and popcorn which made a sacrifice when interesting games were going on. An ex- cerpt from the adopting resolution passed by the General Assembly in 1904 reads: Events always have their immediate cause, and that which immediately leads to the adoption of this flower as our state emblem was the love for it by our lamented McKinley. To him it was a daily companion . . . Then for its beauty, its fragrance and its Htness, let it be adopted as the state flower of Ohio, and let the action of its adoption be to the memory of William McKinley. May the scarlet carnation as our state flower emulate us all to deeds that will represent the good that is within us. N ine 1803 1953 FACULTY , -in R. FRANCE, DIANA TAYLOR B.A. Ohio State U. WIDMAYER ..Ray,, A real dare-devil November 14 Science Club 3 Football 1 1 803 There were sixty-six very proud but a little frightened seventh graders who entered the front doors of Hamilton Township High School in September of 1947. There wasn't much activity for us in our junior High years although some of the boys went out for football and basketball, twenty- three in football, and fourteen in basketball. We chose Mollie Heiny, Dollie Pearce, Mary Haynes, and Mary Stover as our junior High cheerleaders. Mollie Heiny and Bill Becker were chosen as the most outstanding boy and girl. At our graduation Lois Runkle had the honor of being our Valedictorian with Mollie Heiny as our Salutatorian. In our Freshman year we had a little more responsibility. We elected class officers for the first time. They were, President-Dick Potts, Vice-President-Tom Becker, Secretary- Bill Becker, and Treasurer-Lee Cook. Our Student Council representatives were Frances Moore and Dick Kreachbaum. Many of the boys were privileged to be on the Junior High football and basketball teams. Mollie Heiny, Dollie Pearce, Mary Haynes, and Mary Stover were again our cheer leaders for both sports. There were also members of our class in the Latin Club and on the Library staff. Several of the boys joined the Junior Hi-Y Club. ln our Sophomore year we were more active than before. The class officers were, President- Shirley Straight, Vice-President-Dick Potts, Secretary-Mary Ann Haynes, and Treasurer- Oliver Kirk. Our Student Council representa- tives were Iack Davis and Hilda Reed. Again our boys participated in such sports as football, baseball, basketball, and track. We were hon- ored that year by having Mollie Heiny, in the football queen's court. She was escorted by Sam Hedrick. Mary Stover was on the basket- ball queen's court. Roger Allen was her escort. Mary Haynes, Mary Stover, Dollie Pearce, and Mollie Heiny were our Reserve football cheer- leaders, and Phil Meteer was one of the Varsity football cheerleaders and was one of the Reserve basketball cheerleaders. For the first time the girls were allowed to join the C. A. A. In our Junior year we were looked up to by the lower grades. Class Officers were: Presi- dent-Dick Beard, Vice-President-Shirley Cor- don, Secretary-Hilda Reed, Treasurer-Mollie Heiny. Student Council representatives were Hilda Reed, Dick Kreachbaum, and Dollie Pearce. This was the first year that Honor Society members were chosen from our class. They were Lois Runkle, Shirley Straight, Mary Helsel, Hilda Reed, Mollie Heiny, Rose Schull, Sherman Smith, Dollie Pearce, Roger Allen and Dick Potts. That year our class made its first attempt at a class play. We chose The Poor Nut directed by Mrs. Diana France. Leading parts were played by Lynn Crawford, Mary Helsel, Patty Forshey, and other smaller parts SENIOR CLASS HISTORY were played by Roger Allen, Dick Potts, Phil Meteer, Dick Beard, Joe Neiman, David Fields, Shirley Cordon, Mary Stover, Keith Harden, Donna Neidigli, Bob Mallon, and Elwood Perry. Student Directors were Myrle Cox and Cora Bethel. Two of the boys, Lawrence Hayes and Dick Beard got Varsity letters in basketball, also Bob Mallon, Keith Harden, Cletus Bond, Bill Becker, Roger Allen, and Arnold Lyerly re- ceived Varsity football letters. Our class was represented in the football queenys court by Shirley Cordon, escorted by Dick Potts, and Mary Haynes, escorted by Dick Kreachbaum. In the basketball queen's court were Barbara Jacob, escorted by Lynn Crawford, and Myrle Cox, escorted by Keith Harden. We were proud to have Mollie Heiny, Mary Stover, Dollie Pearce and Mary Haynes as our Varsity cheer- leaders for both football and basketball. That year most of us jointed the Future Teachers, Hi-Y. Tri-Hi-Y. We gave a Junior-Senior Ban- quet and dance at the Fiesta Club. This, our Senior year, will remain in our memories forever. There were sixty-eight in our class. Our class officers were President-Roger Allen, Vice President-Dick Kreachbaum, Secre- tary-Myrle Cox and Treasurer-Keith Harden. