LEWIS RADER The Senior Council is the executive body of the Senior class. It consists of twelve members: the four officers of the class and the homeroom representatives, At the opening of the school year each homeroom elects a representative. These people meet and conduct the election of class officers whom the entire class nominates and elects. The Council meets every Wednesday activities period to discuss problems of the class. The Get-Together, Senior Play, Wasliington Trip, Class Night, Senior Ball, and graduation are examples of the interests of the group. The Council practices parliamentary procedure and the chairman of each meeting is either the president or the vice-president. The Seniors sponsored the second annual Senior Get-to-Getherf' This affair was a huge success socially. The Senior play, The Family Uprnzin, was presented. This proved to he both entertaining and profitable. The Washington trip was sponsored and one hundred and eighty- eight students enjoyed a delightful trip. The Council worked diligently on the Senior Ball, class night, and graduation. These projects require time, patience, planning, and the practical use of budgeting. RAYMOND R. AHR R.D. Washington Twp The air was tense with excitement. Silence reigned, or should I say rained. Slowly the seconds ticked away into oblivion. At last the tall hand of Big Ben reclined on the six making the total of 7:50 A.M. A shout split the stillness, igniting the pent up emotions of the senior students, resulting in an uncontrollable roar of cheers and applause, We're off. Washington bound, the students relaxed and sighed with relief since they realized they wouldn't be left behind. Hilarity came to the front in the form of poor jokes, wise cracks, singing UQ, and cheerful pranks. The sun? Never heard of it. At 9:40 we were forced to put on our sea legs, while our ferry proudly bore our worthy cargo across the mighty Delaware. After landing without any seasick casualties, proving that land lubbers can be sailors on a small scale, we went on to Baltimore. Here we lunched at the Southern Hotel. We left for Annapolis. Since it was raining quite hard, the Middies didn't parade, proving that even sailors hate to get wet. From Annapolis we went straight to Washington, arriving at Hotel Continental. After dinner the buses took us to the Congressional Library and Lincoln Memorial. From then on the time was ours-to sleep. Friday morning presented itself proudly in an array of sparkling rain drops. After an early breakfast we toured the city seeing the Washington Monument, Capitol, and many other interesting places. Of course we saw the printing of currency but who cares about money any- way. Time out for lunch and then more sight seeing. Completely satisfied we returned to the hotel for dinner. Then to the theatre, where we had the unexpected pleasure of having Fred Waring and his orchestra on the stage. After an excellent show, we returned to the hotel for the night, ending the second perfect day. Yes, I said perfect in spite of the rain. Saturday brought on a different story. Instead of rain we were welcomed by a very heavy dew. After an early rising and breakfast, we were off again. The beautiful Arlington Cemetery, where we found the grave of the Unknown Soldier and the amphitheater, was one of the high spots. Incidentally we saw the change of guard at the Unknown Soldier's tomb. This happens once every two hours. We also visited the White House, Monastery, and Zoological Gardens. Having packed, we started back for home. As we left, the sun gave us a great send off by com- ing out of its temporary hibernation. We used the same route home, stopping at Baltimore for dinner again. As we pulled up in front of Hamilton High, we were greeted by the tooting of automobile horns announcing our arrival. The most wonderful trip was now over but the memory of it will last forever. -Arthur Cooper 4, 1 E 5 6 EL A . 755 ' ' ' 132 ' , Tv? SIL 1 , 3'1 ' A w f, 7,3 , x R , f' ' , ,xr a -, Y 3X . Hamilton High School enjoyed another successful basketball season under the excellent tutelage of Mr. Scott Mosovich. Much credit must also be given to Captain joseph Bacskay for his superb guidance in leading the team. Hamilton was defeated by both of our intra-city rivals, Trenton and Immaculate, but only after hard hghts. Hamilton showed it true form in the Trenton game when we were only defeated 23-21. This year Hamilton was invited to the state toumament, and in the hrst game defeated a highly touted Bound Brook array, last year champions, 18-17. In the second game, we were defeated by Long Branch 18-8 and thus eliminated from further play. Bartlett, has had a very successful year. It has fulfilled its main objective of creating an interest in track and field activities by attracting more boys than the club could hold. The Interclass Indoor Track Meet, held each year to stimulate interest in track and field activities, was sponsored by the Track Club. The Sophomores, with a powerful team, upset the mighty Seniors for the lirst time in four years. The Sophomores won with a total of thirty-hve pointsg the juniors ran a close second with -thirty-four pointsg the Seniors came along with thirty points: and the Freshmen had only sixteen. Later in the year the Outdoor Meet was held. On Wednesday activities period the Track Club held its meetings and spent much of its time practicing in the gym preparing for the track meets. Intramural sports often develop Varsity or junior Varsity material. Intramural Sports are divided into three divisions: soccer, basketball, and baseball. Soccer laurels were won 'by Senior Homeroom, 211. Basketball, as usual, had every homeroom represented. With homerooms broken up this year the basketball fight was close. The final struggle found the Senior champs, Room 220, clashing with the junior champs, Room 302. The winner of the intramural always plays the Faculty, providing a lot of fun and laughs. Also in the organ- ization is one