This Royal hack team's biggest prob- lem was not its opponents, but getting enough people to run against them. With only 16 runners and field event men on the team, the Royals always got their share of blue ribbons, but couldn't come up with enough red and white ribbons to win the big meets. Dave Parker was as he has been in the past three years, nothing less than spectacular. Dave broke the mile record with a time of 4:32 and the two miles record, which he already held, in a time of 9:57. The team had few retuming let- temlen and a lot of underclassmen. Only Dave Bill Schwartz, Richie Clark and Mike Stewart retumed from last year's team. The team had several outstanding underclassmen including Freslmien Fred Fontana and Tim Lay- ton. The Royals placed fifth in the con- ference meet, fifth in the county meet and finished second in the Royal Relays. 1 If the team would have had more depth in the running events, they would have been strong contenders in the conference and county meets. 'I'he team did have two individual winners in the conference meet with Dave Parker in the mile and Steve McLean in the shot put. V Coach Dave Enright also commented If H. . . , WAN .1 ,s,, ,,,. With more participation the team could retum to .sw-wif the status they once enjoyed. A successful handoff is made by Richie Clark to Tim Layton in the mile relay.