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and co-operated with us in making our annual a success. We, The Senior Class of 1953, would like to thank our parents, teachers, principal and super- intendent for helping us through our school years at Hamilton Township High School. The Brat Hlaniee Nagel , Naomi Boals, has a sweet time having her parents Mr. and Mrs. Nagel , Bob Mallon and Hilda Reed. do her bidding. They are really spoiling her but cannot see this so they worry about her and hover over her, because they think she is nervous Everytime she wants anything she throws a tantrum, and her father rushes out to buy it for her. VVhcn it appears that they are buying her a boy friend she finally sees the light. It is an interesting and hilarious replica of our happy high school days. As I landed on the surface of Mars I was surprised to find that the cities are all underground. Miss Dolly Pearce, acting as official receptionist directed me to the city of Hardenville where Keith Har- den, the founder, gave me the key to the city. Since I have the key, it should be fun to go on a tour about the city. I am off to a good time. As I am walking along I see a new 1963 Cadillac coming my way. When it stopped I found that it is my old classmate, Harold Mitchell. He is now the owner of the greatest underground cir- cus in space. He gave me a free ticket and told me to come for the afternoon show. Waving goodbye I went on my way. Wait, what's this coming down the street? What strange creatures they are. They look familiar, but yet they could come from Mars. Upon inquiry I found out that they were none other than Nlollie Heiny and Hilda Reed, the bearded ladies, who are now performing with the circus in town. Now this really looks like fun, so I am off to see the circus. On my way I met Mary Lou Helsel, who is now a hair stylist for Loy Bish, the multi-mil- lionaire. She told me that the two Becker boys, Bill and Tom, are playing with the spacetrotters. Mary Dennis is now the heavy-weight boxing champion, and Arnold Lyerly is the most famous baby-sitter on Mars. Jim Shephard is the owner of a mink ranch and .Ioe Neimann has found a gold mine. Say- ing goodbye to Mary I went into a little shop to collect some souvenirs. As I was coming out of the shop I saw Barbara Jacobs and Shirley Gordon playing cops and rob- bers around the First National Space Bank. Hot on their trail was detective Ra Widmayer. He informed me that he was also Ilooking for a bookie by the name of Don Robinson, alias Don the Dope Peddler. On down the street is CLawrenceD Hayes's Diaper Service, COliverD Kirk's Bakery, and Southall's Barber Shop. By the way, Betty has invented a new space-cut. It is called the polka-dot cut. Looking to the north I see CMary AnnD Haynes Horsetraining Academy and CDickD Beard's Solon, which is located on First and Second Streets. Here comes the dog catcher. Well if it isn't Sam Hedrick. Asking what was new he told me about Ralph Wallace becoming Mr. America and Ierry Criner winning the Best Legs Contest for 1963. JoAnn Moats is the famous model for Robert Dixon, the wonderful Marzonian sculptor. Mary Singer has become a mechanic for the We fix everythingi' garage and Donna Bethel is -the best typist on Mars. As I was nearing the circus I had to say goodbye to Sam. Twenty-six As I entered the tent I saw some of my old friends from Hamilton. They were David Fields, the famous Roller Derby Star and Rose Schull, the first woman to become President of Mars. To my right I saw Ronnie Gibbs, the new opera singer for RKO. With him were John Greene, owner of Greeneis Green Pop Factory and Lois Runkle, President of the leading space univer- sity. As the show got underway I saw Sherman Smith the midget, Dick Kreachbaum, the offi- cial elephant washer, Bob Mallon, acting as Specks the clown, and Dick Potts swinging on the high trapeze. In the center ring was Fred Schutte, the magnificent sword swallower. About 9:30 P.M. I went to the Space Gar- dens where Cletus Bond and His Jazz Band were entertaining. As I entered, the owner, Phillip Meteer, upon recognizing me, came over to my table. He told me that Phyllis Meteer was the mother of twins and that Mary Stover is a stockcar driver. Roger Allen is playing with the Knock 'em down and Step on 'em football team, Peggy Narrance is still in there cheering for Uncle Rogg, and that Delores Lewis is a gravedigger. The floor show was about to begin so Phil ordered dinner for two. As the chorus came out I recognized the third from the end as Cora Bethel. Betty Arkley and Glenda Wilburn were next doing their bubble dancing act. The third act was Kenny Darst, who is now the second Johnny Ray. At intermission Don Angel brought our dinner to the table. Mary Brigner came around selling brushes for the Fuller Brush Company. I happened to comment on the food only to learn that Don Thompson was the chef. At the end of intermission Lynn Crawford, the famous yodeler, came out on the stage yodeling Give Me My Boots and My Saddlef, In the spotlight was the sensational new ballet dancer, Virginia Beaver. They told me that Frances Moore was coach- ing her own football team and that Marilyn Myers is a junk dealer. Don Sherman is a travel- ing salesman, Walter Eckert is an undertaker, and Dick Armstrong had become a choir leader. Betty said that patrolwoman Louise Courts had run in the garbage collector, Myrle Cox, for piling the junk she collected in her back yard. Don Clark is a hobo working for the Space Railroad, Mary Hunter has finally wound up in the poor house. Norma Wagner is an aviator, Naomi Boals is the famous deep sea diver, and that Ernest Walders has so much money that people call him the Miser on the Hill. As I was going out the door I saw the chamber maid, Shirley Straight. Back at the hotel that night I thought of all the wonderful things that had happened today. Goodnight. I 803 IN OUR BABY DAYS l.