representative from each homeroom and a faculty adviser, appointed by the principal. All of these members may serve a full year. The Council has the power to make and to help enforce laws concerning the general student affairs referred to them for consideration. They can also determine, through homeroom meetings, students' feelings about any school questions. Outstanding committees are the Building and Grounds Committee, the Assembly Committee, the Cafeteria Committee, the Social Committee, and the Elections Committee. The chairmen of these committees are appointed by the president with the approval of the rest of the Council, Each chairman chooses his own committee from the other members of the group. No student is eligible for membership in the Student Council who has not done passing work in at least three regular subjects in the preceding term. Candidates for Student Council offices should have at least an average of a C rating. This year the council has tried to solve the question of auditorium programs by having professional speakers. The Council resumed the tinfoil drive. The money from this is used to provide necessities for needy children. Also a number of dances have been sponsored by the Council to increase the Activities Fund. The publication of the year book has become a class project rather than the activity of a few. ' The class assumed responsibility for the club write ups, individual write ups, and compo- sition of the book. One part of the class collected data while the commercial students typed the material. The class as a whole made various decisions concerning the form of the book and arrangement of subject matter. The group attempted to make a book that would be a reminder of their pleasant days at Hamilton. Although the work at times was difficult, it was enjoyable and practical. As this work placed definite responsibility upon each member of the class, it was beneficial and advantageous. Working in co-operation with the RETROSPICE Class was the RETROSPICE Business Staff, di- rected by Mr. Lewis Rader. This group took care of the costs, subscriptions, and advertisements. They also made arrangements for the taking of the individual and the group pictures. The members of this group also derived much pleasure and practical experience from their labors. The club conducted two annual events, the Father and Son Banquet and the Hi-Y Skating Party. We were privileged to hear a famous banquet speaker, Major Augustus Post, world traveler, lecturer and authority on the science of aeronautics. The purpose of the Patrol is to maintain order in the corridors and on the school grounds during lunch and activities periods. Members of the Patrol are posted to cover the entire grounds and school. In addition to maintaining order, the Patrol has been of great assistance in directing newcomers and persons visiting the school. Q. As a reward for their work, members of the Patrol enjoyed a trip to Philadelphia where they watched a football game between the Little Army and Navy teams. During the baseball season the Patrol again journeyed to Philadelphia to attend a big league game. The club meetings are held as a regular class period during which its members receive valuable instructions in the use of the dictionary, encyclopedia, and other reference books. The club consists of approximately twenty-four members. Each member checks books, tiles cards, shelves books, records circulation, and sees that the library is kept in order. It also assists fellow students in finding reference material. Student librarians are on duty every period during the day. At the end of the marking period each member receives a grade for her work and credit toward her high school diploma. This year the library presented each student with a borrowers card, so that he could keep account of the books he read, and avoid all misunderstanding which may arise in connection with over-due books. This system has proved eitective for both the student and the library. , The Library Club observed Book Week this year by making posters, and displaying on the bulletin board book jackets of the most popular books. The bulletin board is a means of keeping students posted on new books and books of great importance. The Library Club olfers an opportunity to those interested in books in general to further their enjoyment, as well as a practical background to those who are considering library work as a vocation. 0 First Row: Mary Sabat, Betty Seiger, Betty Tindall, Z 4 u John Fallon, president: Mr. Ralph Jones adviser: Ruth Sandhoff, Virginia Sennt, Mary Henry. Any typing or secretarial work that is needed by the teachers is done by the members. This teaches them the importance of honesty and trustworthiness. The pupil is given a chance to become familiar with the various types of machines as well as a knowledge from practical experience in different types of work. The popularity of the club always brings forth many candi- dates. Current plays and motion pictures are discussed by the members. During the club period, members develop poise, voice, and power of character portrayal by reading parts. This method gives pupils a better understanding and knowledge of many phases of the drama. In accordance with tradition, the club presented the annual senior play, The Family Up- riairr. The play was a dramatic success both from the production angle and from the linancial standpoint. A play for class night and a farewell assembly program were also staged. The management, advertising, and financial arrangements were carried on by appointed members of the club. The club proved enjoyable for those interested in the theater as a medium of enter- tainment, and helpful to those concerned with the staging and managing of productions. To bring the activities of the year to a fitting close, the club sponsored a trip to New York. They invited the junior Dramatic Club to join them. The outstanding event of the trip was attending one of the season's most successful plays.
