Many outstanding individuals tumed in fine perfonnances during the eight game season. An 0-7-1 record was the overall sea- son outcome. According to Coach Mike Costlow it was a rewarding and good season. Paul Smoot led the team in passing and rushing while Todd Brown was the team's leading receiver. Coming up with the most tackles was jim Wilkins, an outstanding defensive lineman. Although there weren't many play- ers, the ones out there had a lot of abil- ityandsomedaytheywillmakegood varsity material, said Costlow. Freslmen get good experience practicing against the varsity. Dancing for the King's entertainment is the occu- pation of this harem girl, Chris Shipley. Assuming a hint of professionalism because of outside help, this year's spring musical, The King and In was a smashing success. The Rodgers and Hammerstein pro- duction was presented in the high school auditorium. , Outside help on the musical came from both Mr. John Stroh as stage direc- tor and Ms. Patti Lakes as pianist. Other directors included Ms. Sheila Rust in the vocal department, Mr. Wil- liam Newton as instrumental director, and Ms. jane Tuttle, who was in charge of artwork. The musical was based on the origi- nal play by Margaret Landon, Anna and the King of Siamf, The musical revolves around two ma- jor characters: The King of Siam fMike Mathisj and Anna fKarla Adamsonj a school teacher who came from England to teach the King's 65 children. VVhen the story begins, Anna and her son Louis fDoug Coverdalel are on the deck of the Chow Phya, which has just arrived in Siam. The music of the play begins as Anna and Louis, who are both afraid of the unknown, sing I VVhistle A Happy Tunef, From the moment the King meets Anna, he realizes that she is one who refuses to be pushed around and he is utterly astounded that a mere woman would dare talk back to, or question the word of the King of Siam. The two have many quarrels through- out the story, and the King ultimately begins to question his own ideas and traditions. As his respect for Anna grows, the King asks her, in a roundabout way, for advice on some international affairs. He really becomes worried when he learns that some outsiders think of him as ubarbarianf' Anna's advice is not to physically fight this, as the King suggests, but to civilize', the household to impress an upcoming guest, Sir Edward fSteve Lalioffj. The school teacher immediately goes about reforming the manners of the en- tire family as well as dressing all the women in European-style clothes. Sir Edward received a very favorable im- pression from Annais effort. After this, Anna and the King get along very well together, until something happens to trigger another argument. During the past year, two lovers have been meeting secretly. The girl, Tuptim fMarcie Rousej is a slave to the King. The boy is Lun Tha fjeff Gloverj. Al- though Anna knows about this couple, she blesses them for she herself had once been in love. VVhen the lovers can no longer stand to meet in secrecy, they decide to run away, but their flight is ill-fated. They are caught, Lun Tha is killed, and Tuptim is taken captive. When Tuptim is brought to the King, he sees no other alternative except to whip the girl. But Anna is present and she refuses to let Tuptim be punished. This incident makes a tremendous ar- gument break out between Anna and the King. The school teacher finally proclaims that she will teach there no more and will return to England as soon as possible. Before Anna leaves the country, the King becomes very sick. He is just about to die when he sends for Anna. He tells Anna that she has done much good for the children and begs her to stay there after he dies and educate his children. She finally agrees and the King dies. The King's oldest son, Chululong- korn tTim Mathis? then takes over as the King of Siam, and adopts some of his father's recent views. Other major characters in the musi- cal were Kralahome CRick Willoughbyl the head wife Lady Thiang, fMelanie Crayj and Phra Alack CFred Bargj. Seeking guidance, the King and his harem pray to Buddha. 1 l Mike Mathis and Karla Adamson confront each other with defiant looks. , ' Q,m-,RV 4 z 5 Q
