UPERI TE DE T If I were to think of the core of our Ameri- can Heritage, l would think of the tradition of challenge. Americans have been faced with challenge and change since the first settlers landed on the Eastern Seaboard. They faced that challenge, and made the changes. They established a country unique to the world--one populated by people from many lands whose cultures and philosophies blended 1IlIO a new tradition of freedom of choice, in- dependence, exploration and individual par- ticipation in government. When the westward movement began Americans met that challenge. They pushed back the frontier and settled again in a strange country, absorbing more new people and culture, adapting and changing as they met new challenges. They pushed back the frontier and settled again in a strange country absorbing more new people and cultures, adapting and changing as Wars have threatened to dissolve our great nation, but Americans have met the challenge Americans entered the 20th Century with gusto and faced the challenges of industrializa- tion mechanization scientific development and two global wars. They came face to face with the challenge of space and they are continuing to cope with its changes. It is good to be an American in the world of today.
